Jim, No fee was charged/collected to be listed in the Phila. City Directories. To be listed you had to be employed or a head of household (employed or not). Neither age nor gender were a criterion. I believe that widows were listed as such for only one or two years after their husband's death, after which they were listed (as long as they remained head of household or employed) without the notation "wid.
