    3. You might want to check GoogleBooks to see what you can find there for free. Quite a bit about Philadelphia and right now vol 2 of Scharf's history is available. Also see Watson's Annals of Philadelphia which is an interesting read - parts are quite fascinating when he includes recollections about the weather in the early 1800s. Cold summers, and so forth. Internet Archive and others would have similar. There is a reprint of Watson that you can buy - the print on demand is $27 whereas the Cornell U. scanned version is $39 on Amazon. Alibris and Abe Books [and other used book retailers] would also have a nice selection. Both are good, I work in a library and we sometimes buy from Alibris if needed. Liane Fenimore

    3. Hi, Have you looked at who was listed above and below him on the passenger list? Some times younger boys, not necessarily orphans, were put in the care of an aunt or uncle or other relative to go to the 'new world'. You could then do a search on their names which might be more complete ie with more clues. Presume you have done the usual searches on family search, Ifhf, Rootsweb. As well often just because the passenger got on at Londonderry did not mean they came from there..Donegal, Antrim, Tyrone residents also embarked from there. Children's names can also give a few clues. Cathy On 5 October 2011 02:56, smdc <smdc20@verizon.net> wrote: > Searching for info on the parents of Oliver *Wright* 1835-1917. 3. Seemingly from Fannie Bockius Fitzgerald Stockham (traveling with Adele Annie Kite Sockham), to Adele Kite Stockham Ayres (and Edward Clifford Ayres Sr): Sunday Evening June 23, 1912 My Beloved Children— Arrived here at five thirty, after a forty five mile motor trip, there are eleven in our party all quite agreeable – one lame woman an sister from Uniontown, Pa. I wished for you both at Glingariff, where the bay was so fine – the row boats in plenty on its blue waters, some yachts and a few motors. We worshiped in such a pretty Episcopalian church, at the same hour I hope you and Adele were doing the same in another world. After we visited the rectors garden – a bower of great beauty filled with every conceivable flower, hardy and otherwise under the sun. The fushias in Ireland grow like trees – are used as hedges and are one luxuary of bloom – only the one color red. I neve[r] knew Ireland in the south was so mountainous. On our trip to Killarney we traveled for miles on the edge of mountains overlooking the finest natural valley I ever beheld. We left Cork county on the top of a great mountain and entered Kerry [C]ounty through a tunnel of natural rock. Stop[p]ed at an Irish peasants hut and found milk post cards, ginger ale, ect, ect, for sale. The Mother of six or seven barefoot children invited us in with genuine hospitality – the floor was hard earth – one room – a peat fire cooking the pot on a hook and Pat sitting in the corner smoking his pipe. He informed us he did not like his country very much, after we had raved over its great beauty. He also informed us they had three rooms up stairs or windows above. The big sty and stable were bang up against the house. We will not see this place – Killarney – till tomorrow – I only saw five or six Pomeranians pure white, and one pure black on the grounds of this hotel, which by the way is considered very fine in this county. We are in a very large park – the dining room overlooking the lake, which lyes at the foot of Purple Mountain. Everything is English and has the flag flying – The poor Irish have their necks under the yoke, yet they tell us everywhere things are so improved for them the past five years. I only wish you and my dear boy could see the life of the common people – happy they seem and content with life – so maybe the simple life is best after all. I’ve had to halt some – a performance right in the drawing room here on the hard wood floor, by six little girls and one boy from the Convent of the Sisters of Mercy – dancing singing of Irish song and Irish jigging one man taking part. How is that for Sunday evening – here they seem to think nothing of it. We thought it scandalous, but politely remained and dropped our shilling on the plate. We are well – we stay here two days and will drive in the morning to see the beauties of this famous Killarney. The lake proper is two miles and a half wide. Dear, I have written only to you since landing, because we have very little time for writing, are on the go most of the time, and when we get in have to dress a little for dinner. We are taken about in the very finest manner, and everything so far is agreeable. As we stay two days here, I have your pictures out in my dear little room. The first night we have not been together Aunt Dell and I. We are continually with some of the people who crossed on Cedric with us. Some are in their own autos. Others are hiring them at $40 per day for trip. The Biddles of Phila are touring Europe in their Packard. They also came over in ship with us. Aunt Adele is talking to Mr. Dixon – she thinks him pretty nice, I like him well enough. Am so anxious to hear from home. Write often and send letters on pretty well ahead. I think of you both so much and wish you were along. Regards to everyone and lots of love to you and Ed. Loyally Mother Aunt Dell sends love.

    3. Vince, There was a ship called Cedric that sailed 1903-1932 for White Star. A rather large ship: Passengers: 365 first, 160 second, 2,350 third. Wikipedia has a colorized postcard of it. But they may have gone over on one ship and returned on the other so their names might not be on the Cedric for incoming passengers. She was in and out of NYC in 1912 and 1914, then she was converted to a troop ship. Stevemorse.org has the list. Liane
