Hi Laverne, List Is it ok to attend just part of the week? If so, sign me up for the nights of the 24, 25, 26, and 27 and please let me know how late I can check in--Im driving about 9 hours. > 17th PIATT RESEARCHERS' CONFERENCE > 24-30 JUNE 2001 > DELAWARE VALLEY COLLEGE, Doylestown PA. > > Rooms are $20 per person per night. You may book a single room or a double room. > Is that $20 for either type of room? Or would that go to $40 to have a single? If it is 20, I would like a single. Is there an itinerary? If so I would like that in advance if possible so that I can choose what to bring with me. I have about 45 families I can do in that area--I want to watch for them as I research. Thanks, Robin Pyatt Bellamy Toronto, Ontario

Those of you who have not, at some point, (especially over the P/A) been called "Pirate, Peet, Pu-yat, Pit, Patti, Pie-to. Pee-yut, Pyie-yet, Put", etc., have not lived yet, and should be grateful for your good fortune. In TX, we prefer Pight or Pah-ut, honest. Really, somewhere in between the two. . . Yours, for the greater good, Ed Pyeatt
Hi Nancy, Thanks for your good words and kind thoughts. Yes, we try to keep on and not give up. Ed continues to do well. And my mother is about 75% I'd say, and improving. Her appetite has returned, she's cooking for herself and getting around more normally, thank goodness. I'm almost caught up with my e-mail. I think I have about 4 more to do but not tonight. They will take a little longer so can wait until tomorrow or Thursday. We get a whole two days off for Spring Break! But you can bet I will enjoy those days like no others. -- Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH

Yes, I sent a brief reply to Twood email I believe on 4/5/01. As most of you know I am still in my winter home in Florida without my records and therefore cannot reply in definite terms. But, from memory, I will relate what I know until I can get a name for you of the then present owner of Federal Hall. Back in the late 1970s or very early 1980s Joe Kearney made several attempts to get into Federal Hall, succeeding on the second try. He was then greeted by the owner who politely threw him off the property and threatened him with a lawsuit. I have the property owners name and can supply it if anyone is interested after I get home. The plaque was stolen, an award offered and it turned up after the reward was paid and returned to the gravesite. It was promptly stolen again, the same $100.00 award offered and promptly "found" and returned. The plaque was not returned to the cemetery as Joe Kearney and I were in the process of possibly removing the remains back to NJ with his mother. Some years later, I donated this plaque to the owner of the "Benjamin Piatt House" in West Liberty, Ohio where the Piatt Castles are located. It was understood by me that it was to go on display there. Yes, Laverne, without my records I believe your descriptive location is correct. The road back to the cemetery was closed many years ago and therefore the cemetery is on the original Jacob Piatt property, without access, as far as I know. Dick Piatt
Laverne--How do we pay for this? Do we pay you or just do it all at the school? Can I put it on my credit card? I haven't seen a reply to the query about Federal Hall, so I am going to venture a _guess_ as to its location. I trust someone will offer corrections as to these estimations. (I may have missed a response as I'm not yet through all the accumulated e-mail, though.) I have two maps to compare. The map of Petersburg Precinct of Boone Co KY from "Atlas of Boone, Kenton & Campbell Co KY, 1883" shows properties of Charles D Piatt and Jac [sic] Piatt off a road that is identified on the current DeLorme "Kentucky Atlas and Gazetteer" as Old Ferry Road. The 1883 map shows the road as running from the Petersburg-Burlington Turnpike (now KY 20) to the river across from Lawrenceburg IN and then south looping back to the Petersburg-Burlington Turnpike east of Petersburg. This south running section is identified as the Lawrenceburg Ferry Road. >From the more easterly departure from the Petersburg-Burlington Turnpike the road ran west along a creek and the Jac Piatt property was shown on the 1883 map as being on the riverside (west) slope of the ridge on the south side of the road. The old map shows three buildings on this property connected with dotted lines (private paths?) but it is the western most of the three that is marked with a "Res." The property of Chas D Piatt was a bit farther north and closer to the river than that of Jac Piatt. Jacob Piatt of Federal Hall was not alive in 1883. I don't know how long his property was in the Piatt family. However, the current DeLorme topographical atlas makes this property of Jac Piatt a good guess to be Federal Hall. Today this same property would be inaccessible by road or by river, only by foot. The current Old Ferry Road still turns off KY Route 20 at the same point but runs only half way to the river--not nearly far enough to reach the old Jac Piatt property. The south leg of the old road still runs from the old ferry location across from Lawrenceburg south to where it rejoins KY 20 east of Petersburg. But the middle portion of the Old Ferry Road has been abandoned. Old Ferry Road would be just a short distance west southwest on KY 20 from the I-275 interchange, about 1/3 of the way from the interchange to Petersburg. It is my understanding that pioneer Piatt researcher the late Joe Kearney was able to obtain access to this property by stealth. I believe the owner at the time was not friendly to anyone wanting access. I have seen photocopies of photos of the ruins. As photocopies of dark photographs the images are quite poor. I do not remember offhand who took the original photographs. I believe that Jacob's grave on the property is marked with a plaque with an epitaph similar to the one quoted in the list query and that Joe Kearney placed this plaque twice, it having been stolen once. I also think that a Piatt researcher in Cincinnati hiked to the ruins within the last 5 years or so but I'm relying on memory here and don't have proof at hand. I can't remember which Cincinnati Piatt this one other than his name was Piatt. This isn't very definitive but it is a start. Additional comments appreciated. -- Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH
As a boy in my family it was "Pie'-it", and the only time I ever heard "Pee-ott'" was it an aunts graduation, When I went into the military I was called "Pee-ott'". Coming home most of the family had also changed to saying "Pee-ott'". As you can see not even the Piatts' know how to say their name, But we're still good people. David Piatt Shelby Twp., Mich.
It's "Pie'-it" in Monroe, Ashland and Richland Counties in Ohio, too. I've also heard "Pie'-att'" with almost equal emphasis on each syllable. And there's the French "Pee-ott'" retained by the Castle folks. I've also been told that Pyott can be pronounces "Pie'-ote." All pronounciations are invited to the conference in June! -- Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH
We pronounce it pie'-it also. Amanda Cincinnati, OH
Hi list, Things are beginning to settle down around here but I'm way behind on my e-mail so please give me a little longer on that activity. Because there have been several mentions of the Piatt Conference I thought I'd post information here again. First, a little history: For the past 16 years a small group of persons interested in the Piatt history has met for a week in the summer. We have used college dormitory facilities to keep costs down and to give us a place to congregate in the evenings to share our findings of the day. We have met in various states, always where there were primary Piatt records to be found or near a premier research facility. A few of our locations have been Washington PA, Fort Wayne IN, Fairfax VA, Washington DC, Carlisle PA, Cincinnati OH. This summer we will meet at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, Bucks County, PA. The time is fast approaching. I do hope that many of you, especially ones who have never attended a conference, will make an effort to join us in Doylestown. The proximity of the New Jersey State Archives, as well as counties important to Piatts (such as Hunterdon and Warren) will provide opportunities to find new information and, we hope, to fit some pieces of this daunting puzzle together. There are still many questions to be answered about the generations between Rene Piatt, who died in 1705, and the Piatts who left New Jersey, probably after the Revolution, for new territory in Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. Many of these traveling Piatts appeared in the 1820 census, seemingly droping from the sky, but most likely coming from New Jersey or being children of New Jersey parents. On a typical day we have breakfast in the college cafeteria, then we break into groups to go researching. Make up of the groups and destinations can change from day to day. In the evening, after dinner, we gather in a lounge area to share and discuss the day's research. With so much to be reviewed at the New Jersey State Archives and other sites, we need many pairs of eyes helping us. Please consider joining us at the: 17th PIATT RESEARCHERS' CONFERENCE 24-30 JUNE 2001 DELAWARE VALLEY COLLEGE, Doylestown PA. Rooms are $20 per person per night. You may book a single room or a double room. Breakfast only will be $3.00. (I believe this is only a pay if you eat situation but I will have to confirm it.) We will need to furnish our own pillows and bed linens. I must contact the college again for the name of our dormitory and to learn whether the dormitory is air conditioned. No room deposit is needed prior to the conference, but there is a $20.00 cash deposit payable to the college when you receive your room key. When the key is returned at the end of the conference, the deposit will be refunded by the college. Please e-mail your reservation to me me at LaPiatt@worldnet.att.net as soon as you know that you will be able to join us this summer. This invitation is open to anyone interested in the Piatt/Pyatt, etc surname. Again, emphasis will be on gathering records from the State Archives at Trenton NJ and in Hunterdon and surrounding counties of NJ. Bucks Co PA where Doylestown is would offer research opportunities. I understand there is a nice library in Flemington NJ, too. Morristown NJ and Jockey Hollow, where Major Daniel Piatt died during the Revolution, would be about an hour and a half away. -- Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH
(replying to all three addresses as Im not sure which one is actually Anne's) My Dad and his family (from western WV) pronounce it pie'-it but here in Toronto, actually at my daughters school, there is a family named Piette and they pronounce it Pee-et'-ee. I have also heard pee'-ott.
