    1. [Phly-Rts] How to find books
    2. Lani
    3. --From another mailing list:-- There is an easy way to find books that are in libraries that have their catalogues linked online. This is most public libraries, many college libraries and some genealogical/historical society libraries. The site is WorldCat [OCLC)] http://www.worldcat.org/ Use the search engine to search for a specific title or author or subject. A search for William D. Bennett gave a list of books he had written. Click on the desired book title and it will give a list of libraries that hold that book. If you enter your zip code, it will even sort the libraries by distance from your home. For example: I searched on William D. Bennett and got 1629 hits for William Bennett even though I had specified the middle initial D. I refined the search specifically for William D. Bennett and got 37 hits--a manageable number. I chose "Orange County Records" and got a list of 72 libraries that hold that title, the nearest of which is 66 miles from my home. This has helped me find lots of books. I now keep a list of books and their locations. When I travel, I know what libraries I need to visit!! -- Good for inter-library loan requests too. It works for genealogy books.

    1. Re: [Phly-Rts] Philadelphia area marriages
    2. J SCHWARTZ
    3. Why point people to the City Hall Marriage License Bureau, where marriages cost upwards of $20 even in person, and significantly more if done via mail. All of the marriages that Jim is interested in can be researched at the City Archives and if found, printed for about $3.50 if done in person, or $10 if done mail order. The only caveat on mail ordering a search to the City Archives is for the 1891 and 1888 marriages: they can not print marriages in the range from 1885-1915; the Marriage License Bureau has a lock on those marriages and later for printing purposes. However you or your representative can do it on site at the City Archives. The LDs also has the films for Philadelphia marriage indexes and certificates or minister returns. The 1860 marriage may not be in the collection since that was the first year that the reporting rules started to be enforced, i'm told, but there's no harm looking. If you need a marriage prior to 1860, try the Public Ledger indexes first. If not listed, you'll need to find church records. 2. Vincent E. Summers
    3. Guys 'n gals... Leonard HACKING was the grandfather of my 1st cousin's husband, Harvey R. HACKING of New Jersey who died just a few days ago. Leonard came from Blackburn, England to Philadelphia circa 1899. His wife and child apparently followed shortly thereafter. His wife later took a trip via Ellis Island - in 1924. 1. Does anyone have any information on this HACKING line? 2. If you have City Directory access other than 1900, 1910, 1917, and 1921, could you check this for me? He is listed in 1921 as a carpenter. Thanks! Vince Summers

    1. [Phly-Rts] Asher Moore of the Universalist Church
    2. Nancy Cassada Nelson
    3. I am trying to find the maiden name of a lady named "Charlotte", who was married in Philadelphia 13 May 1844, by the Rev Asher Moore. The husband was Dr. William H. Gominger who practiced medicine in Philadelphia. His Civil War pension application file states the exact date of the marriage, where and by whom, but leaves out her maiden name. (She herself was already dead by that time, and her death record doesn't list the maiden name). The couple's four children were all born and died in Philadelphia but the records do not include the mother's maiden name. I have done a little search on the Rev. Moore & find that he was indeed in Philadelphia in this time frame, a part of the Universalist Church. He served a church in Trenton NJ for a brief time after that and appears in Mercer County NJ in the 1850 census. Since Charlotte was born in New Jersey, according to the various census where she appears, and since Dr. Gominger had relatives who migrated to Bordentown NJ in the mid 1840's, I really would like to learn her maiden name, just in case she is connected to any New Jersey families with which I am familiar. Can anyone steer me to an archive or other repository of this particular denomination in Philadelphia, where the marriage might be recorded? Nancy
