    1. Re: [Phly-Rts] Cemetery fees
    2. Eugene Stackhouse
    3. Cemetery fees differ in Philadelphia. Ivy Hill and Laurel Hill have no fees for research. Some years ago, West Laurel Hill charged me $35 for information on a family plot. Thirty-seven years ago, before genealogy became so popular, Mount Moriah charged me $35 for research. Greenmount charges $100. I worked for a while as a volunteer at Greenwood, K of P, and we charged $15 or $20. The Hood Cemetery in Germantown charges $25 through the Germantown Historical Society. 3. It's a fair question, and with a long history of working for/volunteering for non-profits, I have learned that non-profit is often misunderstood as free. It is ok for non-profits to charge for services if that is the concern here. The term can be misleading. On a related note, I'm often teased by my family as being the only person they know of who socializes at and makes friends at cemeteries <grin>. During these visits, I've learned that (1) genealogists are often the cause of groans by staffs due to the lists they take in with an expectation of an immediate response -- and I'm not saying this is what you did but giving a general bit of info, (2) many cemeteries are barely able to afford to maintain the grounds due to finances as generations of families and plot owners die off, and (3) many don't have records at the cemetery and therefore they aren't easily accessible. I've been surprised at the number of cemeteries barely hanging on, and they tend to be run by/cared for by volunteers in the community who band together as "friends of..." groups. In a nutshell, even one lookup, simple as it seems and is, can take time by an already often-too-small staff or volunteer group; additionally, in meeting so many people, I've learned that those cemeteries with free offers often have a genealogist or historian involved who've persuaded the board that it's a good idea to keep allowing those lookups. My hope is that the many that do give the free lookups will continue to do, though if they do begin to charge (a couple have mentioned that this might happen), I hope it remains reasonable. $45 per lookup has been mentioned on the Philly lists and recently someone mentioned $100; I was billed for $200 for one because the cemetery decided I should be the new plot owner since they knew I was living and had an address for me! Yikes! I hope you get the info you need, and if you decide to obtain the report, would you be so kind as to post what sort of report the cemetery provides for this fee? 1. Re: [Phly-Rts] Mount Peace and Lawnview Cemeteries
    2. Hi.. I have ancestors buried all over the Phila. area. Some cemeteries charge for information and some don't. I was particularly disturbed when I called Greenmount and was told that they wanted $100!! I had a burial date and was pretty irritated so the secy gave me some limited info over the phone anyway. I do have family buried at Mt. Peace, which I visit occasionally. While the cemetery is in an inner city location, it is well maintained. I have also had help from the folks at Lawnview. I don't think that their fee is unreasonable...especially if there is extensive searching required. They sent me very useful information. There is another area cemetery just outside of Philadelphia that is situated next to an "older part". They claim that this area does not belong to them and they have no records for it. Rumors persist that this isn't the case. They just don't want to be bothered looking because it will cost them time and energy. It is very frustrating!!! Since I pay fees for access to computer sites, historical societies, etc...I don't mind a reasonable one. In fact, I wish some of these cemeteries would realize that cooperating with descendants might help them out in the long run. I am disturbed if these places are unfriendly and unorganized...or if I get the feeling that they are out to bilk unsuspecting researchers. Just felt the need to "weigh in". Bev W

    3. I believe that all cemeteries are non-profit. Being non-profit does not preclude fees for service. 1. Re: [Phly-Rts] Vol 2, Issue 71 -- NJ Marriages

    3. In the late nineteenth century, PA had much stricter marriage laws than NJ. Women in PA had to have their parents' (read: father's) permission to marry until they were 21 (I believe). In NJ, age was only 16 or so. It was quite common for young couples to go across the river to be married, especially when parental permission was lacking or difficult to obtain (e.g. out of area, etc.). 3. That age requirement was still in effect in the late 1950's and early 1960's. Lots of people eloped to Elkton, MD. I had two aunts do that in the late 40's and mid 50's. By the way, when I married in 1964, in Florida, I needed my parents permission as I was 20 at the time. How times have changed. 3. A few days ago, a Mortuary notice in the Phila Inquirer newspaper for one of my kin showed she was buried in Mount Peace Cemetery. On the genweb archive board a phone number is given for contact, showing records are under Lawnview Cemetery. So today I called that number to find out if the mother and spouse were buried there. I was told to send a letter, no email, to their address in Rockledge PA with $20.00 and they would provide a genealogy report on the names. Is this customary for cemeteries in Phila area? I have never been asked for a letter and money for others in Chester and Berks Co. My experience in Berks and Chester has been an answer while on the phone! Or an email reply within a day....... 2. The 21-yr age requirement was still in effect in May 1926 when my mother and father went from PA to Elkton, MD to marry - - - Daddy was not 21 until the following March, Mother had just turned 21, so they switched ages for the record, but one still not old enough! Dori

    3. Good question. I have been hunting for the marriage location of my grandparents for many years. Only recently discovered it. Is a mystery to me since they were always Philadelphia people. She was age 18 and so may not have been at an "acceptable" age by her parents and so "eloped" to NJ.....just a guess. The website kindly provided by Larry B. gives all the info one needs to apply for a copy of a marriage license. No doubt my letter will be returned due to lack of including funds. I will reapply using the application available on the NJ website.
