    1. Re: [Phly-Rts] West Phil. Cubs 1921 baseball team
    2. Mary Finley
    3. I was born and raised in West Philadelphia and 60th St. was then and is now considered West Phila. (Cobbs Creek neighborhood now...West End then). I would be very surprised if any records exist for a "West Philadelphia Cubs" base ball team other than what Patti found....a short tally of a game's results. I can tell Patti what it was like in my era (1938-1960) and surely before that. 60th St. was the business district. Lots of little storefronts with families living behind and above their shops. By the 1920's and probably before that a great many stores were run by hardworking Jewish families. Our baker, tailor, shoemaker, etc. were all Jewish. The shoemaker would come out from his living room directly behind the shop to wait on you. I can still remember the wonderful aromas from the Jewish Deli. We Catholic kids had wonderful hot bagels long before they became readily avaiable and "hot"! I hope this isn't too far off topic! 3. Hi Patti, I'd guess it was not a school team, as they played the "Strawbridge & Clothier Juniors" (S&C being a department store, so either they were sponsored by S&C or they were employed there). My guess, based purely on that, would be that yours was a neighborhood team (hence the name "West Philadelphia Cubs") for young adults (assuming they'd be matched age-wise against a "junior" team). But maybe someone from West Philadelphia will have actual knowledge of this... Claire K. On Feb 11, 2007, at 8:16 PM, P Valverde wrote: > Hi, > How can I find out about this baseball team? 2. Diana Quinones
    3. Hi Dianne, you asked: "Do you know where/when her daughter and son-in-law died? Maybe they're in the same cemetery?" No... I don't for Thornton BARNES. Thornton was alive in 1890 per Phila City Directory. In 1890 Phila City Directory: Name: Barnes, Thornton Profession: grocer Address: 241 N Water, h 1909 Vine Hannah had died 5/1885, and Lucinda who was born 10/1817, died in 2/21/1895, per your subsequent email (which I appreciate!): No Headline (Mortuary Notice) Date: 1895-02-24; Paper: The Philadelphia Inquirer Page 13. "BARNES - On Feb. 21, 1895, Lucinda, wife of the late Thornton Barnes. In the 77th year of her age. The relatives and friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from her late residence 1909 Vine Street,on Monday, February 25th at 2 P.M. Interment at Mount Peace. Kindly omit flowers." Found this on Interment.net for Mount Peace: Mount Peace Cemetery - (records maintained by Lawnview Cemetery, 500 Huntingdon Pike, Rockledge, PA 19046) 3111 Lehigh Ave Philadelphia, PA 19132 (215) 379-1600 Looks like Thornton died before Lucinda. Maybe his death was between 1890 and 1895? Would it be too much to ask for his notice? THANK YOU, Dianne..........great find and help! I will call there to see if any BUZZARDs, and Thornton BARNES. 3. The best way I can think of to narrow your search is to see if the family is in the Philadelphia city directories at the time of the birth. This isn't foolproof, for I have ancestors who I know were in Philadelphia but at times didn't make it into the directory, but it's still a great resource. If you locate them in Philly during the birth years, the next thing to check would be the birth index for those years. Have you searched the Philly records online yet? There are several sites with transcribed records online. Also, if you've not yet done so, a search on www.familysearch.org might be helpful. One other way to go about this is to obtain the death record of William HUGHES if you know that date and place, for it might provide birth details. Cemetery records are also an option if you know where he was buried. MarkHughesuk@aol.com wrote: I am looking for details of the birth of William HUGHES, son of Hugh HUGHES and Amelia HUGHES some time between 1875-1878 in PA. I can't be sure that the birth took place in Philadelphia, but it was certainly in Pennsylvania. ... Any connections or pointers/tips to his birth, baptism or other evidence of the family being in a particular part of PA would be gratefully recieved. --------------------------------- Sucker-punch spam with award-winning protection. 1. Re: [Phly-Rts] Free promotion that might interest Philadelphia researchers--ADMIN
    2. I sort of hesitate to post info about some free offer or other (even when I know that it can be helpful to many subscribers) because it invariably starts a rash of "I can't get in" or "I can get in" and "the link/password/login doesn't work for me" responses. If you CAN get in and use the information--wonderful! If you CANNOT get into the site -- try later -- especially at off hours (free promotions such as this one tend to clog up and slow down normally functional servers) or try disabling or lowering your security settings on your browser to see if that might be the problem with accessing the site. And remember that this promotion is only in effect til Tues. So don't expect it to work after the offer has ended. There isn't anything those of us on the list can do to help you access this or any other website. You would need to contact the webmaster of the site for additional help. Joan, admin
