For those who love old cemeteries, there is a wonderful book-"Philadelphia Graveyards and Cemeteries" by Thomas H. Keels. Lots of photos and information, present and past. The decline of so many of the cemeteries is largely due to lack of money, families moving out of the area and the subsequent lack of interest. I believe there has been a significant rise in the last 15-20 years concerning preservation. This has been achieved mostly through the efforts of volunteers. Examples are Fair Hill Burying Ground, Laurel Hill (which is not only listed with the National Trust but is also a National Landmark-the first cemetery to be included in the list) and Montgomery Cemetery in Norristown. There are also new laws in place concerning removal and re-interment. All the remains were supposed to have been moved, but when they were preparing for the implosion of said project in 1999, human remains and bit of coffins were STILL being found. I love old cemeteries, but stories like that make me glad I've left implicit instructions that I am to be cremated after my demise.
