Elaine ------ Elaine- At times it can be confusing because of the list setting being to REPLY TO LIST when you hit REPLY for a list post. I would just caution you and other list members that when you intend to send a "thank you" or other private response to a list message that you check the SEND TO box of your email before hitting the send button to be sure the reply is going where you intend it to go and not back to the list. That said, replies that include genealogical information--we always encourage those to be directed to the list--hence, the REPLY TO LIST setting. Thanks! Joan, admin PHILLY-ROOTS@rootsweb.com

    1. [Phly-Rts] WILLIAM LEE and SARAH TURNER
    2. Hi. This is a quest for my GG Grandparents, William Lee and Sarah nee Turner. William was b. c1801 in Yorkshire, England, and immigrated to Philadelphia c1817. He married a Philadelphia lass, Sarah Turner (b. c1806), and went into the woolen mills in nearby Germantown. They eventually migrated to Centre County, PA, settling in Hublersburg until he d. 1870. Sarah lived on in Centre County until >1880. My reckoning is that the marriage was c1827, probably in a Protestant church. The first Census in which I can identify them is 1850, by which time they were in Centre County. I do not know when or where or even if he became naturalized. Although I am a Pennsylvania native (Cambria County), I know little of the Philadelphia area and so come to this List and respectfully ask for help on how I might next proceed to find a record of the marriage, any naturalization, or any trace of either William or Sarah in Philadelphia/Germantown. I also ask whether any Lister already has William and/or Sarah in their family tree. A search of the List Archives on Rootsweb produced no mention of either. Regards, Cecil Townsend Vienna, Virginia

    1. Re: [Phly-Rts] WILLIAM LEE and SARAH TURNER
    2. larzemail
    3. Cecil, I just checked the Germantown Historical Society (GHS) site, and it lists both surnames. Perhaps this is worth checking into; they offer a research-by-mail option. I've no idea what information you might find or even if these are "your" Lee & Turner families that are documented. Here's the link: http://www.germantownhistory.org/families.html . My list of items to research there is growing in leaps and bounds, and indexes like these are what I always look for in historical societies. Have you searched the indexes of Genealogical Society of PA and Historical Society of PA? Sometimes a name will turn up with various references, and like GHS, if you are unable to visit, there are research-by-mail options. Wctx@aol.com wrote: Hi. 2. larzemail
    3. Margaret REGER Crout & William CROUT, both born and died in Germantown, are very much a work in progress. So far it seems that all Crouts living in Germantown are somehow connected, it's the "how" that I'm working through now. William b. 1831 seems to be a son, though his death record is too early to name parents, and his obit in the Philadelphia Inquirer does not name parents or any other family members. This is the one person I'm most interested in but is the hardest to place with parents. Margaret b. 1833 is a daughter according to her death certificate; she and William have been together in the 1850 and 1870 census reports. Neither indicates relationship to the head of household. She is, in 1880, named as a sister to John J (below). John J. b. c1822 is a son to Marg REGER & Wm CROUT per Marg's death notice; he is a brother to Marg CROUT per the 1880 census and an uncle to a daughter of Joseph CROUT b. c1820. It would seem that Joseph CROUT b. c1820 is also a son to Marg REGER & Wm CROUT as his son Marcius B. CROUT, b. 1842-d. 1866), is named as grandson to Marg REGER Crout as well as son of Ann (nee unknown) & Joseph CROUT in death notices; his daughter Margaret B. (b. 1852, d. 1865) is named as granddaughter to Wm CROUT. Also, a daughter of Joseph & Ann, Ann/Hannah Jack by marriage, is named a niece to John J. CROUT. I suspect that there is Rebecca who married William C. JOHNSTON (cannot find death notices or census on them beyond 1850), a Caroline who is in the 1850 census but then disappears. My goal was to use siblings or suspected siblings to try to learn more about William (that has worked for me with others who were rather elusive to trace), and in the process I've become intrigued with all of them as well as with Germantown history. Other than the Civil War Pension file, which should show me Wm CROUT b. 1832's marriage information, what other sources would anyone recommend I now look into? And Gene, would GHS be interested in the chart showing relationships (which indicates sources as well)? GHS is one of my planned visits for this family, but I've honestly no idea how much I will find, and I'd like to dot all the i's and cross all the t's so that all is well documented. I have looked up all Crouts in the 1820-1860 cemetery returns, most if not all in the census reports for 1820-1930, as many as I can find in the death indexes from 1860-1915 as well as using the Philadelphia Inquirer. I've looked up most marriage applications to date from 1885-1916. Anything else that I'm missing besides births (which I've put off to the last as they are toughest as so many aren't recorded and those records can be mighty hard to read)? --------------------------------- Don't get soaked. 3. I have a death record for Margaret CROUT naming her parents as William CROUT born in Germantown and Margaret REGER born in Germantown. The REGER name is new to my research, but for Margaret REGER, I do have this much: born c1795 in Germantown, married (date unknown) to William CROUT, died 1879 in Germantown and is buried in Axe's / Upper Burial Ground. I will be visiting Germantown Historical Society, but I wonder if anyone else is researching this name. This seems to me to be a more challenging time frame to research, particulary as census reports woudn't put her and her parents together. --------------------------------- Get your own web address.
