    1. [Phly-Rts] Slightly off topic- riding stable from the late' 50's, early 60's
    2. J SCHWARTZ
    3. Hi everyone, In junior and senior high (Shaw/Bartram), I used to ride along Cobbs Creek paths from a stable that was off the left (south?) side of Marshall Road. Strickly speaking that is Upper Darby (I think). I vaguely remember that if you didn't have an in with the owner (like you proved to him you could ride), you had to ride on this gigantic mud flat that was down from but attached to his property. I think it's been built on now by a shopping center up there. The name Jimmy's and Weaver's have been bandied about, but I'm not sure if I'm mixing my stables. There was also a VERY old stable on the left (south?) side of Baltimore Ave, also just past Cobbs Creek Pkwy. I was in grade school in Illman Carter, attached to the U of Penn, at the time and my dad took the whole 3rd grade class for an outing there once. It had to be before I was in 5th grade, so something like early/mid 1950's. They just had a large field where I rode a pony around... I don't think you could access the trails on Cobbs Creek, or at least at my tender age, the issue didn't come up. I gave my mother heart failure anyway by taking the pony over a tiny little jump. FYI Prices for an hour's riding in the first stable was, I believe $1.50. The number $5.00/hr sticks in my mind too, but that may have been by the time I switched to Pennypack stables, [grumpu] Al's riding stables in the northeast. I rode every Saturday. Great horses. Also flashers in Pennypack park. Was very glad I was riding an ex race horse at the time<g>. Thanks for any suggestions. I've been curious what these stables were names for years. One moved to the western suburbs at some time... possibly Media, but am not sure. Answer off list since I doubt this has any general interest. jo -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 3. Andy , I happen to have a fountain pen and mechanical set - I believe to be a Schaeffer with this name . The only thing that I can tell you about it is that when my husbands sister went into a nursing home many years ago . This was among some of her things. I know she often spoke of a Mrs. Muschert but that is all I know . I am a widow of 87 years of age been doing geneaology for many years. and just came acrosss your letter . kaytg@comcast.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andy Andrelczyk" <czyk25@comcast.net> To: <philly-roots@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 22, 2007 3:13 PM Subject: Re: [Phly-Rts] Inquiry > Kay, > > I have a Charles J. You show that Margaret Allison immigrated ~1897 to join sister Elizabeth Skene. I see a Keith Skene and wife Elizabeth (b. Nov 1868, Ireland) living at 5366 Magnolia in the 1900 census. In 1899, a "Miss M Allison" arrived in Phila on the ship Belgenland from Liverpool and she was going to meet her sister Mrs ? ( it's 5 letters that look like Slane but I'm sure it could be Skene) at 5366 Ross St. Someone on the list may know if Magnolia used to be Ross St. Miss M Allison reported that she had been in the US before,in Phila 3 years? In 1900 census, there was a Margureite Allison (b. Dec 1876, Ire ) working as a servent at 6026 Germantown Ave which I think was not too far from the Magnolia address. It's possible that Margt was a servant at first but later got training as a nurse. You mentioned the 1912 passenger list that shows Margaret coming to the US. Did you find the 2nd page where she reports that she has been to the US before in the last 17 years, between 1895 and 1912 ? And also she reports a sister, Sarah Anderson, of Belfast ? 1. [Phly-Rts] Searching for Margaret Allison
    2. Susan Abramson
    3. Dear PhillyRoots List: I’m seeking some direction/suggestions regarding an illusive ancestor on which I have the following information: Margaret Allison Born: 1875/1877 in Rathmullen, County Donegal, Ireland Immigrated: To Philadelphia in 1897 where she joined her family, which included her sister, Elizabeth Allison Skene. Profession: “Trained Nurse” Various Family Papers: Suggest that she was associated with “the hospital on Stenton Avenue,” Frankford Hospital, and/or The Kensington Hospital for Women. 1920 Census: Listed as living on West Gorgas Lane in Germantown. She is single here and and still working as a “Trained Nurse.” Family Lore: Says that she married late in life to a man with the last name of Lindsey (Lindsay?), but I have nothing to support this idea. What I’ve done so far: Scoured Ancestry.com where the only concrete match is the 1920 Census mentioned above. There are several others, variously under Allison, Lindsey (Lindsay) that are long-shots at best. Also, I have found a "ships passenger list" for 22 October 1912, which I know is correct. What I’d like to know is: Where can I go to find nursing staff records for Philadelphia hospitals? Are there records out there for Philadelphia nurse associations between 1910-1940? In the "Naturalized or Alien" column for the 1920 census, it notes “Pa.” Does this mean Pennsylvania? “Pa” doesn’t really answer the question as to whether she was naturalized or an alien. How should I go about finding immigration records? Since she listed 1897 as the year she immigrated on the 1920 Census, does this record mean that she did some traveling back and forth? Is there a place where you can find records for ships from Philadelphia to Ireland between 1897 and 1912? Why is she not listed on the Censuses of 1900 and 1910? Is there some avenue of research that I am overlooking? I'd very much appreciate any suggestions you may have. Thanks in advance. Susan A.
