Margaret REGER Crout & William CROUT, both born and died in Germantown, are very much a work in progress. So far it seems that all Crouts living in Germantown are somehow connected, it's the "how" that I'm working through now. William b. 1831 seems to be a son, though his death record is too early to name parents, and his obit in the Philadelphia Inquirer does not name parents or any other family members. This is the one person I'm most interested in but is the hardest to place with parents. Margaret b. 1833 is a daughter according to her death certificate; she and William have been together in the 1850 and 1870 census reports. Neither indicates relationship to the head of household. She is, in 1880, named as a sister to John J (below). John J. b. c1822 is a son to Marg REGER & Wm CROUT per Marg's death notice; he is a brother to Marg CROUT per the 1880 census and an uncle to a daughter of Joseph CROUT b. c1820. It would seem that Joseph CROUT b. c1820 is also a son to Marg REGER & Wm CROUT as his son Marcius B. CROUT, b. 1842-d. 1866), is named as grandson to Marg REGER Crout as well as son of Ann (nee unknown) & Joseph CROUT in death notices; his daughter Margaret B. (b. 1852, d. 1865) is named as granddaughter to Wm CROUT. Also, a daughter of Joseph & Ann, Ann/Hannah Jack by marriage, is named a niece to John J. CROUT. I suspect that there is Rebecca who married William C. JOHNSTON (cannot find death notices or census on them beyond 1850), a Caroline who is in the 1850 census but then disappears. My goal was to use siblings or suspected siblings to try to learn more about William (that has worked for me with others who were rather elusive to trace), and in the process I've become intrigued with all of them as well as with Germantown history. Other than the Civil War Pension file, which should show me Wm CROUT b. 1832's marriage information, what other sources would anyone recommend I now look into? And Gene, would GHS be interested in the chart showing relationships (which indicates sources as well)? GHS is one of my planned visits for this family, but I've honestly no idea how much I will find, and I'd like to dot all the i's and cross all the t's so that all is well documented. I have looked up all Crouts in the 1820-1860 cemetery returns, most if not all in the census reports for 1820-1930, as many as I can find in the death indexes from 1860-1915 as well as using the Philadelphia Inquirer. I've looked up most marriage applications to date from 1885-1916. Anything else that I'm missing besides births (which I've put off to the last as they are toughest as so many aren't recorded and those records can be mighty hard to read)? --------------------------------- Don't get soaked. The Society, and I, are interested in the Crout genealogy. My main interest is the CIvil War connections but the Society wants all the genealogical information possible. Gene Stackhouse I hate global warming.
