Highlights of the collection will be on display at a free event at 6 p.m. October 14. Project archivist Cathleen Miller will discuss the collection and share information about this fascinating family. The history of the Chew family in America goes back to 1622, when John Chew arrived in Jamestown, Virginia, aboard the Charitie. One of the family's most well known members is Benjamin Chew, who served as chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court from 1775 to 1777. The British occupied Cliveden, Chew's country house, which became a main stage of the Battle of Germantown in October of 1777. The Chew family was influential in the early republic, with extensive political connections to prominent judicial and political figures including the Penn family, presidents, members of Congress, diplomats, and others. Nearly every significant national and international event during the 18th and 19th centuries is documented in the Chews' correspondence with their friends and acquaintances. In addition to the collection's emphasis on the Chew family and Philadelphia's elite, the papers provide a perspective on the lives of many of the Chews' slaves and servants and offer insights into family relationships, the treatment of enslaved people, women's history, health, religion, legal history, the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, politics, trade, land management and settlement, surveying, the industrialization of western New Jersey, and the growth and development of the city of Philadelphia. The processing project was funded through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and individual donations. The 650-page finding aid is now available on the Historical Society's Web site at www.hsp.org/default.aspx?id=35. I'd GUESS that Delany Place East was at / intersected with 743 S. 7th -- or the building opens on two streets, parallel or intersecting. OR you overlooked a comma (easy to do with the microfilmed / digital PCDs) and the "Delany" (could it have been Delanc(e)y?) address is home and the other is business -- but in that case, there should have been an "h" preceding the address to indicate "home" address. According to Mapquest, the 7th St. address today is just below Fitzwater, and there is an unlabeled one-block street just to the east. Maybe this is / was Delany Place?? Based on the 1861 listing, this is probably still his business address. Did you note (for both directories) whether they were business directories? Phila. Historic Streets Index at http://www.phillyhistory.org/historicstreets/ does not have a Delany Place. PhillyHistory.org (photos) came up with Delancey Place when I searched for Delany. BTW, Footnote.com has all the Phila. City Directories, if you have a subscription or can get to a National Archives or library (etc.) that has one. HTH Claire K [email protected]

    3. I just remembered that a cousin went to Philadelphia and found all our family re-interments at either the Historical Society of Pennsylvania or the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania (they are now housed in the same building): GSP's direct link to repositories of Philadelphia: http://www.genpa.org/RepositoriesPhilaGen.html GSP's main page: http://www.genpa.org/index.html Historical Society of Pennsylvania: http://www.hsp.org/default.aspx Mount Moriah Cemetery: http://www.mountmoriahcemetery.org/component/option,com_frontpage/Itemid,1/ I've checked my Philadelphia Cemetery books, but can't find the information you are seeking and Warton St. Cem. isn't listed at all. Moriah, Dec. 19, 1881.    And burial Aug. 10, 1882 at Wharton St. Church Cemetery to Mt. Moriah May 29, 1883. Thank you, Jane

    3. O God save us from this thinking! Intoxication is only one cause of automobile deaths - stupid drivers who ignore the rules of the road are more of a problem! Gene is not forcing anyone to drink nor is he advocating drunk driving. Stafford J.
