    3. Miriam, First, find the entries for the Soundex code of the last name you're researching. Within that Soundex code, the entries are alphabetical by first name, so scroll / click through until you find the right first name, then look for entries that have the right combo of first and last name (including variants -- don't get hung up on spelling). The contents of the various columns vary over time, so be sure to read the intro pages that explain how to interpret the entries during each block of time. HTH Claire K. Death indices can be made public 50 years after the death. As a further explanation, the years 1906-1919 are alphabetical, 1920-1924 use the Russell Soundex code, 1925-1929 are alphabetical, 1930-1951 use the Russell Soundex Code 1952-1961 are alphabetical. On the black on white pages, the Soundex code is the column with the letter followed by the 3 digit number. On the white on black pages, the Soundex code appears in the first column. For rules/directions on how to determine the Soundex code see: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soundex> There is also a PA birth Indices page, but only 1906 is posted, as births cannot be made public until 105 years after the year of birth. 3. I just got off the phone with someone at Ancestry. They have a FAQ intheir help area. Click on Help (upper right corner) and search on 1940census or search on "5453" to get FAQ 5453 which has the key questions. Two key things: The 1940 census and index will be free through the end of 2013. They expect to have the name index online within a month. Please relay this info to your other lists if appropriate. 3. Hi, I am helping out with some transcribing and the census sheets we are working from do not always have the houses listed sequentially. A lot of them do but other sheets I have done will have house say 1556, then 0601/2/3 then 1557, 1558. Just as and when the enumerator could get to them. Also keep looking at the DB as I guess new records will be coming on frequently as transcribers do them.)
