Warren, My understanding is that Pearce Hall was a large castle / estate. The Percy family seemed historically to be on the wrong side in political battles, so the idea to change the spelling of the name at that time probably had merit. In the early 1700's, my ancestor spelled the name Piercy, however his name is recorded as Pearce in the Northampton, MA record of his marriage in 1708 Also, I have read the need for caution in working with Frederick Pierce's data, as he was not always consistent in his effort to tie families into the Percy/Northumberland line which dates back to Denmark and Normandy. Basil R. Percy
I got a couple of note asking for where I got the Pearce Hall data. Here are some sources: The Pearce Genealogy book by Col. Frederick C. Pierce published in 1888 has this data on page 36: From the foregoing historical sketch of the English branch of the Percies it will be seen that Peter17 Percy(*) was son of Ralph16 Percy; he (Peter17) was born in 1447 and his descent is as follows from the first ancestor: Galfred1, William2, Alan3, William4, William5, Agnes6, Henry7, William8, Henry9, Henry10, Henry11, Henry12, Henry13, Henry14, Henry15, Ralph16. Peter17 Percy had a son Richard18. The father was standard barer to Richard the Third at the battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. Richard18 founded Pearce Hall in York, England, where he lived and died leaving an eldest son Richard19, Jr. Richard19, Jr. resided on the homestead of his father and had two sons Richard20, Jr., b. 1590, and William20. It was at this time that the spelling of the name in this branch was changed from Percy to Pearce. Thirty-one Generations, A Thousand Years of Percies and Pierces 972 to 1948 has the same data. The Pearces, Persons of Quality, by Jane Pearce has: The Percy family was taking no bows for a final curtain call, however. They were getting ready to change scenes. Peter Percy born in 1447 to Ralph1, was standard bearer to Richard the Third at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. Richard, Peter's son, founded Pearce Hall in York, England, where he lived and died leaving an eldest son, Richard Jr. Richard Jr., like many others of the Percy family, had watched with growing alarm as the titled Percies became more and more enmeshed in the intrigue and danger of English politics. Percy an honorable, name, was no longer safe to wear. Richard decided to change the spelling to Pearce. The final e would sound like the y, but the pronunciation would be slightly different. He summoned his sons William and Richard from Bristol. Pearce, Bartlett, Matthews, Smart, and Allied Families, by James Alonzo Matthews, 21. RICHARD PEARCE was the founder of PEARCE HALL at York, England, where he lived and died. He was the first to change the name to PEARCE, which name and way of spelling continued to within the last three quarters of a century. Since then some members of the family changed the name and used the form PIERCE. WWP Linda & Warren Pearce Colorado Springs CO 80919-4821
In our history that I have read, in 1500 Richard Percy changed his name to Richard Pearce and founded Pearce Hall. What does "Pearce Hall" represent? WWP Linda & Warren Pearce Colorado Springs CO 80919-4821
Hi, In my wanderings at the Renaissance Fair over the years, I have picked up 5 different Pearce (England, Wales, and Ireland) and one Percy Coat of Arms. Any thoughts on the relevance of these and their application to various Pearce groups???? The Percy one has a yellow shield with alternating Red and White blocks around the outside of the shield with a side silhouette view of a lion standing on his hind legs in the center. On top of the shield is the traditional Knight's helmet with the same lion figure on top of it The England Pearce coat of arms has a white shield with a side view of a lion on its hind legs looking toward you. There are 3 silhouettes of a bug in the top of the shield. On top of the shield is the traditional Knight's helmet with the same lion figure on top of it. The Wales Pearce coat of arms has a black shield with a "Mural Crown between two lions passant" in the center, 2 lions standing on 3 feet on the top and 2 cross like figures on the bottom. On top of the shield is the traditional Knight's helmet with the same crown and cross figure on top of it. The Ireland Pearce Coat of arms is the one on our web page. The shield has the heads of 3 dog like animals on it. On top of the shield is the traditional Knight's helmet with a bird on top of it A copy I got from one of our associates uses Mac Piarais for the family name. Another one I have has only the picture of the shield. It has the heads of 3 unicorns with a chevron between them. The shield in this one is in 4 sections, 2 have 3 "heraldic roses, stalked and leaved" and the other 2 have 3 ravens. The knights helmet on top has a single raven sitting on it. There were a lot of Pearce folk in that area then. My Pearce arrived around 1630. Can you give a name - date to start with. Hi everyone: I would appreciate all Pierce searchers sending me information on your roots if they were from Massachusetts or/and Rhode Island prior to 1750. I have come to a brick wall in my search for my roots. I am sure that grandfather must have had roots in either England or Ireland and his parents must have immigrated either with him as a small child or before he was born. I have records of his marriage but nothing on him before that time. Thank you all for any and all help you are able to offer. Sincerely, Mary
each "family" had their own - these were not just for Pierce, Pearce, etc to incorporate a surname - it was based on individual family and their bravery patterns, lifestyles, etc. It is not a one fit all scenario although in some cases there were only one if the family was small - I believe it was "son of honor" that received these coas. I have an email somewhere that explained all this, I'll see if I can dig that up. Listers: I am trying to get information on my Gr Gr Gr Grandparents family roots. Gr GR Gr Grandfather Thomas Pierce married Almy Chase at the Trinity Church in Newport, Rhode Island on November 3, 1748. In contacting the church, they have verified that this couple was married there on this date. They were not able to supply the names of the parents to me for either grandfather nor grandmother. They did however, offer the information that since they were married in that church that he was likely of the Anglican faith. If anyone on this lists has any information available on my grandparents will you please kindly send it to me. Anything earlier than 1748 will be deeply appreciated. Thomas Pierce would have had to come from England or possibly Ireland. Almy Chase's parents may have come from England in the 1600 era. Thank you one and all. This has become a brick wall in my research and I really would like to find this information as soon as possible. Wishing you all the best of luck and success in your search for family roots. Hi Everyone, I heard a rumor stating "Anthony Pierce/Pearce was actually a Shipping Merchant. He and his brother Richard made frequent stops in the West Indies to pick up spices." Also, a will was apparently discovered in which Richard Pierce Senior (son of Thomas Pierce) willed land in the Barbados to his Two sons Richard and Anthony (Shipping Merchants). Both Anthony and Richard removed to Southern New Jersey in the early 1700s. As a direct descendant of Anthony Pierce/Pearce, I'd very much be interested in discovering if this information is correct, its source, and if there are any copies of documents available (especially that Pierce will). I would greatly appreciate any information anyone may be able to share on this! Thank you- Gail Peterson-Masengale

Hello Everybody! I am at a brickwall with my husband's great great grandfather's birthplace & parentage. Reuel A. PIERCE was b. abt. 1811 somewhere in Vermont. By abt. 1831 he was a squatter farmer in Fitzroy Twp., Carleton County (near Ottawa), Ontario, Canada. In 1836 he married Ontario born Margaret McLEOD. One of their children, Emmaline PIERCE, was mentioned in a book of local history with "U.E.L" beside her name. I do not know which of her parents was of Loyalist descent - Reuel or Margaret? Any help would be very welcome. Thanks! Mary Harris
Dear Carlyine Gibson Pierce, In the 1850 census it list your individual as Burrill Pearce, age 21, M , farmer born in Miss. wife Jane, age 20, F, Ga. If you follow the census back into the 1840, I would think the father would be William Pierce in 1840 and William Pearce in the 1850. Different census takers spelled names different. Burrill is found in Mississippi, Itawamba co. 7th district, Roll M432-373, Page 386. I hope this helps, Happy Hunting Tommy H Moss
