    1. [PIATT] Join Us at the 17th Piatt Researchers Conference 2001

    3. Hi list, Things are beginning to settle down around here but I'm way behind on my e-mail so please give me a little longer on that activity. Because there have been several mentions of the Piatt Conference I thought I'd post information here again. First, a little history: For the past 16 years a small group of persons interested in the Piatt history has met for a week in the summer. We have used college dormitory facilities to keep costs down and to give us a place to congregate in the evenings to share our findings of the day. We have met in various states, always where there were primary Piatt records to be found or near a premier research facility. A few of our locations have been Washington PA, Fort Wayne IN, Fairfax VA, Washington DC, Carlisle PA, Cincinnati OH. This summer we will meet at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, Bucks County, PA. The time is fast approaching. I do hope that many of you, especially ones who have never attended a conference, will make an effort to join us in Doylestown. The proximity of the New Jersey State Archives, as well as counties important to Piatts (such as Hunterdon and Warren) will provide opportunities to find new information and, we hope, to fit some pieces of this daunting puzzle together. There are still many questions to be answered about the generations between Rene Piatt, who died in 1705, and the Piatts who left New Jersey, probably after the Revolution, for new territory in Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. Many of these traveling Piatts appeared in the 1820 census, seemingly droping from the sky, but most likely coming from New Jersey or being children of New Jersey parents. On a typical day we have breakfast in the college cafeteria, then we break into groups to go researching. Make up of the groups and destinations can change from day to day. In the evening, after dinner, we gather in a lounge area to share and discuss the day's research. With so much to be reviewed at the New Jersey State Archives and other sites, we need many pairs of eyes helping us. Please consider joining us at the: 17th PIATT RESEARCHERS' CONFERENCE 24-30 JUNE 2001 DELAWARE VALLEY COLLEGE, Doylestown PA. Rooms are $20 per person per night. You may book a single room or a double room. Breakfast only will be $3.00. (I believe this is only a pay if you eat situation but I will have to confirm it.) We will need to furnish our own pillows and bed linens. I must contact the college again for the name of our dormitory and to learn whether the dormitory is air conditioned. No room deposit is needed prior to the conference, but there is a $20.00 cash deposit payable to the college when you receive your room key. When the key is returned at the end of the conference, the deposit will be refunded by the college. Please e-mail your reservation to me me at LaPiatt@worldnet.att.net as soon as you know that you will be able to join us this summer. This invitation is open to anyone interested in the Piatt/Pyatt, etc surname. Again, emphasis will be on gathering records from the State Archives at Trenton NJ and in Hunterdon and surrounding counties of NJ. Bucks Co PA where Doylestown is would offer research opportunities. I understand there is a nice library in Flemington NJ, too. Morristown NJ and Jockey Hollow, where Major Daniel Piatt died during the Revolution, would be about an hour and a half away. -- Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH
