Gene is right. There are several cemeteries that have a research fee, mostly about $25. The logic seems to be that they are not paid to do genealogy research. (Perhaps they are right, but my logic is that if we weren't interested in honoring the dead, they wouldn't have jobs.) The manager of Mt. Moriah personally went to my family's lot to confirm that there were not any headstones on it--for free--and also gave me quite a bit of information about old cemeteries, including Mt. Moriah. All in all, I have had tremendous luck with cemeteries providing info by phone, mostly without a fee. I have been able to get instant information in the vast majority of cases, rather than write for info then wait for a response. Others I just sent a request with a self-addressed stamped envelope and I got the info back quickly. Interesting theory. I believe that Ivy Hill had or has hired a person to do genealogical searches. Ivy Hill doesn't charge a fee. Many of the other cemeteries state that the staff is not there for such research but for the other functions of the cemetery so that genealogical searches are not part of the job descriptions. Greenwood was run by volunteers and charged in order to pay the utilities. The status of Greenwood is still uncertain. Gene Stackhouse --- organizr01@aol.com wrote: > Gene is right.
