    1. [PIERCE-L] PIERCE/PEIRCE - What's the difference?
    2. As a new member to this list, I have a basic question that puzzles me. What is the difference between the two names - PIERCE and PEIRCE other than their spelling? Are they pronounced differently? Does it mean they originated from different countries? Did anyone really consistantly spell their name the same way in the 1700/1800's? I know my Breese ancestors had a variety of ways of spelling such a simple name - at least 14 at last count; even the Stephens have more than the obvious two ways to spell that name; and I hope none of you have to deal with the name Haynes in all its variations;). My ancestor is listed as Jonathon PEIRCE, and his daughter is listed as Rachell PIERCE. I have joined a second list - the PEIRCE list - because of the difference in spelling, but I wonder why the two lists don't combine? Would that be committing a sin? A curious mind just wants to know!! ;) Judy Martin <commjet@aol.com>

    3. In reference to Judy's question about spelling (of names) in the 1700s. I believe this quote is attributed to former President Thomas Jefferson: "It's a d--m poor mind that can think of only one way to spell a word." 1. [PIERCE-L] Irish PIERCE - Chicago, St. Louis
    2. Gerald Pierce
    3. According to family verbal history, two of my gg grandfather's brothers, named Mort (Morris) and Jack (John), moved to St.Louis to seek their fortunes, and have not been heard of again. I'd be interested to know if anyone in St. Louis is researching PIERCE in that area. They would have arrived there in the early 1900s, as they were both in Chicago for the 1900 census. 1. [PIERCE-L] PIERCE, PEIRCE, MOTT, BUCK, GILL - 1700's CT, RI, NY
    2. Dear List Readers, I just signed on to your list yesterday. Last night I searched the List Archives to determine if the following people had been discussed previous to this posting and I did not find them - though maybe my poor old eyes overlooked them somehow.*grin* Rachel PEIRCE (PIERCE) m. in May 1756 in New Milford, CT to Abel MOTT b. Feb 1736 in Wallingford, CT. Rachel is a daughter of Jonathan PIERCE (PEIRCE) and Rachell BUCK. Abel and Rachel MOTT are living in Canaan Town, Columbia Co., NY on the 1790 Federal census. The parents of Abel MOTT are Samuel MOTT b. 1708 in Kinsgton, RI m. Aug 1735 to Sarah GILL. Do any of you have these folks on your data bases? I am wanting to know where and how I can verify the above information as true and I would love to learn more about each family. Most of the data listed above came from MOTT family charts and other data without source citations. Any hints, clues, or other help would be greatly appreciated. 3. Hi: I'm new to Pierce (and variants) as well as 16th Century genealogy and have immediately found questions in Colonial Massachusetts / England. I was wondering if anyone could express an opinion. I have come across three slightly different publications on the ancestors of the initial immigrants, Thomas Pierce and his family, and wonder if there is a consensus on which is more correct. I do not wish to challenge any of these - I'd just like to get a feel for them before I delve into it more deeply. F Mary Pierce 1656-1690 m John Lynds Samuel 1617-1705/06 m Mary ? 2. James E Pearce
    3. Warren: Thanks for the information on John Pearce (Mason). I am still trying to find out where he came from and how he connects with the other Pearce families in early Rhode Island. Have you read the two volumn set on "Rhode Island General Court of Trials (1671- 1704). The early records were transcribed by Jane Fletcher Fiske. The two volumn set was published in 1998. There are records of trials in early Newport County, Rhode Island. In the books there are several references to John Pearce (Mason) and other members of the Pearce family. Best Regards, Jim Pearce Nuevo, Calif.
