    1. [PIATT] Benjamin Piatt and Isabel, Monroe Co OH
    2. Laverne Piatt
    3. For Maggie, I knew that I had posted information about Benjamin Piatt and wife Isabel of Monroe Co OH some time ago. This couple had twin daughters Sarah and _Rosetta_ who were apparently adopted by Calvin Flannigan. I decided to search the archives of the list at http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=PIATT and hit the jackpot on the first try. Here's what was posted back in 1999 and there could have been more posted later. Try a a search in 2000 and 2001 to see if more is there. I believe information might be posted concerning an early death of Benjamin. If you can't find it, let me know. Note: If the link above doesn't work try accessing the archives from the PIATT-L subscription page at: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/p/piatt.html ***** Precious little information is known about Isabell PALMER and Benjamin PIATT. All I have is: 7 April 1874, Isabel PALMER and Benjamin PIATT were married by Rev Isaac Williams, Monroe Co OH Marriage Book 2, page 18. 2 Jan 1879, Benjamin F PIATT died, age 24 years (the same Benjamin?) no death record cited 5 Jan 1884, John McVAY and Isabel PIATT were married by J R Camden JP, Monroe Co OH Marriage Book 3, page 144 (application by Amos Mobberly) (Isabel Palmer Piatt?) 1880 census, Monroe Co OH, Graysville Washington Twp, 180/183 Calvin Flanigan 50 OH OH OH Nancy, wife 48 OH OH OH Ebenezer Hall 14 OH OH OH nephew Rosetta PIATT 5 OH OH OH adopted daughter Sarah E PIATT 5 OH OH OH adopted daughter In 1900 Calvin and Nancy Flanigan were living alone. More work is needed for confirmation, though. Laverne Ingram Piatt -- Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH

    3. For Robin, Thanks for posting the Dunham information. This proves that the Dunhams did come west in time. I'm wondering if they may have taken a more southerly route than the Monroe Co Piatts did in their trek. It would be logical to think that the Dunhams came from New Jersey because there were so many Dunhams there. In Hampshire Co WV a couple of years ago I discovered a Jersey Mountain Road and subsequently learned that there was migration from New Jersey to this area. And Cornelius Peatt and Moses Peatt have been found not too far west of this area. I should go back to look at my information on this are again, but this time looking more closely for Dunham. -- Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH

    3. For Amanda and others, Lake Hope is near Athens in Athens Co OH. I drove out there when my parents visited me at Ohio University and brought a CAR. Piatt Park in Monroe Co OH includes the Davis Caves. Although I haven't yet been there I've seen photos of this spectacular area and have read that there are plants growing there that don't grow anywhere else until you reach Canada. Apparently these plants are remnants of old growth and climate and have not been disturbed there over centuries. The park is located in Adams Township of Monroe Co OH, north off SR 78 east of Woodsfield. The turn-off is well marked. One would think that the property was once owned by a Davis family and may have been, but when the Monroe Co Park District bought the land, they bought it from descendants of Isaac and Adda Grant Piatt. The lineage for this Isaac would be: .Rene Piatt and Elizabeth Sheffield (NJ) ..Jacob Piatt and Mary Hull (NJ, PA) ...Jacob Piatt and Jean Paul (PA) ....Jacob Piatt and Elizabeth Dunham (PA) .....James Piatt (Sr) and Nancy Coleman (PA to Monroe Co OH) ......Benjamin Piatt and Louisa _____ (Hall?) .......Hannibal H Piatt and Elizabeth Shaw ........Isaac Newton Piatt (1879-1956) and Adda Grant -- Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH

    1. [PIATT] Lewis Piatt, Adams Co OH/Cincinati Piatts
    2. Laverne Piatt
    3. For Amanda, No, I'm not saying that there is no connection between Lewis Piatt and the Cincinnati Piatts, just that the connection is not yet known. The Cincinnati Piatts are, probably, the most documented of any of the Piatt lines. The line of Lewis Piatt of Adams Co OH another matter. Lewis Piatt was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. In his pension application he stated that he was born 3 Apr 1766 in Westchester Co NY. I'm not sure how much research has been done in the early records of Westchester Co NY but it is likely that Lewis was a son of a male taxpayer in Westchester Co NY in 1766. Anyone have access to early NY records? Rene Piatt died in New Jersey in 1705. Assuming that Lewis is a descent of Rene, how many generations of separation can there be--two, three? We don't know how Lewis's parents got to Westchester Co NY or who they were at this time. But if we could get a breakthrough, a lot of questions could be answered. Lewis Piatt "entered the Service as a volunteer at the age of thirteen at Longridge, Westchester Co NY, under the Command of Captain Ayers and Colonel Courtland, to guard cattle and served a tour of three months, guarding cattle day and night, being on duty constantly, when he was discharged." His third and fifth tours were also entered into in Westchester Co NY. He second and fourth tours were entered into in Connecticut. After the war Lewis moved to Sussex Co NJ where he lived about 10 years. Is this a clue that he had family in this county? It could be beneficial to look at tax records for Sussex Co NJ for 1781-1791 to see which Piatts lived there at that time. Then he moved to Westmoreland Co PA. Lewis Piatt married in Westmoreland Co PA on 1 Feb 1791 to Catherine McHenry. Subsequently he made records in Ohio Co (W)VA from at least 1806 to 1819. In 1820 he was listed in the census of Tiffin Twp, Adams Co OH. He died in Jefferson Twp, Adams Co OH on 6 Oct 1851. If the link between Lewis and Rene could be established then the degree of cousinship could be established between Lewis and the Cincinnati Piatts. 3. For David Lodge, I have a copy of The Tribe of Jacob by N Louise Lodge. The book came with Lynn White's materials. This copy was a third edition, copyright 1934. Lynn saved her order form in the book so I know what she purchased this copy in 1986 from John E Chandler--Books, Chicago, 312.929.8298. I have no idea whether this firm is still in business. As to finding a copy of the book now, I would try online sites which list book dealers. How sad to learn that Lodge's papers were destroyed. It's really too bad that no provision was made for the papers or that the Ladies Home could not make an effort to find a relative who would take them. Who knows what important links might have been contained in those papers. Let this be a lesson to all of us to make arrangements for our papers and other materials. I'm sorry to misstate Louise Lodge's death date. I should have said "about 1936" since I didn't check my notes and was writing from memory--a dangerous thing to do as time goes on. Thanks for filling us in on Louise Lodge. The other publication she had a hand in, I believe, was called "Everybody's Ancestry." I have no copies of this publication but I believe there were about four issues published and I think the time frame was 1917. I have seen photo copies of selected pages of this publication and I think that it was a genealogical publication that was not confined to the Piatt name. Sorry I couldn't be of more help concerning Lodge's publications. -- Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH

    3. For Elise, No, I didn't mean that John would have been identified by his wife's name in New Jersey at the time he was there but that the family on down the line might have confused the two phrases when referring to him. However, you have a good point when you say that he could have been of French descent among many Dutch. So he could have been identified by his French heritage regardless of whether he was the immigrant or not. 3. The main attraction, so to speak, in Piatt Park is a series of erosion caves. These "caves" which are more like overhangs were formed when the creek bed eroded the softer soil below a sandstone stratum. They really are not caves in the classic sense. The park contains a very steep-sided valley, or what folks in that part of the country would call a "holler." You really should visit the area to experience these unusual structures. In the winter, they are coverd by vast sheets of ice and giant icicles that are formed from the seeping ground water. I have traveled quite a bit and have been known to climb a rock or two and have seen anything quite like these very unique structures. The only other area I have seen quite like Davis' Caves in Piatt Park is in Belmont County, Ohio at Raven's Rocks. ----- Original Message ----- From: <ALKemen77@cs.com> To: <PIATT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 21, 2001 1:15 PM Subject: Re: [PIATT] Piatt Park, Monroe Co OH > Where are the 'Davis Caves in Piatt Park' located. 3. For anyone interested, I have recently been lost and almost helpless because of some wierd problem with my computer which prevented me from getting my e-mail regularly. When I came back from a 9 day vacation and found it working again, I also found 125 e-mail messages from PIATT-L in addition to my other personal correspondence. Though I have found very little of it that I can definitely connect to my line, I have enjoyed it all and find it very interesting. For example, the coincidences; Sandy, who is using her sister Carol's e-mail address -- I have a sister-in-law Carol Bray PIATT who also has a sister named Sandy; and David C. PIATT, who agrees that we are "all good people" -- I, too, share his sentiment and have a son named David Charles PIATT. Now for Laverne, After reading over those 125 messages, in chronilogical but not all in consecutive order, I am very impressed with Laverne's method of defining who a specific message is intended "for". And I want to personally thank her and Richard O. PIATT for their constant time and efforts toward tying all the PIATT lines together. For Christine, As you had the provable part of my line on the chart you brought to the 2000 Conference, I assume that I sent it to you. However, I'm so convinced of one more generation that I'm willing to include it in my lineage. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to prove it and, as a result, cannot trace back to Rene. The extra generation is: ..Elijah PIATT ca 1760 m. Rebecca MANNING (?) 1768-1849 .....Charles PIATT 1795-ca 1879 m 1813 Elizabeth ROSE 1797- ? ........Elijah C. PIATT 1827-1883 m 1851 Elizabeth E. RUTHERFORD 1833-1917 ...........Fred R. PIATT 1861-1939 m 1886 Lizzie CLOSSER 1864-1952 ..............Donovan E. PIATT 1893-1975 m 1916 Leah M JAMES 1893-1958 .................James D. PIATT (me) 1929- m 1950 Edith C. ROSS We have 7 children and 13 grandchildren (no Gr. grandch. yet) For Barbara Angelo, Several years ago, while doing some research in Tioga and Chemung Counties, NY, for a deed belonging to Jo Piatt LAUER, I found several PIATT names in that area. You may already have everything I have but I will try to get those names and their connections together so I can bring them to you at the Conference. Jim Piatt

    3. For Laverne Piatt et al: Nannie Louise Lodge is my grandfather's sister. I have heard for some time about the book she wrote ('The Tribe of Jacob') but have never seen a copy. Also, I have heard of a periodical that she wrote (edited?/contributed to?) but do not know the name. I would appreciate it if you could provide any help in locating a copy of this book. Family stories tell that when Aunt Louise died (at the 'Old Ladies Home', in Covington KY), she left a 'trunkfull' of material of unknown but presumably family/genealogical provenance. By the time my grandfather found out about her death, the material had been 'thrown out'. My great grandfather (Charles Elwood Lodge) died in 1906 in Springfield, MO. when my grandfather was about fourteen. There was little contact with Aunt Louise or thier older brother (Jacob Strader Lodge) after that time, although she apparantly came to Missouri for a visit sometime in the 30s. Much of this info comes from my gradmother about thirty years ago - my grandfather was always very reticent about discussing this. btw, I have Aunt Louise's date of death as 12 Mar 1939. -david lodge Laverne Piatt wrote: <snip> > > . . . . . 3. For Laverne, As I said before, I think John & Frances is possible, but considering the status of women in his era, I doubt that he would be identified as her husband. I have not gotten out Joe Kearney's charts, but, if my memory is good, he was a Franchman living in a mainly Dutch settlement and to have identified him as John of France seems more likely. People were much closer to the old country than we are all these generations later and it never crossed my mind that it meant anything other than identifying his ancestry. Who knows? Perhaps he flaunted his difference from the rest of the community. I would also think his appearance would have immediately identified him as not being Dutch. The French and Dutch do not have the same coloring or body type. I have temporarily put away my Piatt work and gone back to working on my current book. I will be leaving next Satuday [28th] for two weeks out west and I need to finish up some work on the Quaker families named Coale before I totally forget what I have done. Elise

    3. Laverne, I originally knew this place as Davis' Caves and many of the locals still say "Davis Caves in Piatt Park." I was wondering if there was a connection to the Piatt line somewhere. When I was a kid, it was a pretty good hike, and a bit dangerous due to the steep slopes, to get into the area. Since the county made it a park it is a very nice walk through. My favorite time to go is at the end of winter, before the weather gets warm. The "caves" are covered in ice and it is an amazing site to see. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Laverne Piatt" <LaPiatt@worldnet.att.net> To: <PIATT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 19, 2001 8:52 PM Subject: [PIATT] Piatt Park, Monroe Co OH > The Monroe Co OH website has a nice page on Piatt Park which is east of > Woodsfield off SR 78. 3. For Nancy, Thanks for the information on the burial site of Sarah Morgan Bryan Piatt. I knew her husband was buried in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati but I guess I had assumed that she might be buried in Caldwell as she was living with her son Cecil there when she died. I checked her obituary in the Piatt Family Newsletter and it did not give her burial place. I'm glad to know that both she and her husband are in the same cemetery. It's only fitting. And you've saved me a wild goose chase in Caldwell NJ this summer. A few years ago some of the Piatts at the researchers' conference went to Spring Grove cemetery and located some Piatt graves there. It is a large and beautiful cemetery. And the records are easily accessible. I didn't visit it at the time as I was probably chasing some dusty tome in an archive or over in Boone Co looking for other Piatts. Yes, SMB and JJ Piatt did spend a number of years in Ireland where she wrote poetry. I believe this fact was omitted from the article in the Columbus Dispatch. Another time when I was in the Cincinnati are I located the property at North Bend where SMB and JJ Piatt lived. It is on the northwest corner of Cliff Road, running along the Ohio River, and Rittenhouse Road. The section of the property which lies across the Cliff Road from the residence and over looks the river offers the most beautiful view of North Bend Bottom and Boone Co KY that can ever be imagined. No doubt sunsets there are unsurpassed. -- Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH

    2. Laverne, My name is Nancy, and I have been the go between for Elise and my sister-in-law Carolyn Mills who lives in the old Lewis Piatt house. I was reading her your posting about Sarah Morgan Bryan Piatt when she read me some very interesting information that came from the Kentucky Enclyopedia. It says that when her husband died in 1917 that Sarah moved to Caldwell N.J. and lived with her son Cecil until her death. She died December 22, 1919, but is buried in Springrove Cemetery in Cincinnati. She also said that in 1882 that John James took Post of Us Consul in Cork Ireland, and that they lived there for 13 years. Lot of her poems were published when they lived there.

    2. Laverne Piatt
    3. Piatt Park in Cincinnati was originally named Piatt Park, then renamed for James A Garfield, but renamed again to Piatt Park just a few years ago. It is a narrow park in the heart of downtown but I can't quote the boundary streets from memory. It was named for some or one of the early prominent Piatts in Cincinnati, all being from the line of the Five Revolutionary brothers. A few years ago I was shopping in Cinncinati and when the clerk returned my credit card she said, "Thank you, Mrs Pee-ott'." The same day I was shopping in Dayton and the response was "Thank you, Mrs Pie'-ett." For Amanda, The Adams Co Piatts would be cousins to the ones in Cincinnati with the branching of the lines coming in the third generation from two brothers who were sons of Jacob Piatt and Mary Hull. Most of the Adams and Scioto Co Piatts (not including those of Lewis Piatt) descend: .Rene Piatt and Elizabeth Sheffield ..Jacob Piatt and Mary Hull ...Jacob Piatt (oldest son) and Jean Paul ....and on down The Cincinnati Piatts descend: .Rene Piatt and Elizabeth Sheffield ..Jacob Piatt and Mary Hull ...John Piatt (youngest son, "John of France") and Frances Van Vliet Wyckoff ....and on down -- Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH

    3. For Elise, A few years ago when we visited the Pioneer House in Logan Co OH during one of the Piatt Conferences I heard someone behind me say "John of France"--or was it "John and Frances." I couldn't tell. Then I began wondering if the phrase had been altered over the years of retelling. And with the origin of the immigrant in France anyway it could added to confusion. Anyway, it is the line of the Five Revolutionary brothers which told the "John of France" story the more and I began trying to locate the papers of the late Nannie Louise Lodge who wrote "The Tribe of Jacob," which also mentions "John of France." I thought if I could find her correspondence, some light could be shed on the origins of the story. But I've had no luck finding her papers as yet. Any advice on where they might be would be appreciated. Lodge died in Covington KY in 1936 having no direct heirs. The Pioneer House is the log home of Judge Benjamin M Piatt and his wife Elizabeth Barnett Piatt. It fell into disrepair after the death of their son General Abram S Piatt but was discovered by the Younckman family a number of years ago when the Younckmans bought that portion of the Piatt property. The Younckmans restored the house and turned it into the Pioneer House gift shop. Elizabeth Barnett Piatt is said to have run a station on the Underground Railroad here despite the fact that her husband was a federal judge in Cincinnati. Elizabeth's activities are mentioned in an article on the Underground Railroad published in National Geographic, July 1984. Sadly, the article does not mentioned Elizabeth by her given name! -- Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH

    3. For Joann, I don't know the names of the parents of ELIZABETH DUNHAM. What I find strange is that in doing work on this line of her and JACOB PIATT who died in Washington Co PA in 1784 and trying to follow them from the Path Valley of central PA to western PA, I don't run across the DUNHAM name. In the records I've checked such as tax, land, and estate DUNHAM is not there or at least not obviously there. The closest has been DUNNING. So I'm wondering if JACOB went back to New Jersey, where the name is more prevalent, to find his wife. I like your note. I think it is especially important to remind people to cite sources when known and to double check against original records anything that is received from a secondary source such as from another researcher or on internet sites. Even the IGI's information is only as good as the research skills of the submitter. -- Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH
