BlankHi List, I am looking for information on a Richard PIERCE born abour 1891, Liverpool, son of Anthony and Theresa PIERCE nee LYONS. Richard emigrated to the US in December 1914. His final destination was his Aunt Mrs M. LEE, of 306, 144th Street, New York. I believe he may have been working at the Presbeteryan Hospital in Manhatten around 1920. (from 1920 US Census). His next of kin was listed as Hannah JOY, 83 Victoria Road, Seacombe, Cheshire. Richard had previouslsy visited the US around 1897-1900 when he was in Boston. It is not known who he went with as in 1898 his Mother was in Seacombe where she had another child Lilian. It is not known where his father was at this time but as a Mariner he could have been at Sea. Richard had at least two children Dick Jnr and a younger child name not known but thought to be a girl. Does anyone have any knowledge of Richard or his family. I would be grateful for any information. Dear Pierce Researchers, I need help straightening out some confusion regarding my 5th Great Grandfather Joshua Pierce of Pembroke MA, who married Hopestill Hollway, Joshua born c1705, deceased 15 March 1794, and is buried in Cornwall Cemetery, Cornwall, Litchfield Co., CT, his gravestone engraved as follows: "Inscription: In Memory of Lieut Joshua Pierce who Died March 15th 1794 in the 89th year of his age" The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Patriot Index provides the following information: "PIERCE, Joshua Birth: MA 25 Jan 1705 Service: CT Rank: PS Death: CT 13 Mar 1794 Patriot Pensioned: No Widow Pensioned: No Children Pensioned: No Heirs Pensioned: No Spouse: (1) Hopestill Holloway PS - is patriotic service. He may have fed the army or given livestock. " Question: Could Joshua Pierce have been given the military rank of Lieutenant if his Rev. War service was a public service? Did he have milita ry service other than the "public service" as stated in the DAR index? How did Joshua come by the military rank of Lieutenant as engraved on his gravestone? Did he serve in some Train Band? His spouse, Hopestill, is also buried in Cornwall Cemetery and gravestone is engraved as follows: Hopestill Pierce wife of Lieut Joshua Pierce Departed this Life the 10th of April 1784 in the 81st year of her Age" Any clarification on Joshua's military ranking "Lieut" will be most appreciated. I believe that my ggrandfather, Cyrus Pierce, came from Chester Co., PA and was the son of Cyrus Pierce. I believe (but can't prove) that Cyrus (b 1-3-1812) was the son of Levi (b 12-4-1790) and Phebe (Stephen & Pebe White) Pierce; Sarah M. and Martha Ann were the other 2 documented siblings. I believe that Levi is the son of George (b 1767?) & Martha Pierce. This information is from Early Church Records of Chester County, PA. Is there any relationship between this Pierce family and that of "Isaac Peirce and Betsy Cloud Peirce, daughter of Abner Cloud. Isaac Peirce was born in Chester County, Pa., April 9, 1756, came to the District about the time of the revolution, and married Betsy Cloud in 1779... The children of Isaac and Betsy Peirce were Amy, born 1780; Job, born 1781, married Sarah Harvey; Anne, born 1783, married Samuel Simonton; Abner Cloud Peirce, born 1785, died 1851, and inherited the mill property; Hannah, born 1789, married Hayes Speakman, died 1875; Mary, born 1791; Betsy, 1793; Joshua, born 1795; married Susan Coats, daughter of Jacob Coats of Philadelphia." Thank you, Mary Gall
Hello, List! I wanted to give something back for help one of our Listers gave me, so here is a transcript from Rambler, 3/22/1925 which was sent to me by a librarian in the Virginia Room of the Fairfax City Regional Library in Fairfax, VA. It is part of an article which apparently was one of a series. My ancestor is Abner PIERCE, born 1792 in Massachusetts and died probably in 1862 in northern Virginia, but I had requested the article in case it referred to the one I was seeking. Perhaps my disappointment will be someone else's "happy dance." "In writing of Joshua Peirce's Linnean Hill nursery, the Rambler forgot to mention that for many years he was owner of the squares bounded by Thirteenth and Sixteenth, R and S streets, and had a tree plantation there. Joshua Peirce was the eighth child of Isaac Peirce and Betsy Cloud Peirce, daughter of Abner Cloud, who ran the mill whose ruins are on the flats about a mile this side of Chain Bridge. Isaac Peirce was born in Chester County, Pa., April 9, 1756, came to the District about the time of the Revolution, and married Betsy Cloud in 1779. Isaac bought a mill-seat on Rock Creek and built Peirce's Mill about 1800. You have seen cut in stone in the spring house west of the mill, this 'B. I. P. 1801.' You might infer the meaning as 'Built by Isaac Peirce,' but the late Abner Peirce Shoemaker interpreted it as 'Betsy and Isaac Peirce, 1801.' The children of Isaac and Betsy Peirce were Amy, born 1780; Job, born 1781, married Sarah Harvey; Anne, born 1783, married Samuel Simonton; Abner Cloud Peirce, born 1785, died 1851, and inherited the mill property; Hannah, born 1789, married Hayes Speakman, died 1875; Mary, born 1791; Betsy, 1793; Joshua, born 1795; married Susan Coats, daughter of Jacob Coats of Philadelphia. Joshua died in 1869, and in the National Intelligencer, April 12, that year, was this: 'Mr. Joshua Peirce, one of the oldest citizens of Washington died yesterday afternoon at his residence, Linnean Hill, near the city, in the 75th year of his age. Mr. Peirce was well known to our citizens generally, for many years being engaged in the propagation of rare trees and plants, and was the owner of a square of ground near the State Department, which he used as a branch of his nursery at Linnean Hill.' The Linnean Hill property was left by Mr. Peirce to Peirce Klingle, a nephew of Mrs. Peirce, and it was in possession of the Klingle family at the time of its inclusion in Rock Creek Park in 1890." I am looking for the parents of Stephen Peirce/Pierce b. 1759 d.06-02-1832 m. 08-08-1781 Susannah Thetford b. 01-18-1760 d. 04-18-1835. Elizabeth Hieatt Pierce then married Caleb's brother Aholiab and they had 3 children: Susannah Thetford Pierce ( my great grandmother), Mary Frances Pierce and James Hervey Pierce. We assume that Caleb died before 1826 when Aholiab and Elizabeth married. We are fairly certain that the children of Stephen and Susannah Thetford Pierce were in KY and maybe born in KY but that is not definite. Good Evening: I have found out who the William James PIERCE (1868-1910) was that married Mary C. RICHTER (1876-1906), daughter of John C. RICHTER, Sr. (1848-1907) and Alice Elizabeth DANIEL (1854-1924) in 1900. He was the son of James H. PIERCE (1948-1879) and Artilla BEAUCHAMP of Oxford, Lafayette County, MS. This information is from the PIERCE Project. According to this information, the PIERCES were originally from Laurel, Franklin County, IN and James's parents were Harvey PIERCE and Sarah DICKERSON. He descended from the Benjamin PIERCE Family of Scituate, Plymouth County, MA. This Pierce Project information also agrees with my primary source information on this family.... I also feel that Artilla was out of the William BEAUCHAMP family of Worcester County, Md that migrated to Meriwether County, GA by 1838. This is the same family into which Ruth Birney SMITH, daughter of James Emmett SMITH and Grace Lee McCLELLAN, married into. Ruth Birney SMITH married Paul BEAUCHAMP in 1921. Grace McCLELLAN was the daughter of Harriett Ann TATUM and Leander Calvin McCLELLAN and grand daughter of Margaret POTTER and Joseph John TATUM. Margaret was the younger sister of Anne Eliza POTTER who married Charles W. RICHTER, Sr. about 1832. Mary C. RICHTER was the grand daughter of Charles and Anne Eliza POTTER of Madison Morgan County, GA. Grace's sister was Alice Josephine McCLELLAN (1856-1907), the founder of the PTA in 1897. Alice married, first, Alonzo James WHITE, Jr. Esq. (1845-1877) of Charleston, SC and second she married Theodore Weld BIRNEY, Esq. of Chevy Chase, MD. Other information about the PIERCES of Oxford, MS. Edward B. PIERCE, brother of William, was born about 1867 and was the Secretary to the President of the University of Mississippi at some point. We know that by 1910 he as a VP of the Chicago and Rock Island Rail Road. James H. PIERCE had a brother, Edward D. PIERCE born 1850 who was in 1910 "of Hattiesburg, MS." An older sister, Mary D. PIERCE,born 1846 married a Leonidas LANE in 1865 and a Simeon D. TUCKER of Geneva, OH, second. All of these children of Harvey PIERCE and Sarah DICKERSON were born in Laurel, Franklin County, IN. Edward and William PIERCE had a sister, Eula (or Lila) PIERCE born about 1875 who married Dr. Matthew S. DIBRELL, MD of Van Buren, Crawford County, AR before 1900. Artilla PIERCE is living with them in 1910-1920. If you have any information on this family I would appreciate it, especially any connections to a DANIEL, O'DANIEL, DONALD, DONNELL McDANIEL or McDONALD family. Thanks, in advance... John R. Hi, The previous post I posted a few days ago about this PIERCE family was slightly incorrect. It was incorrect because the 1910 newspaper obit of William James PIERCE (1868-1910) was incorrect. William James PIERCE had a uncle named Edward W. PIERCE and this part of the of the obit seems to be correct however he may have lived in Yalobusha County, MS and not Hattiesburg, MS as stated in the obit. However, his mother, who was referred to in the obit as a Mrs. DIBBLE, was incorrect. She was still Artilla PIERCE, a widow then living with her daughter who was married to Dr. Martin S. DIBBRELL, MD and they all lived in District 1, Van Buren TWP, Crawford County, AR in 1910. PIERCE's sister's name was Eula J. Pierce DIBBRELL, age 35, and she was born about 1875 which matches the time frame of this PIERCE family. The mother, Artilla, was age 60 in 1910, born MS which also matches the profile of this family. Here are their census records from 1910. If you have any information on this family, I would like to hear from you. I am still curious as to the brother of William James PIERCE, who was identified in his 1910 obit as Edward B., PIERCE, a VP of the Chicago and Rock Island Rail Road in this 1910 obit. If you have any information on this family, I would like to hear from you...... 1910 Crawford County Census, District 1, Van Buren TWP, household 567 DIBBRELL, Martin S. head, male, age 42, born AR, father born AR, mother born AR, physician DIBBRELL, Eula J. wife, female, age 35, born MS, father born IN, mother born MS DIBBRELL, Artilla, daughter, female, age 12, born AR, father born AR, mother born MS DIBBRELL, James P., son, male, age 5, born AR, father born AR, mother born MS PIERCE, Artilla, mother-in-law, female, age 60, born MS, father born TN, mother born TN John R. Clarke To: ARCRAWFO-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, August 05, 2002 6:46 AM Subject: Introduction - William James PIERCE (1868-1910) Good evening, I have somewhat of a mystery concerning the ancestors of William James PIERCE (or PEIRCE 1868-1910) who married my aunt, Mary C. RICHTER (1876-1906) in 1900. I have a copy of his obituary as printed in the "Madisonian," the newspaper of Madison, Morgan County, GA. Here is what I know about him. 1. He grew up in Oxford, MS. 2. He had a brother named the Hon. Edward B. PEIRCE who in 1910 was a VP of the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad and lived in Chicago, IL. 3. He had a sister who lived with his mother in Van Buren, AR in 1900. 4. His father was dead by 1910 and his mother had married a Mr. DIBBLE (or DIBRELL) and they lived in Van Buren, AR in 1910. 5. He had an uncle named Edward D. PEIRCE who lived in Hattiesburg, MS in 1910. 6. He married my aunt, Mary C. RICHTER in Madison, GA in 1900. She died in 1906 in Godfrey, Morgan County, GA and was buried in the Richter family lot in the Madison City Cemetery. They had no children. . 7. He worked for the S. A. TURNELL Company in Madison, GA as an accountant in 1910. 8. He died in Rochester, MN in 1910 9. His body was returned to Madison, GA by his brother in his private railroad car and was buried with his late wife in the John C. RICHTER Family lot in the Madison City Cemetery. A General. H. A. PIERCE of Crawford County, AR may have some relationship to this family since he is the only PIERCE listed in their historical index. If any of this sounds familiar to you, I would like to hear from you. Thanks, in advance.. John R. Thought this might be of interest it was sent to me by Ken Johnson. YOU ARE YOUR OWN COUSIN >From the column "Publisher's Corner" by Graham Ponder in the Madisonian, Madison, Georgia. Guy Murchie, in his book "The Seven Mysteries of Life" proves that we are all cousins. Murchie says, "Although few people seem to realize it, man's relation to himself is fairly easy to measure and is surprisingly close. In fact, no human being, of any race, can be less closely related to any other human being than approximately fiftieth cousin, and most of us are a lot closer. It means simply that the family tree of all of us, of whatever orgin or trait, must meet and merge into one genetic tree of all humanity by the time they have spread into our ancestries for about fifty generations." "Just use simple mathematics, 2 parents equal 4 grandparents, equal 8 great-grandparents, 16 great-great-grandparents, etc. The thirtieth power of two 1,073,741,824 is greater than was the earth's population thirty generations ago, in the thirteenth century; great than the world's population at that time. "You cannot go on doubling your ancestors for more than a few generations into the past for inevitably the same ancestors will appear on both your father's and your mother's sides of the family tree, reducing the total number. This does not allow you to double the rate during that generation, and surely this would begin to happen more and more often as you go back in time. Spouses are not just spouses, they also become very distant cousins, not only related by marriage but also by "blood" because somewhere in the past they share ancestors."
