A researcher commented: < His marriage to Sarah is announced in 1897. Assuming they married when they were around 20 (??), perhaps he (or she) was born around 1877.> The median age of first marriage has varied quite a bit over the years. Most of us today think the normal median age of marriage for men is 19-20 and for women is 18-19 because that was the experience of the years 1940-1970. Those young marriages were also typical a century earlier, but in the intervening period, marriages were much later. A median marriage at the turn of the 20th century might have involved a 23-year old woman and a 26-year old man, and those averages stayed high through the roaring 20s and the depression. Of course, this is just a statistic. Every statistic includes both conformers and outliers. Knowing where the midpoint on the bell-shaped curve might fall tells us nothing about where a particular ancestor might be; it only tells us where our chances are best. I am looking for details of the birth of William HUGHES, son of Hugh HUGHES (Born in Llandudno, North Wales) and Amelia HUGHES some time between 1875-1878 in PA. I can't be sure that the birth took place in Philadelphia, but it was certainly in Pennsylvania. The family came over in c1872 boarding in Liverpool on "The Egypt" to New York. A few years after William was born they moved to Colorado. Hugh had a brother Richard HUGHES and a sister Elizabeth HUGHES. Any connections or pointers/tips to his birth, baptism or other evidence of the family being in a particular part of PA would be gratefully recieved. Torn down in 1951 to building a housing project. All the remains were supposed to have been moved, but when they were preparing for the implosion of said project in 1999, human remains and bit of coffins were STILL being found. I love old cemeteries, but stories like that make me glad I've left implicit instructions that I am to be cremated after my demise. Terry C
Thanks Nancie......Guess it will have to be the City Archives! grrrh! Anyone going there that can lookup Hannah for where buried? It must be in Phila, not in her native home area. 5/26/1885 BUZZARD - On the 22d inst., Hannah Buzzard, in her ninety-first year. The relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from the residence of her daughter, no. 1909 Vine street, this afternoon, at 2 o'clock Couldn't find John. You can write to the city archives and ask for the death return on Hannah to find where she is buried. Nancie Thanks Diana in AL
Thanks Larry. Chester County - interesting. She lived in Philly and her husband was buried there. I wonder why the family buried her in Chester Co unless her side of the family is from there or they had a family plot there. Would be nice to be able to get a burial plot listing from that cemetery. Forgot to mention the obit is from 1915. If you can get hold of the book "Old Churches and Meeting Houses In and Around Philadelphia" by John T. Faris, there is a whole chapter devoted to this church. It was located in Tredyffrin Twp in Chester Co. I would assume that the burying ground is adjacent to the church. Larry B. ----Original Message Follows---- The obit of Clara M.
