For Carolyn in the deep south, Well, there is plenty of variance in the birthdate given for the person who might be JOHN NELSON PIATT: "about 1855," 26 Sep 1850, and 1846. Do you have any census records for him with his wife and children? Census records might help narrow the possibilities. In my husband's line there is incorrect information on a death certificate (a Piatt) and an incorrect date on a tombstone (not a Piatt, imagine that). Where is JOHN NELSON PIATT buried? And where did he live in OH? You might also post the ten children of JOHN NELSON PIATT and TACY JANE to the list. At one time there were descendants of WILLIAM PIATT and PRECIOUS KEENE/ELLA BROWN on the list and one of them might spot something familiar. -- Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH
Thank you Laverne for your response regarding William Piatt and John Nelson Piatt. I have compared the information to what few documents I have and my husband's sketchy recall. John Nelson Piatt's death certificate lists his date of birth as September 26, 1850. Information provided by one of his sons. John's tombstone lists his birth as 1846. There is a GAR marker at John's gravesite. John Nelson and Tacey Jane (she used her middle name) had 10 children. First child William (Bill) J. born May 1880 in WV. All other children were born in Ohio. Child 5: Thomas Lester named his first daughter "Ella". This is bout clear as med to me. Thanks for any help. I am going to continue looking. Carolyn in the deep south
For all the French speaking Piatt-Pyatt-Pyeatt researchers out there, there are two web pages I know about that may give a possible clue. They are: <www.geneactes.org/> <migranet.geneactes.org/> Lots of luck. Dick Piatt, PA.
It's so very rare to find brand new information on Piatts that I have to say that I'm quite pleased at running across these tidbits, no matter how small, Wednesday at the Ohio Genalogical Society. OGS has a bound photocopy from microfilm of the record the original of which is housed at the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus in their manuscript collection. Sturges Family Papers, Mss539, Box 1, Folder 15 Sherwood and Sturges Daybook, October 1815-July 1817, Mansfield OH The records found in the daybook of this early store in Mansfield are believed to pertain to Thomas Piatt, b 1767, Path Valley PA, d 1850 Grant Co IN and to his son John, b 1800, Belmont Co OH, 1867, Grant Co PA. Thomas Piatt married Catherine Bell daughter of Robert Bell who founded Bellville in the southern part of Richland Co OH. For a time between 1812 and 1820, Thomas Piatt was an owner of land on (present day) Linn Road north of Mansfield. The photocopy, made from microfilm of the original, does not enhance the handwriting which was already difficult to read. The best interpretation is a follows. The entries: p 108 1 June 1816, Thomas Piatt, [unreadable], 4 [...] 10 oz butter 59 [cents] [ditto] [ditto] 1 oz snuff scotch 4 [cents] p 115 10 June 1816, John Piatt, due on [unreadable] 24 [cents] p 122 22 June 1816 John Piatt pr cotton socks 75 [cents] [ditto] [ditto] [unreadable] 25 [cents] Most notable is the additional entry indicating that a famous Richland County resident, visited the store just a few weeks before: p 100 18 May 1816 John Chapman or as some say Appleseed 2 (plugs?) tobacco 1.00 The librarian at OGS told me that this record is the only one known to be in existance that was made about Johnny Appleseed, by that name, while he was living. Do you suppose that the Piatts and Johnny........? -- Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH

I have a 1900 census record for John Piatt in Scioto Co. Union Township Ohio. He is listed as being 31 years old and b. in Feb of 1869 in Ohio. It also lists that he had been married for 11 years and had 5 children (5 of which were alive). His wife is listed as being Mary b. Apr 1872, in Ohio, age 28. Children listed are: Annie b. Jan 1892, Homer b. Sept 1894, Katie b. May 1896, Mrytle b. Sept 1898 and Nellie b. May 1900. Their neighbors are Thomas Piatt & Millie Ann Boldman (from the Lewis Sr. John H. line) and on the other side Thomas's daughter Lavina who was married to George Atkins. I would think that they are also from the Lewis Sr., John H. line since they are in Scioto and taking the neighbors into account but I cannot match them up. At one time I thought the above family was that of John Richard Piatt who was married to Mary Elizabeth Simpson but that is not so because I found them in Adams Co for the same year... John R. Piatt b. Feb 1862 in Ohio, married 19 years, 3 children (3 alive). Wife listed as Elizabeth b. April 1862 in Ohio. Children: William C. b. June 1882; Anna B. Born Feb 1884; and James O. I am still making an effort to try and locate my aunt. She was taken away from Flint, Michigan in 1922 by her father Fred Piatt. He also took my grandmother's younger sister Zelma. I do not know a lot about Fred except that he was born in Pa in 1881, the son of Cyrus and Oneita Piatt. He had two siblings Laura and James. His mother died and his father remarried. His father and step-mother lived in Midland, Mi. and are both buried there. My aunt would be 82 years old if she is still living. I am not sure my aunt was ever told the truth about being abducted by her father and aunt. If any one knows anything about this situation, I would sure appreciate hearing from you. There is something in me that doesn't allow me to give up. Sincerely, Linda Owens
For Anita, Sometimes I think we might as well play "Pin the Piatts on the Map." This blindfolded game might work as well as anything else. And the repetition of names throughout the various lines helps nothing but confusion. I don't think that ELIZABETH HANNAH PIATT ARMFIELD had any connection to the Piatts of Monroe Co OH other than to be quite a distant cousin that they didn't know. I looked in my e-files and found a posting from way back in 2002 that I'd like to include at the end here. My SPECULATION is that ELIXABETH HANNAH PIATT's family originated in New Jersey, migrated to Virginia and also that part of Virginia that is now West Virginia (Augusta, Rockbridge, Rockingham areas and Hampshire and Mineral in WV), to Ohio (Stark, Franklin, Knox, Seneca Co) and on to IN. We know that the family of the younger MOSES PIATT and wife ELIZABETH PARKER did move from Seneca Co OH to northern IN. In addition, since the original posting of the clip below, the name of MARTIN SMITH has been found in militia records for Hunterdon Co NJ during Revolutionary times. As mentioned in the clip below, if we could find a sale of land in Ohio by a MOSES and JANE PIATT we would be back on the trail of these people. Discussion of this speculation is welcome. We've got to keep digging. <<Congratulations to Anita and her relatives for obtaining and posting the information about ELIZABETH HANNAH PIATT ARMFIELD which gave Hannah's parents as MOSES PIATT and JANE SMITH of Virginia. This would make a second PIATT/SMITH connection in Virginia, the other being the marriage of WILLIAM PEATT [sic] and MARY SMITH on 17 Nov 1814 in Augusta Co VA. The marriage record gives MARY SMITH as the daughter of MARTIN SMITH. It would be an understatement to say that we have to wonder if these two sets of people were closely related. It might help to begin looking at Smith families in Virginia and New Jersey. I notice that HANNAH's birthplace is given as Canton, Stark Co OH, 1828. Although that is possible, by 1830 two MOSES PIATTs were listed in the census records as living in different places: 1830, Franklin Co OH, Truro Twp (near Port Columbus airport) Moses Piatt 1 male 50-60 2 males 20-30 1 female 40-50 2 females 15-20 1 female 10-15 2 females 5-10 1 female under 5 neighbors were George W Calp and William McComb (could this be a three generational family?) 1830, Seneca Co OH, Adams Twp Moses Pyatt [sic] (appears in one index as Moses Ryatt) 1 male 20-30 1 male 10-15 1 male under 5 1 female 20-30 1 female 10-15 neighbors were Jacob Whiteman, John Petticord, and John Elder It would appear that the Seneca Co OH MOSES PYATT would not be the family of Hannah's parents. There is no 2 year old female. I believe a county history refers to this family as that of MOSES and ELIZABETH PARKER PIATT later of northern Indiana. Deed records of Seneca Co show that all of the sales made by this Moses were with a wife Elizabeth. If we could find a deed record of MOSES and JANE or JANE PIATT selling land in Franklin Co OH we would have reasonable proof that the 1830 Franklin Co family is the right one to be the family of HANNAH. If anyone has access to Ancestry.com's databases or another such source, could you make a quick check to see if any land records are available for Stark or Franklin Co OH? I don't believe birth records were kept anywhere in Ohio until 1867 so that avenue of research for Hannah's birth is out.>> -- Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH

Hi again list...You know after reading the last newsletter listed below from Laverne, I feel my missing unplaceable Elizabeth HANNAH Piatt, whose parents are susposed to be Moses and Jane? She born in Ohio and parents from WV.?as per family memories given to me from a found cousin in WI., may have belonged to this first family of children.? Hannah as the name she went by, was born 1828.,in Hamilton co. Ohio. JUST maybe some day a newby in genealogy will come aboard and have the missing key! Does anyone on this list live in this area? Be willing in their Spare! time to look at any public records to see if they can find any info on my 3rd grt grandmother? I would be very thankfull to compensate you for your work. Anita For Carolyn in the deep south: (Sorry it's taken me this long to work backwards in my e-mail to your posting to the PIATT-L list last November 2. Here's the lineage up to WILLIAM PIATT and ELLA [PRECIOUS] (MARY?) KEENE, then we run into a snag: .Rene Piatt and Elizabeth Sheffield (NJ) ..Jacob Piatt and Mary Hull (NJ, PA) ...Jacob Piatt and Jean Paul (PA) ....Jacob Piatt and Elizabeth Dunham (Washington Co PA) .....James Piatt Sr and Nancy Coleman (Monroe Co OH) ......James Piatt Jr and Catherine Moffett (Monroe Co OH) .......William Piatt and Mary Keene (Monroe Co OH) [was she also known as Precious and/or Ella?] William's family is really confused because his first wife died while there were several young children. Those young children apparently were sent to live with others. William then married a widow, Hannah Ferrel Dixon, who had three children of her own. Only the Dixon children and the children William had with Hannah lived with him afterward as far as I can tell. To complicate matters, the birth date for William and Ella [Precious] (Mary) Keene Piatt's son John is "about 1855." He is also listed as John H rather than John N. This John did marry a Jane and was living with her in Green District, Wetzel Co WV in 1880 with their son Harry aged 1 month. Is this a match for your John Nelson Piatt? If so you fit right in with these Monroe Co Piatts listed in David Eckert's posting of November 3. [Source: Piatt Family Newsletter, Volume 9, 1994] -- Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH
Hi Richard! Sorry for the delayed response. I forwarded your query to my Mom; she's getting in touch with Dad's sisters, the three that live in Charleston. As I understand it, they are planning another reunion. The one I was referring to took place in Georgetown, S.C., last summer. There are a great many Pyatts in that area, and that's where my branch of the family originates; my Granddad was born there at any rate. I'll have to check with Dad and my Aunts to get the details. As I mentioned before, I wasn't able to attend (same day as annual family reunion on Mom's side of the family: one state and several hundred miles north), but I'll find out what I can. Open question that maybe someone on the list can shed light on: my Granddad (Rudolph Sr.) was the youngest son in that branch of the family. I'm trying to track down info on his grandfather. My ggrand was Charles James Pyatt. I'm trying to find out if his dad was Henry. Thanks, and I'll be in touch, Rudy Pyatt "Seeing the Sights From Brooklyn Heights!"
