I believe there is enough money in the fund to pay for a basic 12 marker screening test. However, the person to be tested would have to be a straight line male Phillips descendant of your David Phillips. In other words, his last name needs to be Phillips. Hi, Wanda, Yes, there is a DNA test for women, but it is not very effective for genealogical research. Women have something called mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) that can be tested. However, mtDNA cannot be tied to any specific surname, because women traditionally change their last names every generation when they get married. Also, mtDNA mutates or changes very, very slowly, much slower than male DNA (yDNA). In fact, mtDNA mutates so slowly that your mtDNA is probably exactly the same as your direct maternal ancestor who lived thousands of years ago. This means that mtDNA testing works better for anthropological research than for genealogical research.
