    1. [Phly-Rts] Information on Thomas and Sarah Gardner MERCER
    2. Tom Keels
    3. Hi everyone,   I'm interested in any genealogical information people may have on the Mercer family that lived on Queen Street in Southwark in the 1840s (33 Queen Street is the old street address).  This is the Mercer family that served as the basis for George Lippard's novel The Quaker City, or the Monks of Monk Hall.  I have all the contemporary newspaper stories about the Singleton Mercer-Heberton murder, but am interested in other members of the family besides Singleton, especially: Thomas Mercer (father), merchant, who died in 1848, age unknown, probably 60+. Sarah Gardner Mercer (sister), born ca. 1832-1833, death date unknown.  There was another brother and sister, whose names I do not have.  There was another Singleton Mercer, who lived into the 1890s and was an officer of the Farmers' and Mechanics' Bank.  He is buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery.  I'm not sure what his relationship was to the Thomas Mercer family.    I'm particularly interested in finding out whether Sarah married, when she died, and where Thomas, Sarah, and other family members may be buried.  They're not in Laurel Hill, where their son/brother Singleton (d. 1855, aged 35) is buried under the Yellow Fever Volunteers' monument.  I'd appreciate any help anyone might be able to offer.   Thanks, Tom Keels

    1. [Phly-Rts] Questions about area; Stevenson
    2. Marilyn Nevala
    3. Hi all, I live in Idaho and am having trouble figuring out some things about where records can be located in the Philadelphia area. I am trying to find the death record of a Jane or Jennie Patterson Stevenson who I believe died on 6 May 1934. (I have an original telegram sent to my family at the time that said Aunt Jennie died). The PA vital records cannot locate a death certificate and the free library of Philadelphia looked for obit/death notice from 7-11 May 1934 in the Philadelphia Bulletin and Evening Public Ledger and found nothing. She died suddenly (coronary thrombosis); perhaps they took her to a hospital not in Philadelphia County? In the 1930 census she (age 58) was living with her husband William Stevenson (age 57) at 6248 Gardenia Street, Philadelphia, where they had lived for many years. William was an engineer at Girard College - would the college have any records of him? He worked there more than 30 years - from before 1900 to after 1930. I can't locate his death either. Is there another place besides Philadelphia they might have died? What cemeteries are near their address? Can't find any cemetery information either, from what I can find on-line. So, I am hoping that someone can give me some ideas on how to search for their deaths/burlals. Thank you, Marilyn [email protected]
