Almost all of my predecessors came to Phila. from Baden, Bavaria and Hesse, Germany, in the period 1840-1890 and settled in the area from Second St. west to Broad and from Walnut St. north to Girard Avenue. I would like to get suggestions of a good book(s) with descriptions of what the Port of Entry and the City of Phila. in general, was like and what was going on, during that time period. Also a source of good photos would be helpful. I'm out of town so direct access to Phila. repositories is a challenge. Thanks for any suggestions, Bill

**************************************
AOL now offers free email to everyone. Find out more about what's free from AOL at http://www.aol.com.
Bill, My gggrandparents immigrated in 1852, also from Hesse. Interestingly, they arrived at New York Port. Somehow they were able to travel to the Hazelton area where they settled and farmed. Their ship manifest listing was found at the NARA in New York City. I have alsways wondered how they found Hazelton. I assume their sponsor was from there. Still hunting. Good luck.
