Hi. This is a quest for my GG Grandparents, William Lee and Sarah nee Turner. William was b. c1801 in Yorkshire, England, and immigrated to Philadelphia c1817. He married a Philadelphia lass, Sarah Turner (b. c1806), and went into the woolen mills in nearby Germantown. They eventually migrated to Centre County, PA, settling in Hublersburg until he d. 1870. Sarah lived on in Centre County until >1880. My reckoning is that the marriage was c1827, probably in a Protestant church. The first Census in which I can identify them is 1850, by which time they were in Centre County. I do not know when or where or even if he became naturalized. Although I am a Pennsylvania native (Cambria County), I know little of the Philadelphia area and so come to this List and respectfully ask for help on how I might next proceed to find a record of the marriage, any naturalization, or any trace of either William or Sarah in Philadelphia/Germantown. I also ask whether any Lister already has William and/or Sarah in their family tree. A search of the List Archives on Rootsweb produced no mention of either. Regards, Cecil Townsend Vienna, Virginia
Cecil, I just checked the Germantown Historical Society (GHS) site, and it lists both surnames. Perhaps this is worth checking into; they offer a research-by-mail option. I've no idea what information you might find or even if these are "your" Lee & Turner families that are documented. Here's the link: http://www.germantownhistory.org/families.html . My list of items to research there is growing in leaps and bounds, and indexes like these are what I always look for in historical societies. Have you searched the indexes of Genealogical Society of PA and Historical Society of PA? Sometimes a name will turn up with various references, and like GHS, if you are unable to visit, there are research-by-mail options. Wctx@aol.com wrote: Hi.
