    3. In addition (I copy from a collection of mailing labels we've gathered over the years - no kidding): Payeatt, Pruitt, Pefeatt, Puatt, Pycatt,Pycott, Pyeagt, Pyealt, Pyeath, Pyetta, Pylatt, Pyed, Puett, Pueatt, Puyeatt, Purett, Pucatt, Pleatt, Pejeat, Pyeall, not to mention the way they pronounce it (27 ways from Sunday!). And finally, the winner: Pzlatt (pronounce that, if you dare). Pirate, indeed! What they don't realize, is how special this makes us. . . secretly, we love it! Ed

    2. This was forwarded to me from a friend. I thought it fit the recent conversation amoung the group well. Hope you all like it. Amanda Cincinnati, OH ___________________________________________________________________________ After spending a frustrating evening pouring over illegible handwriting in badly damaged and out of focus parish registers - and still NOT finding my relatives, I thought it was time to send an open email (at http://www.ofcoursethereisaheaven.com/) to all my "Upstairs" relatives who have gone to Heaven (99% of them) or the Other Place (1%). The text follows. (Feel free to insert your own relative's names where appropriate.) Dear ________: I am your _________ and living in the late 20th century here in ________. I am sitting in front of a microfilm projector (I'll explain what that is in a later email) in a great research library run by really nice people trying to decipher the small and shaky handwriting of your parish's curate. He must have been either vertically challenged or had palsy - because it's unreadable! At least I think it's your parish! I'm not even sure of the decade! Thanks for leaving such a good paper trail. (Sarcasm intended.) According to family legend, you and your wife ___________ had _____ children, some of whom lived beyond infancy. Yet not a single one was recorded in the parish records! I can't even find your marriage certificate. You two WERE married, right? Didn't you know that there would be legions of people like me fanatically spending their waking hours and small fortunes looking for any and all traces of your lives? Were you just stubborn, couldn't afford the fees, or not members of the Established Church? You're wondering, "What's all the fuss, we're dead as doornails?" We're not sure, but I think down here we're infected with the same disease: Rootsus obsessionus. Of course, WE are going to leave better records for our descendants! Anyway, I'm glad I was able to vent my frustrations upward. If I couldn't do that, I'd have probably popped the obnoxious researcher next to me who is right now translating an old record in German - and out loud, for goodness sake! I have an idea.... When I'm "dead-on" (pardon the expression) to finding the correct record, give me some sort of sign. Make the projector bulb flicker twice. Or, if it must be done in the privacy of my home, I have a cocker spaniel. Talk through him. That will get my attention for sure. Thanks for listening. I'll be better in the morning..... I'll be back at the library tomorrow night for Round 14, so catch me there. Sincerely, Your ____________________, ______________________________ Author unknown

    3. This is a partial list of the way I search Piat Piatt Piatte Pyat Pyatt Pyatte Pyeat Pyeatt Pyeatte You need to keep in mind also that when you are in a county that has a Piatt/Pyeatt/Pyatt family....that you need to check for spelling that are created by bad handwriting such as Ryatt, Dyatt, Platt, Pyall, etc. In my experience, it is only in more recent generations that I can find someone whose name is spelled consistently throughout their life (at least the records which they left behind). I am still not sure if John preferred (or even knew how) to spell his name PIATT or PYEATT as both versions are used extensively with others thrown in to confuse the issue. Good luck, Marianne On Mon, 28 May 2001 23:03:13 -0600, PIATT-L@rootsweb.com wrote: > Posted on: PIATT Queries > Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/surnames/p/i/PIATT/queries/10021 > > Surname: Piatt, Pyatt > ------------------------- > > I was wondering if ayone else has found where the name Piatt had switched > to Pyatt? 2. Interesting about your listing of the spouses of Captain William Pyatt. I show that his first wife was Jemima Quick, b. 1757, daughter of Col. Abraham Quick and Machtel Veghte. Show three other children born to this couple, Tunis, Reynier and Henry. The info I have is that Col. Quick and second wife Charity had seven children. Unfortunately, I did not make note of my source for this information. However, I have never seen a listing for a Jacomynje Quick. Pete Keefer

Posted on: PIATT Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/surnames/p/i/PIATT/queries/10025 Surname: Piatt ------------------------- There is good documentation that William Piatt's last wife was Sarah Shotwell, m. 14 Sept 1778. My quandary is - was he previously married to both a Jemina Quick & a Jacomyntje Quick? The websites all interchange these 2 women as to birth, marriage & death dates, even parentage. I believe Jemina's parents were Abraham Quick & Matilda Wyckoff and Jacomyntje's parents were Abraham Quick & Maghtel Veghte. These two Abraham Quicks were first cousins. Any clarification would really be appreciated.

There are ocassional variations, but this list is as accurate as I can make out. There are some PIOT(T) families, but they come from Scotland (Clan GRAHAM).We may be related to them, way back in time, but we have no proof handy. The Scottish PIOT/PYOT are said to descended from the Picts (Piocht-Gaelic for Pict, evolved to PIOT, PYOT, PYAT) in Scotland, recorded in 14th Century, Inverness. I don't know what the French PIAT is derived from.I'd be pleased to hear any suggestions. Let's work on it. . .

    3. Posted on: PIATT Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/surnames/p/i/PIATT/queries/10022 Surname: Pyeatte ------------------------- We had a round on the Pyeatte list a while back of all the different spellings and pronunciations of the name. I'm sure there are those out there who know much more about the origins and changes in the name. I just always like to point out, don't discount someone as a possible relative due to differences in spelling. Many of our ancestors were not literate, many census takers (clergy, public servants, etc.) were barely literate, from what I've seen, spelling was much less standardized a century or two ago - phoenetics were OK-by-them. What a wonderful world of diversity we have....:) I would search for as many variations as you can. If you're looking for specific search options, many sites use soundex (of course you'll get a whole lot more than you bargained for there), and most sites have options for one or more letters not defined (check out that site's help section); such as P*t*. Think of it as fun. Good luck. Pyeatte to Piat to Pyat, etc

    2. Laverne, I'm not sure who this John H. Piatt is. I have three John H. Piatt's in my family file but none of them match this death date. I would still think it is very likely that he does come from the Scioto/Adams Co. Ohio Piatt's because of the name. The record indicates VA. Is this where he is buried? 3. For Anita, Canton is in Stark Co OH, almost a twin city with Akron OH which is in Summit Co OH. Hamilton Co OH contains Cincinnati. Your better bet for finding Piatts in 1828 would be in Hamilton Co, rather than in Canton. Something might have gotten changed in the retelling over the years. A map I have shows 11 locations for Five Points, but only one Canton and one Canton Road, both in Stark Co. But someone can double check on those maps sites online to see if there might be something in or near Hamilton Co. -- Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH

    2. Laverne Piatt
    3. For David C I believe that "Piatt Digest" would refer to one form of e-mails from the PIATT-L list at Rootsweb.com. I am on the LIST form of the list so I get e-mails from the list as they come in to the list. However, a subscriber can subscribe in "digest" mode which means that e-mails are saved until there are a number of them and then that collection of e-mails is sent out as a "digest." Christine can correct me if I'm wrong. For those who are coming to conference I hope to have an e-mail ready for you in the next several days. I got a call from the college yesterday confirming details of our event and will get those details out to all of you who are signed up to attend soon. If you are coming, but don't get a private e-mail from me in a week, please let me know. Somehow, I got scheduled to work all weekend at my "fun" job. The upside is that there are only ten days left this year in my "real" job. Hurry summer. -- Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH

    2. Hi, All, << Dinah PYATT was Jonathan MARTIN's third wife,... >> Again, I'm quoting from Louise MARTIN MOHLER's book - prob more than you EVER wanted to know about MARTINs... but some ARE PIATT/ PYATT descendants, anyway. ;) "Jonathan MARTIN had three wives and 15 known children. He married his first wife about the time the new church was formed (in Middlesex Co NJ) and it was recorded as 1706. That wife was ELIZABETH DUNHAM, d/o the new pastor, Rev. Edmund and his wife Mary (BONHAM) DUNHAM. Elizabeth died four years later at the age of 21. In 1713 Jonathan married MARTHA RUNYON, d/o John & Ann Elizabeth (DUNN) RUNYON. She died 7 years later at age 27. In 1722 he married DINAH PYATT d/o Jacob & Mary (HULL) PYATT. Both tombstones for Dinah and Jonathan were unearthed in 1971-72 winter when digging up an old Nike missile at the old Hadley Airport. This airport is rather famous since that is where the American Air-Mail system had its beginning. The tombstones were eventually taken to the METLAR House, 1281 River Rd., Piscataway. Mrs. Cora Lee ROMANO was kind enough to me a beautiful rubbing of Jonathan's stone. It was her husband who rescued the stones on that winter day. It reads, 'In Memory of Jonathan MARTIN - Father of Jacob MARTIN Esq - who deceased July -- 1768 in the 82d year of his age.' Evidently, Jacob was the one who purchased the stone. It is a little amusing that as the father of 15 children, his son Jacob had his name on the monument. The stone for Dinah was the same design. A third stone for a young dtr. was also uncovered: (dtr) Dinah died at age 18 in 1794, d/o of Jacob." Children - 14 are named here: i. Mercy MARTIN b. 1707 m. Joseph SHOTWELL ii. Mary MARTIN 1707-1758 m. John SUTTON iii. Jonathan MARTIN, JR 1709-1780 m. 1732 Martha ___ iv.
