    1. [PIERCE-L & Variants ] Census Age Ranges

    3. >When you look at the age groups for the old census sheets (prior to >1850), you will see age groups like 10-15, 15-20, 20-30 etc. >Where would a person that was 15 or 20 be listed??? The precise column headings as they appeared on the 1840 census forms were: Under 5 5 & under 10 10 & under 15 15 & under 20 20 & under 20 30 & under 40 etc. For this reason, I do not label my transcriptions as 00-05, 05-10, 10-15, etc. Rather, I label them as 00-04, 05-09, 10-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, etc. Having said that, self reported census ages are always to be taken with a grain of salt, and the ones from before 1850 seem to me to have even more variation than the ones 1850 and after. A similar scheme was used in all early censuses, although if you go back far enough there become fewer ranges. For example, in 1790 (if you are lucky enough to be researching a county were the 1790 census is still extant), the column headings were free white males of 16 years & upwards, free white males under 16 years, free white females, all other free persons, slaves.
