On Jan 1, 1946 Emil H. Scheutz killed his 4 children and then himself in Philadelphia. He was married to Margaret Eppler. Would anyone know if he was related to the Emil H. Schuetz who married Mae Hinamen 1912 in Orange NY and lived in Manchester CT? Thanks. Bob Foran - CT

Bob, The Springfield Union paper of 7/71959 has a short item: 'Miss Victoria Schuetz of Hartford has requested police assistance in locating a brother's widow, Mrs. Margaret Schuetz. She told police Mr. and Mrs. Emil H. Schuetz lived in Greenfield in the late 1930s when they moved to Pittsfield. They returned to Greenfield in 1946, she said.' Story on Jan 4 1946 says wife visiting Greenfield at time of slaying. Headline says, 'Former Greenfield Father Slays Self and Four Children.' However, this front page story is continued on p. 16 but I cannot find p. 16. Went through page by page, Genealogy Bank says there are 8 pages, but some of their page numbers don't match the actual ones in the paper. But I think this is enough to conclude that they are probably the same Emil H. Schuetz. Whether or not it is the the Emil who married in 1912 I don't know but the Phila. one had connections to Mass. But Hartford must surely be the one in CT. Liane

There is this family in 1920 Hartford with a daughter Victoria [who was searching for deceased brother's wife]: Emil Schuetz 31 May Schuetz 29 Minnie Schuetz 6 Harold Schuetz 4 [4 1/12] Victoria Schuetz 2 [2 2/12] Leslie Schuetz 0 1942 WWII draft registration may solve the puzzle: Emil Henry Schuetz, 1851 N. 12th St., Phila. 53, b 1 Oct 1888 in Manchester, CT. Next of kin was Henry Schuetz, 403 Center St, Manchester, worked for Heath's Nurseries of Manchester. This data matches the father. On the WWI draft registration he was an insurance guy for Prudential. An Emil Henry Schuetz died in Texas in 1959. Liane

Bob, I found an article from the Cumberland Evening Times dated January 4, 1946 that has the story on page 1 and continued on page 10. I also think that there is a connection. What caught my eye is this sentence - "In one of his notes, Scheutz, a Philadelphia representative of Manchester, Conn. tree nurseries firm..." Last thing, a Binghamton newspaper [found via Yahoo] says that in 1946 Emil H. Schuetz was 57 years old and balding. So he was the man born 1888. The deaths took place in North Philadelphia. In 1930 he is still married to May and in Hartford aged 41. At some point May either dies or they divorce and he marries his second wife and moves to Philadelphia. And starts a new family. The 1941 census is due out in April and should be revealing since in 1946 he had a 12 year old son with Margaret. Sad story. Liane
