Hi I have been told by a researcher, that so many people died in 1918 flu epidemic that all the death were listed in the newspaper. Good luck on your hunt. I am searching for information on my great-grandfather, Joseph Komaromy. I have a copy of his Certificate of Naturalization, but would like to find either the Declaration of Intention and/or Petition for Naturalization. His certificate #662762 on 14NOV1916 from Court of Quarter Sessions Phila PA Petition Volume 14 Number 3425: his address 1510 N. 4th Street, he was 43 years old at the time of certif, wife Magdelena 36 yrs, Daughters: Katherine 17 yrs, Anna 15 yrs, Helen 14 years, and Elizabeth 13 yrs. They are Hungarian. The wife and 4 girls immigrated on 24SEP1904 to Ellis Island, but I have been unable to find Joseph. I believe his occupation was tailor, but city directories for 1912 and 1916 list him as an ironworker. I was told that he and his daughter, Katherine, died in the flu epidemic in 1918, but I am looking for confirmation of that also. Joseph, Magdalena, and Katherine may be buried in a cemetary with the word Green in it? Thanks for any help you can provide. Sally

Thank heaven! After all our letters and e-mails, I would have been very unhappy is they closed the libraries and the archives, and I don't live in Pennsylvania. Not only that, I would have been very upset if my request for records was left setting in a closed archive building! http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/heardinthehall/59652447.html http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/cityhall/59653277.html Although, I do believe their threats possibly were a way to find out just how important these services really are to "the little people". Does anyone have access to the obituary of David H. Jarrett of Lawnside, NJ? I believe he was an educator in Philadelphia. He was a marvelous friend of mine and I had heard he was alive and very active and so I wrote him. It may be he was close to death when I did. He died in Lawnside, New Jersey, November 10, 2006, aged 92. Vince Summers
Here's one: Philadelphia Inquirer, The (PA) - November 22, 2006 Deceased Name: David H. Jarrett, 92, educator David H. Jarrett, 92, a beloved special-education and shop teacher at Benjamin Franklin High School, died of cancer Friday. He died in his home, behind a cemetery on "Boot Hill" in Lawnside. Mr. Jarrett graduated from Central High School in 1932, and earned a bachelor's degree in business in 1937 from what was then Hampton Institute in Virginia. He returned to Philadelphia after graduating, but it was during the Great Depression, and there were few jobs for educated African Americans. He ended up working as a chauffeur and a railroad porter for several years. Mr. Jarrett was denied entry into the military during World War II because of a heart condition, his family said. In 1943, he married Adrienne Closson, and the couple moved to Millside, Del., where he managed a grocery store for five years. Mr. Jarrett returned to Philadelphia in 1948 and worked as a recreation director for the city. In the late 1950s, Mr. Jarrett and two others started the Poplar Area Boys' Club in North Philadelphia, an athletic and social program. In 1950, Mr. Jarrett got a job teaching special education and wood shop at Ben Franklin. In the 1960s, he led the district's Neighborhood Youth Corps, which helped young people find jobs. He retired from his recreation job in 1970. Mr. Jarrett earned a master's degree in education in 1952 from Temple University. On Oct. 27, 1970, several hundred Ben Franklin students staged a "sit-in" in the auditorium. They gave principal Leon Bass a list of 27 demands. They asked for permission to hang a picture of Malcolm X in the school, more remedial reading and academic classes, fewer trade courses, completion of the language lab, and something to be done about gangs. Demand No. 27 was that Mr. Jarrett be named dean of men. Many of the demands were met, and Mr. Jarrett was named dean of men, a position he held until retiring in 1980. In 1970, Betty Shabazz, Malcolm X's widow, visited the school and dedicated a bust of her husband, said former student Tracey L. Burke Sr., now a deputy chief in the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency in Washington. If not for Mr. Jarrett's "early intervention, I probably would be sharing a space [jail or grave] with some of my former classmates," Burke said. "He inspired me to excel. The late 1960s and early 1970s was a period of turmoil, and Mr. Jarrett provided stability to many young black men." In retirement, Mr. Jarrett was a practicing Jehovah's Witness who knocked on doors and spread the word of the Lord. "He wore a suit and went door to door, seven days a week, six hours a day, until he was diagnosed with cancer one month ago," daughter Renee Sewell said. Mr. Jarrett and three others published a book of poetry, Through Our Eyes (Trafford Publishing, 2006). In addition to his wife and daughter, Mr. Jarrett is survived by a son, David Jr.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. If you go to the office at City Hall (Room 415 - I think) you can request a search for that cert -- then you'll have to go back a few days later and they will let you view a copy (you can't take that home but you can write down the info -- this option is considerably less in price -- I think it's $10). If you want a copy and don't want to pay all the $$ it says on the website, go to the same office and request a copy -- it's $20 and they will mail it to your home so you don't have to make a second trip. I think by going to the office to make the initial request you save $15. Hope that helps!!! ________________________________ From: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, September 15, 2009 3:01:40 AM Subject: PHILLY-ROOTS Digest, Vol 4, Issue 193 When replying to a digest message, quote only the specific message to which you are replying, removing the rest of the digest from your reply. This is from the Free Library of Philadelphia website: All Free Library of Philadelphia Branch, Regional and Central Libraries Closed Effective Close of Business October 2, 2009 All Free Library of Philadelphia Customers, We deeply regret to inform you that without the necessary budgetary legislation by the State Legislature in Harrisburg, the City of Philadelphia will not have the funds to operate our neighborhood branch libraries, regional libraries, or the Parkway Central Library after October 2, 2009. Specifically, the following will take effect after the close of business, October 2, 2009: All branch and regional library programs, including programs for children and teens, after school programs, computer classes, and programs for adults, will be cancelled All Parkway Central Library programs, including children programs, programs to support small businesses and job seekers, computer classes and after school programs, will be cancelled. We are exploring the possibility of relocating the Philadelphia Author Series programs to other non-library facilities. All library visits to schools, day care centers, senior centers and other community centers will cease. All community meetings at our branch and regional libraries, and the Parkway Central Library, will be cancelled. All GED, ABE and ESL programs held at Free Library branches will be discontinued, students should contact their teacher to see if other arrangements are being made. In addition, all library materials will be due on October 1, 2009. This will result in a diminishing borrowing period for books and other library materials, beginning September 11, 2009. No library materials will be able to be borrowed after September 30, 2009. Even as we remain hopeful that the State Legislature will act and pass the enabling funding legislation, we wanted to notify all of our customers of this very possible outcome. If you have any questions about impacts to Free Library services, call 215-686-5322, or visit the Free Library of Philadelphia website at www.freelibrary.org. The people at Northwood are nice. I live in California so I've only talked on the phone with them. It helps if you know the spouse of the deceased in case there are several buried there with the same name. The no. is 215-424-4996. They've been able to tell me the Lot No. & Section & who is buried there. Arthur: I am assuming your Justice Cox/Coxe/Cock might be one of the descendants of the original Swedes who settled the Delaware Valley. If so, Dr. Peter Craig of Washington, DC, has done a great amount of work on the descendants of those families. You can find him by googling his name, or at the Swedish Colonial Society, etc.... He was reportedly born about 1775. Any information would be appreciated. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Arthur Hopkins Web site: A Hopkins Family History <http://home.comcast.net/%7Eadhopkins/index.htm> Federal Way,WA ********* Visit the threaded archives of this list: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/PHILLY-ROOTS ********* ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
If you search Justice Cox and either Philadelphia or Pennsylvania on GoogleBooks you can find a History of Bucks County. This article is about the son of Justice and Elizabeth Cox and says he was born in Kingsessing in 1805. Also claims descent from Otto Ernst Cox of Swedish origins. There is a Phila will abstract for Robert Graham, grazier, of Kingsessing, 24 Mar 1779: Wife Elizabeth, other family listed - then wife's daughter Ann Lampler, wife's son Justice Cox, wife's sister Mary Lodg and her daughter Elizabeth Armstrong. One of the witnesses was Henry Paschall. Evidently Justice Cox's mother was Elizabeth ( ) (Cox) Graham. IF this is the right man. There is a cluster of Justices in Kingsessing with connections to MD. Use different combinations of names on Googlebooks and you will find a fair amount of information. If you haven't already, be sure to look at : http://www.phillygenweb.org/ http://www.usgwarchives.org/pa/philadelphia/ I would search wills and marriages in particular. Church records for Kingsessing should be very useful. Liane
