Let's keep it that way -----Original Message----- From: philly-roots-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:philly-roots-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of JYoung6180@aol.com Sent: Tuesday, March 20, 2007 2:39 PM To: philly-roots@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Phly-Rts] Terminology + phone calls vs letters. ADMIN In a message dated 3/20/2007 1:29:08 PM Eastern Standard Time, organizr01@aol.com writes: As others have pointed out, terms like "drunk," "bastard," "Negro" were acceptable in the past, but are no longer acceptable. In fact, they are hurtful. It's isn't about being "politically" correct. It's about not hurting people's feelings--today. Let's not. --- Further to the above comment... If you are quoting an historical document or specific text or name: Such as: "US Colored Troops," or "bastardy bonds" for example -- this is fine--use the terminology that is included in the record and don't try to change it. Where a problem could enter the picture is if you were to add any personal judgmental comments or make fun of or ridicule based upon the historical terminology. That would be where the line would be drawn in list messages. Remember that facts don't make judgments.
