replying to B & C Pierce: I don't seem to understand. What were the references you listed (which did not show up here, because of the encoding scheme your email program used)? You said "message boards". Those went out when web browsers arrived (those which remained were converted to interactive web sites). So, did you list mailing lists?? Or what? If you listed pearce mailing lists, I'd love to have subscription info for them. :-) acp ******* "Too many stupid people. I meant to include this in the original message but forgot. Before posting, I did search the PIERCE-L archives for all references to Greene County, Tennessee. I found numerous references to a Nancy Ann Pierce who was born in 1863 in Greene County, and to a James Pierce who was born in Virginia and died in 1833 in Greene County. Those messages were all very suggestive, but the 1863 Nancy Ann Pierce couldn't be my Nancy Ann Pierce who was born in 1839, and the James Pierce who died in 1833 couldn't be the father of my Nancy Ann Pierce who was born in 1839. But he could perhaps be her grandfather or something like that. Jerry Bryan ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
I am looking for ancestors of Nancy Ann Pierce who was born in 1839. I believe but do not know for sure that she was born in Greene County, Tennessee. I do know that she was born 15 Jan 1839, she was married 23 Sep 1860 in Greene County, Tennessee to George Tivis Cox, and she died 22 July 1880 in Greene County, Tennessee. I have excellent data on her descendants which I would be happy to share, but her ancestors are a bit of a brick wall. I suspect that she may be the daughter of James Pierce and an unknown wife. Here is an 1850 Greene County census entry that may include my Nancy Ann. James Peirce 46 M Farmer 400 Ten Spriddy 30 F Ten William E. 20 M Farmer Ten Martha C. 22 F Ten John E. 18 M Farmer Ten Mary M. 16 F Ten Nancy A. 10 F Ten James W. 8 M Ten Thomas 4 M Ten Andrew Y. Mitchell 10 M Ten Lorinda J. Mitchell 8 F Ten Claudius 4 M Ten (The above is a transcription I found on the Internet. I also have a transcription which my uncle found at the Greene County library. It agrees in general with the one on the Internet, but differs slightly in detail. It has James Pierce, wife Spiddy, and the last two children are Lisinda J. Mitchell and Clanders. All of the various spellings above -- Pierce vs. Peirce etc. -- are careful intentions, not typos.) Under normal circumstances, I would suspect the Mitchell children of being nieces and nephews or something like that. But Spiddy is too young to be the mother of the older Pierce children. Also, I have found a Greene County marriage for James Pierce to Spitty Michel on 19 Mar 1850. I would therefore guess this is a second marriage and that the Mitchell children are Spiddy/Spriddy/Spitty's children by her first marriage to a Mitchell. So even if this is my Nancy Ann Pierce, nothing here would give me any information about the first wife of James Pierce nor about the maiden name of Spiddy. Any information anybody has on this line would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. I just noticed this item in my notes. Nita King's Montain and Its Hereos: History of the Battle of King's Mountain William Anderson, of Campbell's regiment; Joseph Phillips, of Cleveland's men; Jacob Norris, James Pearce, and Gideon Harrison, of Sevier's regiment, also furnished statements that it was his bay horse--not his bald-faced black--that Col. Campbell rode in the earlier part of the action.
