M. PHILLIPS, CHENEY PIONEER IS DEAD Richard Monroe Phillips, died at the Deaconess hospital in Spokane Sunday evening of abcess of the lungs after an illness of nearly a month. He was born at Salem, OR, on December 20, 1861, and removed with his parents to Amity, OR, when six years of age, where he resided until 1883, when he moved and located on a homestead nine miles southwest of Cheney. He was married to Miss Clara Lance in 1890, his wife dying little more than two years later, leaving an infant son which survived only a few weeks. He was well and favorably known throughout eastern Washigton, having lived near Cheney for 35 years. He became a member of the Masonic lodge, where he was highly esteemed, as was evidenced by the beautiful flowers and the number of brothers and friends who came to pay their last respects to a loved one who had lived in their community. He is survived by two brothers and three sisters-Oscar Phillips, Charles W. Phillips, Mrs. J. W. Watt, and Mrs. G. B. Moore, all of Cheney, and Mrs. James McLaughlin of Kendrick, Idaho.
