As a new member to this list, I have a basic question that puzzles me. What is the difference between the two names - PIERCE and PEIRCE other than their spelling? Are they pronounced differently? Does it mean they originated from different countries? Did anyone really consistantly spell their name the same way in the 1700/1800's? I know my Breese ancestors had a variety of ways of spelling such a simple name - at least 14 at last count; even the Stephens have more than the obvious two ways to spell that name; and I hope none of you have to deal with the name Haynes in all its variations;). My ancestor is listed as Jonathon PEIRCE, and his daughter is listed as Rachell PIERCE. I have joined a second list - the PEIRCE list - because of the difference in spelling, but I wonder why the two lists don't combine? Would that be committing a sin? A curious mind just wants to know!! ;) Judy Martin <commjet@aol.com>
