    3. I hate it when I have to reply to my own messages to correct an error. But, I wrote: >I don't know if the following is a Pierce story or a Cox story or a >Nichols story or a Reneau story, but it's one of my family stories. >I guess we can call it a Pierce story since the George Cox of whom I >am going to speak was the grandson of Nancy Ann Pierce. If you followed the narrative, you can clearly see that George Cox was the son of Nancy Ann Pierce, not the grandson. If we want to speak of grandsons, we have to say that George Cox was the grandson of James E. Pierce. Also, it wasn't really an error, but I neglected to say that my James Pierce's middle initial was "E". So in this note, I (correctly) refer to him as James E. Pierce. 1. [PIERCE-L] James Pierce, Greene County, TN
    2. Jerry Bryan
    3. I'm an old subscriber. This is a response to "old subscribers please post". My closest Pierce ancestor was my gg grandmother Nancy Ann Pierce of Greene County, Tennessee. She was b. 15 Jan 1839 in Tennessee, d. 22 Jul 1880 in Greene County, Tennessee, bu. Antioch Cemetery, Greene County, Tennessee. She m. my gg grandfather John Tivis Cox 23 Sep 1860 in Greene County, Tennessee. Nancy Ann Pierce was the daughter of James Pierce, and James Pierce is my brick wall. He was b. about 1804 and d. after 1860. With the help of a fellow Pierce researcher, I have recently come across some additional information about him. (Check out http://painter.vou.org/HmbyrptPrc.htm ) I already knew that James Pierce was married three times, and that his third wife was Experience (Spriddy) Wells. And I knew that my Nancy Ann Pierce was the daughter of either his first or second wife, probably his first. I now see that there is circumstantial evidence (still seeking proof) that his first wife was Anny Green, that his second wife was Mary (Polly) Doty, and that my Nancy Ann Pierce was the daughter of Anny Green. I have no information on Anny Green's parents. There is circumstantial evidence (still seeking proof) that Mary (Polly) Doty was the daughter of Ephraim Doty and Sarah (Sally) Cooper. I have no information on Experience (Spriddy) Wells' parents. In the censuses in which he appears (and which I have been able to find), James Pierce is reported as having been born in Tennessee. In the 1880 censuses in which his children appear (and which I have been able to find), their father is reported as having been born in Tennessee. Nevertheless, there is a tradition that James Pierce was born in England. I am seeking the parents and birth place for James Pierce. Any help would be appreciated, especially on the tradition that he was born in England. I don't know if the following is a Pierce story or a Cox story or a Nichols story or a Reneau story, but it's one of my family stories. I guess we can call it a Pierce story since the George Cox of whom I am going to speak was the grandson of Nancy Ann Pierce. After Nancy Ann Pierce died, John Tivis Cox married Martha P. Reneau. At the time, Martha P. Reneau was divorced from her first husband John H. Nichols. Also at the time, John Tivis Cox had a son George Jackson Cox who was 21 years old, and Martha P. Reneau had a daughter Clarissa Loretta (Rett) Nichols who was 11 years old. So George Cox and Rett Nichols were step-brother and step-sister. A year later, when George was 22 and Rett was 12, they were married. They had a long and happy marriage, and they were my father's Grandpa and Grandma Cox. 2. Brenda Pierce
    3. The First United Methodist Church is an outgrowth of the first Methodist church congregation in Georgia. Grant's Meeting House, built in 1787, five miles southeast of Washington just off the old Wrightsboro Road, was the home of this first Methodist family. A part of that original membership formed the nucleus of the Washington church. Bishop Francis Asbury's official visits to Wilkes County began in 1788. He held a General Conference in 1783 in the log cabin which was Washington's first courthouse. In 1821 the site of the present Masonic building (on East Liberty Street) was purchased for the purposed of constructing a church building. In 1824, during the pastorate of Rev. Lovick Pierce, a larger wooden church structure with a porch extending across its front was erected there. During an annual conference held in this building in 1834 the first movement to build Emory College was started. In 1842 the congregation had been strengthened in membershipo and spirit by some very effective revivals to the point that it was strong enough to be classified as a station church and was no longer on a circuit. During the 1850s and 1860s it continued its ministry under existing difficulties with about 150 members. In 1871 a Sunday School was organized and in 1878 the Woman's Missionary Society was begun. In 1882 the brick church on East Liberty Street, (presently the Masonic building), was built and dedicated by Bishop Pierce. The congreagation was host there to the North Georgia Conference in 1890, and the building was used by the Methodists as their church home until 1910 when the occupied their present church structure a short distance away at 102 West Liberty. The old wooden building had become Floy's Opera House when it was moved a short distance from its original site. Now the brick building on the same site is regularly occupied by men of the Masonic Order as it is owned by them. The cornerstone of the present church building on the northeast corner reads as follows: First Methodist Church Organized A.D. 1819 Rebuilt A.D. 1907 Building Committee: B. S. Irvin, T. C. Hogue, J.W. Lowe F. H. Ficklen, M. A. Pharr, R. Motte Smith, K. A. Wilheit, I. T. Irvin Jr., Rev. H. J. Ellis, Pastor The new building was dedicated by Bishop Morrison when it was finished. A stained glass window in memoriam to Samuel H. Barnett, Marcus Aurelius Pharr, and Jerome A. Wooten was placed in the sanctuary above the choir loft. The existing East and West windows were given in memory of the Thomas C. Hogue family and Mr. and Mrs. Marcus A. Pharr Sr. Location 100 W. Now the fun really begins ... wonder what wonderful stuff that will show us? Hopefully something we need to know. Thought for awhile he was a mirage or something, but I have to tell you he was alive .... 1864-1921 Brenda

    1. [PIERCE-L] New subscribers - Post Your Lines - Change Subject Lines, etc.
    2. Brenda Pierce
    3. Good Morning to all of you -- - We have had many new subscribers the past two weeks, so many of you may want to repost your lines. I am subbed to several lists and the most consistent thing I see is people sending in a message saying "I am looking for Joe Pierce born 1889 - wife Jana" - with no states, other time tables, dates, etc. Remember to find off shoot lines you need to be specific list as much information as you can on the specific person you are researching - and remember to change the Subject Line - that can be the difference in finding a match and getting no responses - if someone doesn't read it - or doesn't even get a clue that the person may be in the "area/town/county/state" that they are researching, they may just pass right on over your message, I know I do. So carefully worded queries are the key to good results. Good luck and I hope all your brickwalls fall down. Brenda
