Hunting for my GGrandfather, Bennett S. Phillips, of Linn County, who disappeared early in the civil war. He married my GGrandmother, Elizabeth Johnson Phillips, in December of 1844. He was enumerated with his family in both the 1850 and 1860 federal census in Linn County, MO.. Since she remarried a Mr. Porch in 1864, I've always assumed something happened to him around 1861 or 1862. GGrandfather Bennett was always meticulous about the use of his middle initial "S" and sometimes went by B.S. Phillips especially on the census. According to the census, he was born in 1808 and I believe he was married in 1834 in Boone county to Frances Crouch or Craucher. He had a boy, "John" with his family in the 1850 census, about 12 years of age who I always believed was a son with Frances. He was a feisty cuss, I believed I found his name in the roster of the 11th Missouri Infantry (Confederate) which would seem about right for Grandpa Bennett. I do know, however, that there may have been some problems between him and some of the Ballews, because my Dad never liked them (went after them when he was drinking) and I never knew why! Think they were Confederate, though. I remember reading about someone named Phillips, can't remember the first name, who was shot in the back on the Grand River bridge outside Sumner, Mo and did kill the man who shot him before he died. I always believed that was my GGF. It seems like I read this when I was much younger in the old "Sumner Star". Would sure appreciate some help or suggestions. Cal Phillips phillipscalvin@prodigy.net
Do you know if any of your Phillips relatives ever lived in Kentucky or Southern Indiana??? I am a Phillips and thats where my family is from and some originated from North Carolina from the Indian Reservation.
