I also think it is likely that Richard was the son of Bennett Phillips, who was the oldest son of Joseph and Mary Phillips. Don't pay any attention to the spelling of Philips versus Phillips. Most people back in those days were illiterate and most spelling was done phonetically. Keep in mind that Webster's Dictionary was not published until 1806 and before that time there was no guide to how words should be spelled. Most people had no concept that one way of spelling a word was more "correct" than another way. In fact, Benjamin Franklin once said he could never respect a man who could only spell a word one way! I am amazed that your autosomal DNA indicates you are 20% Native American. This is a very high percentage and it means one of your grandparents was nearly 100% Native American, or two of your grandparents were nearly 50% Native Americans. Most people know whether their grandparents were 100% or even just 50% Native American. This makes me suspect that your autosomal DNA test is mistaken. Autosomal DNA tests are still highly controversial. If you want to find out if your straight maternal line is Native American, you should take the mtDNA test. It is MUCH more accurate than the autosomal test. Nancy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
