After re-reading Dennis' post, I understand your response. Of course, when I read it the first time, I immediately understood him to mean ethnicity rather than the etymology of the surname. We don't often rely on etymology to immediately connotate ethnicity in the U.S. - our history won't allow it (with colonization being just as rampant elsewhere, I can't imagine too many other countries have this luxury in their genealogical research either, do they?). So I immediately assumed he wasn't talking about the origin of the surname. Hopefully Peggy and Dennis understood each other better than the rest of us! ;) As for my use of the word indian, hopefully I didn't offend anyone. No one I know that is indian actually calls themselves native american. But native american IS the more politically correct word to use, as Sharon said. Best to everyone! I promise not to post anymore on this! ;) Sherri captbrian <[email protected]> wrote: Being a Brit., the word 'Indian' means from India to me - I've been there and never met a Phillips - but I realise that it means what I call red indian over in US. Nevertheless an indian person may well call himself Phillips but that no more makes Phillips an 'indian' name than my calling myself Geronimo would make Geronimo a Welsh name.
