In the summer of 1999, Julie Payette, who will receive an honorary doctor of science degree, served as a mission specialist on the space shuttle, becoming only the third Canadian to operate the Canadarm in orbit and the first to enter the International Space Station. She earned her master's in electrical engineering from U of T in 1990 and is currently the chief astronaut for the Canadian Space Agency and a liaison officer and member of the Crew Test Support Team, responsible for International Space Station test activities in Russia and Europe. She is a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and a council member of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada as well as a member of 'Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec and Les Amies d'affaires du Ritz.
