For those of you who may not have used this site before, once you find your ancestor, be sure to do a search on the legal description (twp, range, section, etc.) to see who the neighbors were. I have found family that I didn't even know lived in a certain county where I was looking for someone else. In a few cases, they came to the state together and purchased land and then moved on before the big census years. This is certainly one of my 'standard' sites! Its great to be back home after a month of travel in Switzerland (daughter lives in Baden) and other interesting places. When I left on June 19th I thought I had sent out ALL the orders for Hagy's thesis, Castle's Woods-Frontier Virginia Settlement 1766-1799. If I failed to respond to an e-mail or misplaced an order please contact me so I can resolve any outstanding situations. I hope those of you who received a copy enjoyed it and any feedback would be appreciated. This document is important for many of us with southwest Virgina ancestry and I am happy to provide it to interested researchers. Probably the best book for Augusta County/Rockbridge County research is Tinkling Spring, Headwaters of Freedom by Howard McKnight Wilson first published in 1954 with a single reprint in the mid 1970's. I would love to be able to provide this resource to you but unfortunately it is copywrited. Here is the good news!! Yesterday I received an e-mail from Pastor Fred at the church and he told me that the Session met to discuss my request for permission to reproduce the book for fellow genealogists (that request was denied) BUT they have decided to reprint the book. I will keep everyone advised on this project and highly recommend the purchase of this book as soon as it becomes available. There is an early landowners map in the back of the book which shows where everyone on the Beverly patent lived and it is amazing how many of those families ended up next to each other in southwest Virginia and east Tennessee. I think you can get a copy of the map through the Rockbridge county Historical Society for under $10.00. As you can see, we are working our way back in time from Castle's Woods to Augusta/Rockbridge County (1740's-1750's) and it is my desire to provide a link to Ulster which might provide the necessary clues to make the family connections between the Ulster/Virginia families that many of us originate from. The best resource I have found is a pair of obscure books written in the early 1900's by the Reverend Alexander Lecky titled, "In the Early Days of the Laggan Presbytery" and its companion book, "The Laggan and Its Presbyterianism." Lecky has compiled much quality information on the Presbyterian families that lived in the fertile, low-lying area around Derry/Donegal that was referred to as the Laggan in early times. This data is organized by Parish and includes hundreds and hundreds of family names that are a mirror of the names found in Augusta/Rockbridge County just a generation later. Since the names are by Parish and townlands it makes sense to study the allied families so for example if you see the following: Taboyn now Monreagh Matthew Lindsay, John Aikine, Alexander Houston, Robert Cowan, Archibald Alexander, Robert Scott, Wm, Mackie, Wm. Bell, John Kilgour, James Moore, John Graham, John Gay, Richard Armstrong, and others Parish of Raphoe Robert Anderson, Patrick Bell, Alexander Stuart, William Ramsay, Robert Walker, Robert Gray, John McClure, and others This information is extensive and gives us an interesting picture of the arrangement of families kind of like the early land owners map of Augusta/Rockbridge county. These books are a must if you are searching for a connection between Ulster and early Virgina. They are not copywrited and I can make copies for interested researchers. There are 211 pages of serious material. Contact me privately if you want me to make you a copy. Regards, Robert Cowan ==== COWAN Mailing List ==== Please do not send attachments of any kind to the list. Announce what you have to share, and ask listmembers to contact you directly if they wish to receive a copy. --25039080.995985300514.JavaMail.imail.sammy--

After checking with Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana, we know that the 1930 Census will available to researchers there in June of 2002. The Genealogy Department will definitely be open, but may or may not be located at its present site due to planned library expansion. Plans are going forward for having the 2002 Piatt Researchers Conference in Fort Wayne. More later, Ken, Jo, & Beth Lauer

I have just received in the mail the marriage certificate for Allen Piatt and Elizabeth A. Rogers (Nov. 27, 1862)**,. They were married in Henry Co.,Ill., rather than in Rock Island Co., IL. Allen - born Nov. 17, 1826, parents: Jacob Piatt and Jane Thompson. Elizabeth - born April 27, 1841, parents: Elijah Rogers and Nancy Beach. Thanks to Lynn Whitson Risner for putting me onto the correct county, thus enabling me to obtain the marriage record!! **Illinois Statewide Marriage index online. Vol/page 00A/0104. License No. 01862197. Thanks Lynn!!!! Jim Harriman I am still looking for the following information and thought that I would put in on the Digest again: Information regarding Benjamin Franklin Piatt and Nettie M. Outhier. Benjamin - b. March 17, 1872, somewhere in Iowa. Parents: Allen Piatt and Elizabeth Rogers. Benjamin died in Fresno, CA. Nettie: b. April 6, 1879, somewhere in Iowa. Parents: Amile Outhier and Marion Morrison.*** Nettie died in Fresno, CA. I would like to know the counties in Iowa where Benjamin and Nettie were born, as well as where they were married - probably in Iowa. As suggested by Lynn, I am looking at Dallas Co. in Iowa for the possible birthplace of Benjamin, as Allen Piatt appears there in the 1870 Iowa census. Have not been successful so far. ***I was able to obtain the death certificates for Amile Outhier and Marion Morrison - again, thanks to Lynn Whitson Risner. Thanks much!! Jim Harriman
JEMIMA QUICK was the first wife of Capt. WILLIAM PIATT (1743-1791). They were married in Somerset Co NJ on 27 Jun 1774, with the marriage license dated 24 Jun 1774. JEMIMA was the daughter of Col ABRAHAM QUICK, of Ten Mile Run NJ, and MACHTEL VEGHTE. JEMIMA and JACOMYNTJE were one in the same person. Old Dutch records were often written in what sounds like a dialect when read aloud. The only son of JEMIMA and WILLIAM was a JOHN who was baptised 12 April 1778 at the Six Mile Run Church in Somerset Co NJ. (WILLIAM had 4 other children by his second wife SARAH SHOTWELL.) To all interested parties of this line, this is the data that I presented at the PIATT CONFERENCE June 24-30, 2001. We all know the data on William and Hannah (Tindall) Piatt excepting possibly that some do not know that Hannah was the daughter of Joseph and Phebe (Hendrickson) Tindall. Hannah Tindall had a sister Anne Tindall married to Richard Bray. Joseph Tindall died early 1831 and I feel that William and Hannah Piatt probably moved shortly thereafter from NJ to PA. The Tindalls were staunch Methodists, donating land in 1830 for a school house and a religious society for Christian worship. To my knowledge this building is still standing today. I had obtained a couple of letters written by Rita Piatt O'Brien back in the 1940s, a granddaughter of Nathaniel Piatt. She was researching the Piatt line. Rita died in 1958 in Ft. Wayne, IN. I gave this name to Cecil C. Piatt in 1978 in hopes that he could learn of the location of her possible collection if they existed. He was able to learn and review her papers but without finding any additional data that would mention the possible parents of William Piatt. Later, I was able to locate a letter dated 2/1/1934 from a Miss Lulu I. M. Thompson of 340 E. 1st. St., Upper Flat, Fon du Lac, Wisconsin. She stated she was the aunt of Rita Piatt O'Brien and that she had the line down to William's grandfather and they were searching for the two missing generations. But, in the letters of a much later date by Rita O'Brien it appears they were still searching for the parents of William. It appears that Nathaniel Piatt had 13 children but to my knowledge only 8 are known, so therefore if the others lived to maturity, it is possible research could locate some of these other children. It is important that in the Bible of William Piatt, born 1792, it is stated that he was born at the base of the Jenny Jump Mountain near Hackettstown, NJ. Now we come to Benjamin and Hannah (Bowlby) Piatt. Benjamin was born ca1762 and died between 11/18/1823 and 8/23/1826. Hannah, his wife, was born 5/10/1765 and died 3/30/1842, the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Dunn) Bowlby and the granddaughter of John and Mary Bowlby. Much has been printed on the Bowlby family. I know that Benjamin and Hannah Piatt had children: Mary probably born ca1785, Anna probably born ca1790, James probably born ca1795, Samuel probably born ca1800, and Sarah born ca1805. This family lived at the base of the Jenny Jump Mountain near Hackettstown, NJ. In all my research since 1962, I only find this one family in that area. This was even west of where Jacob Piatt (one of the five Revolutionary brothers) had lived, this being the gentleman that moved to Boone Co., KY. Two others that surely fit into this picture is Benjamin Piatt, born 1783 and David born 1797, the one married to Hannah Jackson. I mention these two because this Benjamin (1783) moved earlier to Columbia County, PA. This was the same area that my ancestor, Philip Piatt, had gone to before. When William and Hannah (Tindall) Piatt moved from NJ to Pa ca1829 and David and Hannah (Jackson) Piatt moved they also went to this same exact area in PA. It appears more then a coincidence, they went to see their family. Per William Piatt's Bible he stated this was where he was from in NJ, the only piece of evidence we have to my knowledge that places him in the same exact location as Benjamin and Hannah (Bowlby) Piatt. The first names David and Joseph are in the Bowlby line. Neighbors to Benjamin and Hannah Piatt were Bray, Tindall, Johnston and others. William and Hannah Piatt even name a daughter Euphemia Johnston Piatt. Euphemia is also in the Bowlby line and this is not a common name. When Richard and Anne (Tindall) Bray moved on, they even sold their property to Benjamin and Hannah (Bowlby) Piatt. The Bray name was also used in the William and Hannah (Tindall) family. Some other factors figure in with this family. When Hannah (Bowlby) Piatt's father died in 1823 he left a sizable estate of property and daughter Hannah received a one-sixth part. Either Hannah's husband Benjamin was ill at this point or it created some friction in the family or Benjamin and Hannah decided they had to do something to prevent all their sons from moving westward, because Benjamin made an indenture 11/18/1823 releasing all the one-sixth part of his wife's inheritance to his two sons, James and Samuel, for his care and all the clothing he may need for life. On 8/23/1826 widow Hannah files a mortgage lien against the two sons and immediately sells a piece of the inherited property. Therefore, we now know that Benjamin Piatt had to die between these two dates. Sons Samuel and James evidently also wanted to move on and probably did so as there is no more mention of them in mother Hannah's life. By 1836, widow Hannah had moved back to New Hampton, NJ. Another piece of evidence was the store lists of indebtedness in the estate of Henry Dusenberry, near New Hampton in April 1792. Two persons owing debts to the Dusenberry estate were Benjamin Piatt and Benjamin Piatt Jr. This gives me reason to believe that the father of Benjamin married to Hannah Bowlby, may have been Benjamin Piatt Sr. I have spent a great deal of time in researching this line because I felt and still feel, this family was very closely connected to my ancestor Philip Piatt. Now, as we (the conference group) get closer to the research years of early to mid 1700s, we must research the Dunn, Drake, Hull, Stelle and other families that were closely connected to the RENE PIATT children and grandchildren, to produce Piatt names that are not in the indexes under Piatt. Possibly someone would like to research the Miss Lulu Thompson papers, if they exist. I welcome any corrections or thoughts others may have on this line. Richard O. Piatt, PA.
I am looking for information about Lewis Peatt or his ancestors. I know that he was born in Westchester Co., NY in 1810 and came to McHenry County, IL in the 1840s. He married Margaret Whiston in 1852 in Racine, WI. I have found the names of several other Peatts in Westchester, but I have no idea if they are related to Lewis Peatt. Hi Jim! According to the 1870 Census Index for Iowa ot Ancestry.com, there is a listing for the following: Piatt, Allen 1870 Dallas County IA on page 540 in Colfax Township If Allen Piatt, was your Benjamin's father, this might be where you would need to look to find birth info. It at least bears looking at. :) Lynn Whitson Risner In a message dated 6/7/01 11:09:41 AM Pacific Daylight Time, JRH89088@aol.com writes: << 1.
