Cool. I will check into that. It's not an extremely common name. Most of my sister-in-laws family are fairly recently in this country - maybe two generations. In fact, I think post Ellis Island material. Vince- I don't know about Philadelphia but there is an EGIZI Funeral Home run by the family in Gloucester County, NJ (on Ganttown Rd. just off Rt. 42) and next to it there is a clock shop run by a member of the EGIZI family also. Does anyone know where 22/26 Union street would be in the 1850 census? Via the city directories I found Enoch and John Castner at 26 Union. Then went to the census and located them in the Pine Ward, image 22. But seems this Union should be in South Wark ward??? Thanks, Jane
I am looking for the Family of Abraham & Sarah Fineman - I believe their son Philip Fineman may be my grandfather whose name seems to have changed to Philip Finney between 1920 & 1930 census when he moved from PA to NY. Are there any indexes to wills or obits for the 1930s Philadelphia area? Abraham & Sarah were still alive in the 1930 census. Living with his youngest son Benjamin. I am looking for something that would list Abraham or Sarah's children to see if Philip had changed his name. I live in FL so this would have to be done long distance, I do have access to Ancestry. I have sent for Philip's birth certificate PA & death certificate from California, to see if either help. But Abraham & Sarah's paperwork would be most likely to have their children's names. Thanks, Carol L. Heap FL
Has anyone on the list any connection to these gentlemen? They were all b. VA in the early 1800s and seem to have migrated to Philadelphia by 1840. Some were watermen or oystermen. They lived in Southwark and quite near to each other. The BULLs and TOWNSEND may have been cousins. They were also likely related to the families with these names in Accomack Co., VA and Somerset/Worcester Cos., MD. Their wives were from NJ or DE but their children were born in PA. Several of them lived to be quite old, dying 1880s or so. I have the Philadelphia mortuary notices from Genealogy Bank. And I have the deaths from the Familysearch pilot, census entries, and entries from the city directories available online. Any other ideas would be welcome particularly since we can't find Samuel M. TOWNSEND [ca 1806-1890] or his adult son Robert J. [bca 1825 VA] in the 1850 census. Samuel is in Philadelphia in 1840 and then 1860-1880. Also, am I interpreting this Philadelphia death record correctly? Samuel M. Townsend, dod 31 Jul 1854, death place: Philadelphia, 1 yr 11 mos, street address: SOUTH CAMDEN, S. Birdsall, MD. Was there a street called Camden or did he die in Camden? Perhaps they were in Camden, something went wrong, they rushed back across the river to the doctor in Philadelphia. Thanks, Liane
Hi Sandy, Yes, Charles is a mystery, but thought I'd ask the group for help. How about all the Foxhill variations!!! That would scare any researcher off. I'll check the FTM, but do not believe I have anything on this Florence. Which is wierd. Old George, Gertrude's father, went to Hudson, NJ in 1897 and in 1907 married Lillian Hauck, age "17"!!! Gad, that's like going to bed with your grandfather. Anyway, the forth child of that marriage was a Florence. BTY, Old George was born in 1861!!!! The name Hugh for Gertrude's husband does not ring a bell. In the Fernwood plot are a big mix of surnames. Foxhill, Maguire and a few others. I contacted one of the descendants who was about 90 and asked why no stone. Said there were too many names! Anyway, he did not know of the Foxhill name. Now don't you think he would wonder who???? So, how are you doing? Things remaining calm at your house? Many thanks for looking. Jane PS: where did you find this Gertrude? In the LDS site? ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, June 28, 2009 11:11 PM Subject: Re: [Phly-Rts] looking for: Charles Foxhill-Phila., Pa. > Ive been looking for over two hours for a clue on Charles Foxhill and he > is a worse mystery than my William Lawson! > > Well I did find a daughter that died that belongs to Gertrude Maguire.? > Florence May Maguire died September 12, 1911 and is buried at Glenwood > Cemetery.? Jane: You may want to consider Gloucester County of NJ - I remember taking photos at Bethel Cemetery down in the Sewell area a couple years ago for another lister and I am almost certain that I saw Foxhill's buried in that cemetery..........you may want to check out that angle. Hope it helps - also check cemetery lists on Rootsweb - that may help also. The Germantown Upper Burial Ground (Axe's Cemetery, the Old Concord Ground) (Germantown Ave. above Washington Lane) will be open from Noon to 4PM on 4 July 2009 with the traditional ringing of the Concord School House bell at 2PM. These two cemteries are the oldest non-sectarian cemeteries in Philadelphia, having been founded in 1692 and many of the early Germantown settlers are buried in them. Inquirer is on GenealogyBank up to 1922. Recent obits can be searched on Legacy.com. For everything in between, if you want to do it yourself, you'll have to find somewhere (a library?) near you that has the newspapers on microfilm. (I have no idea where in Idaho you would find the microfilm -- you'd have to research that). Otherwise, you can try the Free Library of Philadelphia (2 lookups at a time, max) or Temple U's Urban Archives (if you're searching for someone who might have been in an article the Bulletin morgue would have preserved in a clipping file). > Also, do obituaries from towns in Montgomery County get put in the > Philadelphia papers? The modern practice is, you give the details to the funeral director, who sends it to the papers. If any paper sees some detail that makes them think the deceased is someone they'd like to write a longer obit about, they contact the family for an interview. So, no, a MontCo paper's obit (i.e., a local news story written by their reporter) would not appear in another paper. And generally, if someone lived in MontCo, the Phila. papers wouldn't put in a full obit for them unless they were someone very prominent. > ...is there > a local paper for say, Ardmore, that might have more information? You could try the Delaware Co. Times, assuming you mean Ardmore in DelCo. There's also an Ardmore in MontgCo; if that's the one you mean, maybe the TimesHerald. Try this for online PA newspapers -- http://www.onlinenewspapers.com/ usstate/uspennsy.htm . HTH Claire K [email protected]
Check your local library website for access to Genealogy Bank. Philadelphia is in there. You will probably just need a library card to access. Hi, Does anyone know of any websites (free or paid) where Philadelphia area newspapers can be searched on-line for the period 1890 to 1970? I know they have them at the Free Library of Philadelphia, and I have had them do a few lookups for me, but I really need to go through the papers myself. And I live in Idaho. Also, do obituaries from towns in Montgomery County get put in the Philadelphia papers? I have only found death notices so far. And, is there a local paper for say, Ardmore, that might have more information? I have the dates I am interested in but it's not something I can ask someone to do for me, as I'm not entirely sure what I am looking for....... Hoping someone can provide this info to help in my search. Thanks, Marilyn
