    1. [PIERCE-L & Variants ] Interesting Pearce Question
    2. Warren Pearce
    3. Hi As we all know there is some information saying that my James' brother, John, lived in N.C. for a short time and moved back to the R.I. area. There is data that a "John Pearce" married Polly McBride in N.C. I'm finding interesting conflicts and data gaps. The 1888 Pearce Genealogy book by Frederick Pierce, page 81, entry 68 states: 68. JOHN5 PEARCE (Samuel4, James3, George2, Richard1). b. Feb. 15, 1768; m. Nov. 27, 1785, Patience Arnold; m. 2nd, Dec. 17, 1794, Mary Luther, b. 1769, d. June 7, 1809; m. 3rd, 1809, Annie (???). John Pearce resided in Warren, R. I., with the exception of two years he was with his brother James in North Carolina, while a young man. Like his father he was a master builder. He erected not only fine residences but elegant churches in his home town and across the line in the old Bay State. He served his townspeople in offices of usefulness and trust and was by all regarded as an upright man and citizen. He d. Mar. 2, 1848. Ch.-- Seven Pierce Families, page 230, item number 339 says that John moved to N.C. The Wildbores in America, page 72, item E-570 includes John indicating that he married Patience Arnold. The Relationship Deed Book from Camden County, 1777 - 1821, has these entries mentioning John and Polly McBride/Pearce Book F, Pages 248, 288 & 289, 1794 has Polly Pearce as a daughter of Josiah McBride and Wife of John Pearce Book F, Page 246, 1794 has Polly Pearce, Wife of John Pearce Book G, Page 78, 1795 has Polly McBride as an heir to Josiah McBride and sold land to James Pearce Book L Page 117 1807 has Polly McBride as a daughter of Josiah McBride Book N, Page 55, 1795 has McBride/Polly as a Niece of McBride/Elisha Now, here is the fun. The 1888 book has John marrying these people in R.I.: Patience Arnold on Nov. 27, 1785; Mary Luther on Dec. 17, 1794 who died on June 7, 1809, and Annie in 1809. The N.C. data documents a "Polly Pearce" as the wife of John Pearce in 1794. However, she appears to be identified as Polly McBride in 1795 and 1807. So she was still alive in 1807. I wonder why she is identified as Polly McBride, not Polly Pearce in 1795 and 1807. Could it be that John came to N.C. after Patience died and married Polly prior to 1794, divorced her in 1794, returned to R.I. to marry Mary Luther in December 1794 or could it be that we are dealing with 2 different John Pearces????????? Thoughts???????? WWP Linda & Warren Pearce Colorado Springs CO 80919-4821

    1. [PIERCE-L & Variants ] James Pierce and Elizabeth Cruraty, Greene County, Tennessee
    2. Jerry Bryan
    3. The recent thread on both COX-L and PIERCE-L about Claudius Cox of Greene County, Tennessee had a loose end that I wanted to clean up. As a quick review, Claudius was the son of Aaron Cox and Experience (Spriddy) Wells. Experience (Spriddy) Wells m.(1) Thomas Mitchell, m.(2) Aaron Cox, and m.(3) James E. Pierce. Claudius Cox was enumerated as Claudius Mitchell in the 1850 and 1860 censuses while living with his mother Experience (Spriddy) Wells and his step-father James E. Pierce, despite the fact that his father was Aaron Cox rather than Thomas Mitchell. He was enumerated as Claudius Cox in the 1870 and 1880 censuses while living as an adult with his wife. The loose end had to do with the 1870 Greene County, Tennessee census entry for James Pierce. James' wife was listed as Elizabeth in 1870 rather than as Experience. It is still an open question as to whether this was an enumerator's error (putting down Elizabeth when he should have put down Experience), or whether James E. Pierce married again between 1860 and 1870 to a woman whose given name was Elizabeth. I cited a Greene County marriage on 13 Aug 1865 between James Pierce and Elizabeth Cruraty as a possible clue to this puzzle. I still don't know if this James Pierce was James E. Pierce himself, James W. Pierce who was the son of James E. Pierce, or some other James Pierce. James E. Pierce and James W. Pierce are the only two James Pierces that I know of in Greene County, Tennessee in this time frame, so it seems likely that it was one or the other. This is still an open question. But the loose end that I wanted to address was the surname Cruraty. This surname for Elizabeth comes from the transcription of the Greene County marriage book on the LDS Web site (IGI Batch M519292). I thought Cruraty looked funny, and one of you sent me a private E-mail suggesting that it was probably really Crumley. I checked in the library in a book called Marriage Records, Greene County by Sandra Klucken. Sandra'a transcription has the marriage as James Pierce to Elizabeth Crumley. I also checked the microfilm for the actual marriage book. The handwriting is very sloppy, but it clearly appears to me as that it says James Pierce to Elizabeth Crumly. I tried very hard to see an -ley ending on the surname, but all I saw was an -ly ending. I have to say that I am very astounded and impressed that someone is a good enough transcriber to see Cruraty and to be able to figure out that the LDS transcriber mistook Crumley or Crumly for Cruraty. The bad news is that I checked the 1860 Greene County census looking for Elizabeth Crumly and Elizabeth Crumley. There were several there, but none of them really jumped out at me as an obvious candidate to be the one who married James Pierce. Of course, I still don't know which James Pierce married Elizabeth Crumly in 1865. If it was James E. Pierce, then I know Elizabeth's approximate birth date from the 1870 census entry for James E. Pierce. If it was James W. Pierce, then I really know nothing about Elizabeth's age because I cannot find an 1870 census entry for James W. Pierce. I think there are (at least) two possibilities. One possibility is that "Experience" was written down as "Elizabeth". The age is about right. The other possibility is that James E. Pierce married for a fourth time. There is a Greene County marriage, James Peerce to Elizabeth Cruraty, 13 Aug 1865. Given that Daniel Pierce was born about 1863, that suggests that Experience (Spriddy) Wells, third wife of James Pierce and the mother of Claudius Cox, might have died 1863/1865. Of course, I cannot prove that this James Peerce was my James E. Pierce who married first Anny Green, married second Mary Doty, and married third Experience Wells. 1. [PIERCE-L & Variants ] More on Claudius Cox, Greene County, Tennessee
    2. Jerry Bryan
    3. I previusly reported the 1850 census entry which included Claudius Cox. He was enumerated with his mother Experience Wells and his stepfather James Pierce. His name was listed as Claudius Mitchell, his mother having married first Thomas Mitchell and having married second Aaron Cox. Having further reviewed the data, I think the evidence is extremely strong that Claudius was the son of Aaron Cox rather than being the son of Thomas Mitchell. I have now found the 1860 Greene County, Tennessee census entry for the family. Claudius' name was still listed as Claudius Mitchell, except that it was now Claudius C. Mitchell. His marriage record gives his middle initial as "M", so I wonder if the 1860 census entry was for "Claudius Cox Mitchell". Notice that my Nancy Ann Pierce was the stepbrother of Aaron Cox, and that Aaron Cox was the first cousin of Nancy Ann Pierce's husband John Tivis Cox. Notice that he is now using Cox as his surname. I haven't yet found the 1870 census entry for Claudius. I wonder if he was Claudius Mitchell or Claudius Cox in 1870. 1880, Dist. 7, Greene County, Tennessee, p. 115c Cox Claudius 34 m m w head farmer TN TN TN Martha 33 f m w IN TN IN Mary E. 9 f s w TN TN IN Sabina J. 7 f s w TN TN IN Louisa M. 5 f s w TN TN IN John S. 1 m s w TN TN IN The marriage record is C.M. Cox to Martha Margaret Carter, 18 Jul 1867, Greene County, Tennessee. Martha Margaret Carter was the daughter of Jacob Carter and Pollie Guffie. Except for not yet finding the 1870 census record for Claudius, I think I have found all the "easy" data on Claudius and his father Aaron Cox. Given that there was a list of Mitchell children anyway, I can accept that the listing of Claudius as a Mitchell in the 1850 and 1860 censuses might have been an enumerator's mistake. But given that Claudius' mother Experience was married in 1850 under the name Mitchell rather than under the name Cox, I think there must have been something funny about the 1845 marriage of Experience Wells and Aaron Cox. It might be "hard" data to find, but there might be a Greene County court record, possibly a divorce or annulment, which could shed some light on this question. 3. I normally don't post the same message to more than one list, but this little mystery practically begs to be posted both to Cox researchers and to Pierce researchers. The mystery will take a little bit of narrative to describe. John Tivis Cox married Nancy Ann Pierce 23 Sep 1860 in Greene County, Tennessee. They were my gg grandparents. On the Pierce side of this particular mystery, Nancy Ann Pierce was the daughter of James E. Pierce and Anny Green. James E. Pierce and Anny Green were married 1 Dec 1825 in Greene County, and Anny Green died 1840/1844. James E. Pierce married (2) Mary (Polly) Doty 25 Aug 1845 in Greene County, and Mary (Polly) Doty died before 1850. James E. Pierce married (3) Experience (Spriddy) Wells 19 Mar 1850 in Greene County. In the 1850 Greene County, Tennessee census, my Nancy Ann Pierce was 10 years old and Experience (Spriddy) Wells was her stepmother. At the time she married James E. Pierce, Experience (Spriddy) Wells was the widow of Thomas Mitchell, and her 1850 marriage to James E. Pierce was listed as James Pierce to Spitty Michel. On the Cox side of this particular mystery, John Tivis Cox was the son of Riley Cox and the grandson of Reuben Cox. Reuben Cox had a son named Horton Cox, Horton of course being the brother of my Riley Cox. I just ran into a Greene County, Tennessee marriage that is the source of my little mystery. The marriage is Aaron Cox to Experience Mitchell, 25 Jul 1845, with Horton Cox as bondsman. The mystery is now set up. Let's start out with the question of who was Aaron Cox? I don't have him in my data base, but his marriage record suggests that he was a brother of Horton Cox and hence a son of Reuben Cox. Indeed, I have found several GEDCOM's in the Internet that list him that way. But I have seen no evidence of his existence other than his 1845 marriage. But more to the point of this mystery, was the Experience Mitchell whom he married the same Experience (Spriddy) Wells, widow of Thomas Mitchell, who married James E. Pierce in 1850? If so, you would think that the 1850 marriage would have been listed as James Pierce to Experience Cox. And yet, the same GEDCOM's on the Internet that list Aaron Cox as the son of Reuben Cox, also list Aaron's wife as Experience Wells, and the GEDCOM's even show a child from the union, a Claudius Cox born about 1846. So who was Aaron Cox, and did he really marry the same Experience Wells that married James E. Pierce in 1850, and did Aaron Cox and Experience Wells really have a son named Claudius? Note that there is a Claudius Mitchell age 4 in the 1850 Greene County census, enumerated with James Peirce (sic) and his wife Spriddy. Actually, there were three Mitchell children enumerated with the family in 1850 -- Andrew Y. age 10, Lorinda J. age 8, and Claudius age 4. I had always assumed that all three were children of Thomas Mitchell and Experience (Spriddy) Wells, and that Thomas Mitchell died 1846/1850. But the truth is, I don't really know when Thomas Mitchell died, and the 1845 marriage of Aaron Cox to Experience Mitchell certainly suggests that Claudius was Aaron Cox's son. If Claudius was indeed Aaron Cox's son, then the 1845 marriage of Aaron Cox to Experience Mitchell indicates that Claudius was legitimate and that there would have been no reason for Claudius not to have used the Cox name, and no reason for Experience not to have been listed as Experience Cox when she married James Pierce in 1850. Any help on this matter gratefully accepted. Jerry Bryan _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com

    3. Hi All, Some time ago, I ran across the Alden Society at http://www.alden.org. Joining the group requires a documented lineage back to the Alden family. Part of what got my attention is that the society offers a scholarship to children of its members and, since my daughter is about to be off to college, joining made sense. I have sufficient data between John Alden and my James Pearce, the son of Samuel and Betty Simmons. Its Betty's parents that have the trace to the Alden and Richard Warren lines. My JAMES PEARCE was born in Little Compton or Warren, Rhode Island on 10 December 1765. He was in South Mills, Camden County, N.C. by 1790 and married SARAH McBRIDE. They had at least these six children: Poly b 1796, John b. 1800 - d. 1875, Ira b 1805 - d 1876, Samuel b. 1812 - d 1876, Jeremiah Simmons b. 1817 - d. 1869, and Elisha. My problem is good of "Proof data" on James and his children. I have enough data on my Samuel based on the Tennessee census data and so forth. The issue is James in N.C. Thoughts??? 3. I noticed that you do not have all the children for David and Mary Pierce. You will find them in the Vital Records of Swansea, Mass to 1850. Transcribed by H. L. Hannah Peirce the daughter of David Peirce and of Mary was born January the 1 day 1730 pg 79 David the son of David Peirce and of Mary was born January the 14 day 1723 page 97 Elizabeth Peirce the Daughter of David Peirce and of Mary his wife was bornJanuary the 2 1734 pg 68 Jonathan the son of David Peirce and of May his wife was born April the 4th day 1725 Mary Peirce the Daughter of David Peirce and of Mary his wife was Born february the 22 1727 There is a lot of Peirce information in this book, check it out. I do not find your Samuel in this book, the only one I find is on Page 20 Samuel the son of Ezriakim Peirce and Sarah his Wife was borne december 17 1700 Where did you find your Samuel? it might help in finding who was Mary wife of David. I found Anna/Nancy in "Thomas Horton of Milton and Rehoboth Massachusetts" by Margaret R. Jenks and Frank C. Seymour Page 75 Anna/Nancy Peirce is the daughter of David Perc/Peirce does not give his wifes name but does say he is from Rehoboth so I can only at this point assume it is Mary.
