Cyrus, west newton, april 5 age 70. he was the youngest of 12 children - five sons and seven daughters - of isaac and hannah (mason) pierce, and the 7th generation in descent from john pierce, an early settler of watertown, mass. through anthony, danie, joseph, isaac, and issac, above-named. (see bond's watertown, pp. 393,-99.) cyrus was b. in waltham, mass., august 15, 1790p; grad. h. c. 1810; during his sophomore year, in the winter of 1807 - 8, he began his labors as a school teacher in the village of west newton, in the same town, and not far from the very spot where he closed his life upwards of fifty-three years afterwards. immediately after leaving college, he accepted an invitation to take charge of a private school in nantucket. here he taught two years; in 1812, he returned to cambridge to pursue his theological studies. after three years he returned to nantucket, and resumed his work of a teacher, where he remained three years. during his residence there he m. harriet coffin, of that town. he left no children. in 1818, mr. pierce commenced preaching; was ord. in north reading, may 19, 1819; here he remained eight years; resigned his pastoral charge may 19, 1827, and returned to school-keeping; took charge of a school in north andover; returned to nantucket in 1831, where he taught a private school, which he relinquished in 1837, when he became the principal of the nantucket high school. this school he kept two years. in 1839, when the first normal school on this continent was established at lexington, he was induced to take cahrge of it, and entered upon his labors, july 3, 1839. he began with only three pupils, but the experiment was successful; at the expiration of the first three years there were forty-two scholars, when he resigned, in consequence of ill health, and returned to nantucket. he resumed his charge in 1844, the school having been removed to west newton. in 1849, he was again compelled to resign on account of his health; was a delegate to the peace congress, held in paris; travelled in england and on the continent; soon after his return, in 1850, he associated with mr. nathaniel t. allen, in the management of an academy in west newton, until his health again compelled him to retire, although he nominally remained an associate until his death. he passed away calmly and serenely with the respect and love of all who knew him. pierce, rev. willard, north abington, april 26, age 70. he settled first in foxborough, where he remained about twenty years. he was re-settled at north abington, where he sustained the pastoral relation ten years, and then, on account of ill health, resigned his office. the next obituary is william pope of dorchester. i notice he married sarah pierce, june 16, 1799. she was the younger sister of the late rev. dr. pierce, of brookline, and an elder sister of molly, above mentioned; was b. dec. 17, 1744, had 11 children, five of whom, with their mother, are living. margaret pope, a child by his second wife, married mr. pierce of dorchester. ralph pope, another child by his second wife margaret, had a grandson ( i think, lol) named frederick b. at stoughton may 15, 1772) married molly, daughte rof john and sarah (blake) pierce of dorchester april 13, 1796. Indian Deed of Springfield v. 15 pg. 140 province of new hampshire, in the house of representatives d. pierce, clk. signed a vote that there be allowed one hundred and two pounds one shilling in full of this muster roll for provisions, wages, &c., to be pd out of the money in the publick treasury for ye defense of the government. dated may 20th 1746. vol 22 page 200 Deaths Hoyt, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth, wife of david w. hoyt, of providence, r. i. died in brighton, mass., oct. 2, 1867, age 33. she was the daughter of jonathan mason and frances (stetson) pierce of brighton, and was born in roxbury, mass., july 21, 1834. her paternal grand-parents and their ancestors, in a direct line, were daniel and lydia (humphreys) pierce, ebenezer and sally (woodbury) pierce, john and elizabeth (fessenden) pierce, john and abigail (thompson) pierce, thomas and mary (proctor) pierce, robert and ann (greenway) pierce. the list of her ancestors embraces the names of baker, cheney, clap, clarke, collamore, dickerman, elliot, fessenden, greenway, greenwood, holmes, humphreys, leadbetter, leeds, locke, osborn, paine, payson, pierce, pray, proctor, shepard, smith, stetson, swift, thompson, tulman, woodbury, and others, of dorchester, roxbury, stoughton, charlestwon, and other towns in eastern massachusetts. she shared the genealogical labors of her husband, and was very anxious to perfect the record of her own ancestors. mrs. hoyt was the oldest of a family of five children, all of whom are now dead. she left but one child, albert pierce hoyt, now ten years old. though her life seems all too brief for her mourning family and friends, yet while she lived she exerted a strong influence over a wide circle of acquaintances, and her life-work was well done. notices of her life and character have appeared in the christian era, of nov. 14 and the watchman and reflector, of nov. 21. vol 22 page 429-430 the Peirce Family sarah peirce (no. 87), dau. of shadrach peirce (no. 29) and wife abigail hoskins, while the widow of george peirce (no. 54) had an illegitimate son: (322) edmund, b. oct. 16, 1776; m. dec., 1799, wealthy howland, of freetown. he was a carpenter, and died nov. 26, 1823. she died jan. 14, 1858. edmund and mother were temporarily insane. levi pierce (no. 88), son of shadrach (no. 29) and wife abigail, was b. feb. 26, 1739, and m. feb. 11, 1761, bathsheba babbett, of middleborough. perhaps she was b. in that part of old taunton now berkley. levi served a brief period in a company of the local militia of middleborough that were sent to reinforce fort william henry, in 1757, but the danger was over before they had proceeded far, and so they returned. (see Rolls on file in the office of secretary of state, boston.) from april 26 to dec. 16, 1759, levi peirce served as a private soldier in an expedition to crown point, his wages amounting to 15 pounds 2 shillings and 2 pence. he received of the commissary 9 shillings and 4 pence, and of his captain 1 shilling, leaving due him on settlement, 14 pounds 11 shillings and 10 pence.
