Born May 17, 1988 in Vallejo, Calif., to Steven and Angelia Phillips, he died Feb. 24, 2008 in Baghdad, Iraq. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Barbara Phillips. Pokey had always wanted to be in the military and enlisted in the delayed-entry program with the U.S. Army during his senior year of high school. Considered by friends and family to be a phenomenal artist, he even turned down college scholarships for the chance to serve his country. Pokey was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and loved the outdoors and camping. After his graduation from Ardmore High School in 2006, he left for boot camp in June of that year and was serving in the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) in Baghdad, Iraq. His military friends said, "No matter how bad things got, Pokey always made people laugh." Survivors include his parents, Ardmore; two brothers, David Phillips and Anthony Phillips, and a sister, Barbara Phillips, all of Ardmore; paternal grandfather, Donald Phillips and his wife, Kati, Marietta; and maternal grandfather, James Goodrich, Washington, Ind. A military escort will serve as bearers.
