    1. [PIATT] Piatt- Benjamin & Allen
    2. I have had the following query in here before without success, so I thought that I would try again. I would like to find: 1. Town/city in which Benjamin Franklin Piatt was born in Iowa. Birth date: March 17, 1872. Parents: Allen Piatt and Elizabeth A. Rogers. 2. Benjamin's wife was Nettie M. Outhier. I would also like to find out in which city/town in Iowa Nettie was born. Born: April 6, 1879. Parents: Amile Outhier and Marion Morrison. 3. Allen Piatt and Elizabeth Rogers were married Nov. 27, 1862, supposedly in Illinois. Need to know the city and county. Thanks very much!! Jim Harriman

    2. Hi Laverne, Nancy Piatt Tosch here, feeling really sad that I cannot make the conference because I am heading up another family reunion on the 30th in Michigan, and I cannot juggle them both...so that this does not happen next year, do you have a clue as to when the conference will be held in 2002? Nancy

    3. I have spoken with the woman whose last name is Piette and convinced her to start her own research on her line--she has never attempted previously. Her father lives in Western Ontario and is one of 13 children. She knows there were at least the last 5 generations of Piette's in Canada and her family legend says that they immigrated directly from france (no stop in NJ first!) so we will see what we can find out. She also says she is pretty sure there was another spelling in previous generations and promises to find out what that was. Her mother was a Gerrard and has been researching that family for some time so maybe we can get some help from her as well. Robin PS for Laverne...Can we have the conference in the Virgin Islands next year *huge grin* Laverne Piatt wrote: > For Robin, > > Oh, by all means, make the acquaintance of the Canadian Piatts by any spelling > who are researching the name. 1. [PIATT] e-mails re: Piatt Researchers Conference 2001
    2. Laverne Piatt
    3. I'm sorry to take list space for this but I believe my original informational message to conference attendees that I sent on 28 May 2001 was not received by everyone attending the conference. This evening (Tuesday, 5 June 2001) I resent the original message and an additional informational message. If you are attending and did not get two messages from me this evening, please let me know privately. Do not respond to the list. Also, this is probably the last chance for anyone else to get in on the conference for this year. It's the 17th Piatt Researchers' Conference at Delaware Valley College, Doylestown PA. Rooms $20.00 per person, per night, double occupancy; $30.00 per person per night single occupancy. Breakfast, $3.00 per person through the cafeteria line. Attendees bring own pillows, linens, blankets, towels. The dorm is air-conditioned. If you find that you can attend, let me know by Friday, 8 June 2001. -- Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH

    3. For Amanda, Piatt Family Newsletter, Volume 6, 1991 gives 13 children for JOHN H PIATT and ELIZA JANE HAYSLIP: JOHN PIATT (s/o LEWIS PIATT & PRISCILLA NEWMAN) Civil War Veteran b 1 Sep 1831, Jefferson two, Adams Co OH; d 29 Jul 1909, Scioto Co OH m c 1850, Adams Co OH to ELIZA JANE HAYSLIP (d/o ___ & ___) b c 1836; d ____ 1. ARMOR, b 14 Aug 1875, Adams Co OH, d after 1898; m 27 Feb 1895, Scioto Co OH, Ida Florence Cook ***** PFN has no further information on any of the 13 children. Since so many of the children listed above were listed as dying after 1898, I would suspect that some of the information above was taken from an 1898 obituary which listed these particular children as survivors. Whose obituary that could have been is not known and is not published in PFN. If not an obituary, some record must have existed which listed these children as being alive in 1898. The 1830, 1850 and 1860 census records show a JOHN H PIATT as living in Scioto Co OH in Niles twp (1830 and 1860) and Union twp (1850). In 1840 he was in Tiffin Twp, Adams Co OH. This JOHN H PIATT was an uncle to the JOHN listed above who married Eliza Jane Hayslip. An account of the murder of the two Piatt brothers above states that the murder "shocked the people of Rocky Fork, on the line between Adams and Scioto Counties." Also, the article states that the crime was committed "less than a hundred yards over the Scioto County line." Certainly, the Scioto Co Piatts and the Adams Co Piatts were connected but further research is needed to demonstrate those connections. -- Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH

And in addition to all the variations in spelling that Marianne posted last Friday, I've also seen Byat Piette and, just today, in NJ militia records Ephraim Phyatt, listed just before two Pyatts. I hope that I can remember when researching Rene' Piatt/Pyatt in NJ shortly to check also Renepiat, and LaFluer. -- Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH

    1. [PIATT] Elise Jourdan of 4/08/2001
    2. Hi Elise, This family is not in the Daniel Piatt line of NJ and KY. I too corresponded with Robert Alexander Piatt starting back in 1985. The best I could learn was that John, born 1782-83, married Hanah. They had a son John married to IBBA BROOKS. John and Ibba were the parents of John C. Piatt, born 1861. John C. Piatt died May 27, 1930. Hope this helps. Dick

    2. Sharolynn Pyeatt
    3. Could someone please give me some additional information regarding the conference? Is there a planned schedule? Do we spend time doing collective research-- or do we just share what information we already have? Would I need to make a deposit for lodging at the college? If so, to whom would I pay? Also, has a time and place been decided upon for next year's conference? It's getting to be "fish or cut bait" time for me to make a decision about whether to attend. Thanks for the information? 1. [PIATT] Scoliosis
    2. Robin Pyatt Bellamy
    3. Just read Don Koch's note, and although these Piatts dont seem to be anywhere near my line my eye caught the part about severe scoliosis. Am wondering if anyone else suffers that...Mine was severe enough at age 10 to require surgery and two metal rods. I know that scoliosis runs in familiesm so I was curious as to any other 'cousins' who might also have it. Robin in Canada

    1. [PIATT] A note of interest
    2. Don Koch
    3. Hi Piatt List Last year, I sent some old Family photos of my great grandfather Harry B. Piatt (son of Michael H Piatt and Eliza D. Kirk) and his wife Rose Barth Piatt to my half brother in California. He in turn sent me some notes that his daughter, my grandmother Beatrice "Trix" Piatt Koch had sent to her son (my father) in January 30, 1975, two years before he passed away. It is interesting and may provide some clarity for some of the lineage comments at PFN 5:28. Trix's handwriting was darn near indecipherable and have been so over the years that I corresponded with her. This past week, I decided that it was time to take a serious attempt at deciphering her notes to my father. Considering that she was 89 years old when she wrote these notes to my father and pretty much crippled up with severe scoliosis I was pleasantly surprised to find that most of the notes were indeed decipherable. Below is the text of those notes with my comments in brackets. Don Piatt Koch Transcription of written notes of Beatrice ìTrixî Piatt Koch dated Thursday, 30 January 1975 written to son Piatt Koch. I particularly like these notes because it provides so many clues. A regular goldmine. I will jot down things as they come to me. Altho maybe not in correct sequence. Things about my fathers & mothers families. My Paternal grandfather, Dr. Harry M. Piatt [This is the Michael H. Piatt referenced at PFN 5:28] - 3918 N. 9th St., St. Louis, Mo. Veteranarian. Grandmother, Elizabeth. I do not know Maiden name. [It was Kirk] They died in 1895 & are buried in Bellefontain Cemetary, St. Louis. Separate lot from son Harry B. The grandchildren [s/b children] as I remember hearing: Mrs. Wally McLeod [Mary L. Piatt, daughter of Michael H. Piatt and Eliza D. Kirk] Mrs. Belle Butler [Belle P. Piatt, daughter of Michael H. Piatt and Eliza D. Kirk] Mrs. Joseph Guilfoyle (youngest girl) [I suspect that this is Elizabeth Piatt who is not the youngest. It also helps to explain the Guilfoyle names in the line at PFN 5:28, as husband and son of a married daughter who is probably deceased at the time of Eliza D. Piattís probate. It would also indicate that Harry Lee Guilfoyle is Michael H. Piattís grandson.] Harry B. Piatt Buried in the Piatt Lot in Bellefontain. (illegible) - My mother & father Harry B. (Barras) Piatt ? Rose B. (Barth) Piatt. My maternal grandmother ? Louisa M. Goodall 1902- [appears to refer to year of death] Son August Barth died 1901 - Grandma G [Goodall/Barth, maiden name not known yet] was married twice - & lost 7 children & husband in 2 years. She was a remarkable woman & beautiful. An early day pioneer, she moved West after having a boarding house in Memphis. She followed the ìStickesî with her Rooming & Boarding Houses. Made her own living til she died in July 1902. In her 70ís & was then running a nice little hotel in Red Cliff, Colo. The Quartzite Hotel. Happiest memories of my childhood were spent there. Beautiful town of 3(illegible) . Your Dadís family [refers to Augustus Koch]. Honey, maybe you know more than I do. Uncle Richard & Aunt Cecilia Bartholdt [nee Nieduer] - he was a Representative in Congress [from St. Louis] for 24 years when he retired. Eugenia Nieduer - sister of Mrs. B [Bartholdt] was Mr. Bís [Bartholdt] Sec. They called her Genie. Sister Agnes called Nessel - I really loved her. Brother Walter died in 1914. He developed Melancholia after he had to testify against his best friend - Bank Embezzlement - & the man was convicted. Bro. Barney died also. Do not know date. Genie I know died after your Dad. [Dad refers to Augustus Koch who died in 1936] The family spoiled him so much & he was lazy, Very talented, he could have been a very funny comedian. Maybe I didnít understand him & I guess he should have followed his talents. Gus Kochís [Augustus Koch] family: I have to start with Richard Bartholdt - head of the Clan. Came to the U.S. when he was 11. Was a U.S. Representative for 24 years from St. Louis. I know he lived in So. St. Louis & that the family & Anheusers & Busches were all good friends. He married Cecilia Nieduer. Aunt Cilli they called her. One child (Lay) died in infancy. The Nieduers & Uncle R [Richard Bartholdt] all lived together, in a very large house. Bís [Bartholdtís] had their suite of rooms. They all ate together, Breakfast - coffee - sort of Kaffee Klatch - supper (illegible) table. Eugenia Nieduer - sister of Mrs. B.[Bartholdt] The congressmanís Sec & very capable. Then there was Agnes Nieduer - single - lovely looking but cared nothing about dress. I loved her very much. Cong. B [Richard Bartholdt] & Aunt Nessel [Agnes Nieduer] died a day or so apart, early 1930ís. They moved to W. St. Louis which is where I knew them. A brother Walter Nieduer died in 1914. He was a U.S. Bank Examiner & had to testify against a best friend charged with embezzlement. The man went to the Penitentiary and W. [Walter Nieduer] lost his mind over it. Another brother Barney collapsed and died on the street. (No date) Then there was Jane Nieduer. I never knew her. And Gusís [Augustus Koch] mother - (Nance?) Married to Mr. K [Koch] when he was a newspaper man. Died at his desk. Gus was adopted when he was a week or less old by Mrs. K - immediately after Mr. Kís [Koch] death. She passed away in the spring of 1910. Gus of course stayed with the families until he was sent to Santa Fe for health reasons, TB. Worked for the R.R.& then State Capitol. He was large. 190 lbs., 5í11 1/2î. Looked the picture of health although always with red cheeks. (sign) He died in 1936. Buried in Arlington National Cemetary. He was very talented. Fine voice. Had artistic talent. My only talent was music. The piano. Never had a lesson in my life, but could read music like you read a book. And so was able to earn my living with it. Picture shows - dances - etc. When we were divorced [July 10 1916] I went to work for the St. Louis Post Dispatch - Pulitzer paper - 7 years [1916 -1923] . 4 years at the Nashville Banner, Nashville Tenn.[1924-1928]. 1931 - Highway Dept. New Mexico Highway Dept - Over 20 years.

    2. Last fall I took a trip to Scioto Co. Ohio with my Mom to visit some of the family cemeteries and do some research. While I was there I found some Piatt's that I am not sure where they belong on the tree. Can someone help? 1.) Clarice B. Piatt, b.Feb 17, 1914; d. Jan 10,1974. buried at the Swords/Mershon Cemetery on Pond Creek Rd. 2) Mabel Piatt 1903-1908. Found on the Piatt plot at the Swords/Mershon cemetery on Pond Creek Rd. 3.) Myrtle G. Piatt 10/6/1897 - 7/1/1996 Swords/Mershon 4.) John H. Piatt (1869-1938) and wife Jane M. 1874-1961 Swords/Mershon Pond Creek. 5.) Virgil L. Piatt 1909-1994 & Hazel M. 1911-1986. I think this was also Swords/Mershon but could have been Friendship. 6.) stone reads "Francis, wife of John H. Piatt April 25,1873 - Nov 11, 1901 She was the sunshine of our home". Who was this and what John H. was it. Was it the same John H. mentioned in #4? Does anyone know if the Piatt's had any connections to the Swords or Mershons or if they just lived near eachother? Is there anyone else on the list who has any Atkins (Ohio) connections? And finally does anyone on the list live in Scioto Co, Ohio? Thanks for everyone's help, Amanda Kemen Cincinnati, OH

I had suspected that Jemima and Jacomyntje might be one and the same. I do not have enough information on the Quicks to verify this information. The Shotwells are one of my direct lines, however, and you are correct about the Shotwell information. In fact, Sarah was married three times, William Piatt being her second husband. Pete Keefer

    1. [PIATT] Introduction
    2. Don Koch
    3. I am Don Piatt Koch and I am a newcomer to this ancestor research so my learning curve has been going a bit crazy. Laverne Ingram Piatt has been of tremendous help and I have ordered and received a set of the PFN to keep me from reinventing too much of the wheel. My line as I have it now is as follows (dates are in many cases ca): Rene Piat (1652-1705) & Elizabeth Sheffield (1656-----) Jacob Piatt (1678-1750) & Mary Hull (1681-17--) John Piatt (1712-1760) & Frances VanVliet (1713-1776) Abraham Piatt (1745-1791) & Annabelle Andrew (1748-1822) Abraham Piatt (1776-1829) & Jane Hageman (17---18--) Michael H Piatt (1816-1895) & Eliza D. Kirk (1817-1895) Harry B. Piatt (1850-1936) & Rosa Barth (1856-1925) Augustus Koch (18---1936) & Beatrice "Trix" Koch (1886-1984) Piatt Koch (1913-1977) & Margueritte Simon (1918-1998) (my parents) Don Piatt Koch (1939-I am still here) & Mie Nakano(1948 happily she is still here) I am particularly interested in finding out more on Harry B. Piatt & Rosa Barth and their 5 daughters. Trix we know a bit about since she was my grandmother. Her sisters were Josephine, Augusta, Louise, and Hazel and all were born in St. Louis, MO. We are trying to find out if any of the sisters had offspring and what became of them. Then I expect to step back a generation and look some more. I am trying to find documentation on all of them and stories if they exist. Some of the data about the sisters in PFN 5:38 appears to be a bit off. I surmise that this is probably due to information found in the will of Harry B. Piatt. The will was probated in 1936 but written years earlier. Because of this the specific information about places of residence of the sisters in 1936 may be off a bit. For example, in 1936, Trix is shown as residing in Nashvill, TN but in reality had been working for the New Mexico Department of Highways in Santa Fe, NM for 5 years. She did spend 4 years working for the Nashville Banner newspaper in Nashville, TN from about 1923 to about 1927. More about Trix in a separate Email. As for the other sisters, the info I have shows: 1. Josephine "Jo" Piatt, b. Mar. 1878, St.Louis, MO., m. J. B. Wood. (1936 reside in Santa Fe, NM??) 2. Augusta "Gus" Piatt, b. Jul 1880, St. Louis, MO., m. Lee C. Daves. (1936 resive in Albuquerque, NM??) 3. Louisa "Lou" Piatt, b. Feb 28, 1882, St. Louis. MO., m. William F. Brogan, d. Oct 1970. (1936 SanAntonio TX) children: Louise Brogan Mary Carmel Brogan 4. Beatrice "Trix" Piatt, b. Jan 3, 1886, St. Louis. MO., m. Dec 6, 1912, Augustus Koch, d. 1984. children: Piatt Koch, b 1913, m1 Margueritte Simon, m2 Gwen ?, d. 1977. 5. Hazel Piatt, b. Feb. 1892, St. Louis, MO., m. George P. Emerson, d.?. (1936 reside in Baltimore, MD??) I am fascinated by the depth of research that has already been done and how helpful others doing this kind of research are. The search is addictive. Like a bunch of part time (well some seem full time) detectives digging up pieces and sharing them. Fun stuff. I am on the road a great deal of the time. I live in Alaska but work for the state of Delaware, so I have a mean commute. Recently I have been doing a job in Frederick MD. On the way there I stopped at an antique co-op in Westminister MD and found a book that turned out to be of Piatt interest. I went back later and bought the book. The book is titled “Washington, The Man and The Mason” by Charles Callahan. The book was printed in 1913 by the Press of National Publishing Company, Inc. It was published under the auspices of the Memorial Temple Committee of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial Association. In the book on page 267 there is a reference to a meeting of the Morristown American Union Lodge on December 27, 1779. The listing of those present include Washington and among others a “Brother Piatt.” No indication of a first name is given but Laverne suspects it may have been Daniel. She is already hot on the trail and has attempted to contact the Association to see if any additional documentation can be found at that source. Seems the meeting may have been directed at making Lafayette an honorary member. The lists also notes that “Arnold (the Traitor)” attended. Fun stuff. At any rate, I hope to be a participant in this exercise and it certainly gives me something interesting to do when I am on the road and in off working hours. I am also trying to locate a copy of "The Tribe of Jacob" so far without success. Any one know of an available copy? Cheers, Don Piatt Koch
