Dr. Benjamin PHILIPPS was born about 1772, location unknown, year estimated from death certificate and from his m.i.. In 1790, probably in Bombay, India, he earned his Certificate of Corporation of Surgeons. On April 30th., 1794, he was was placed on the Muster Roll of the 2nd. European Infantry, Bombay, India [Hodson’s Index: Bo Med 245]. On March 20th., 1802, in Bombay, Benjamin PHILLIPS <sic>, Surgeon of the 7th. Regiment of Native Infantry married (1) Charlotte Ann PAGE (Asiatic Annual Register rd iv, page 116; also index of marriages in Bombay Presidency on Mormon film # 0498563). His name was spelled Philips in the Service Army Lists, Medical, Bombay, and in the Roll of Corporation of Surgeons. On January 7th., 1818, he became a Member of the Bombay Medical Board. In 1819, in Bombay, he married (2) Harriet(t) DRAPER (index of marriages in Bombay Presidency on Mormon film # 0498563). Surgeon Major Benjamin PHILIPPS retired on November 21st., 1825. Benjamin sailed from Bombay to England, leaving on November 20th., 1825, on the S. S. Brittania. By 1830, Benjamin PHILIPPS, esq., was living in 3 Berkeley Place, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England (Pigot’s Directory). Benjamin PHILIPPS, aged 66, died of “spasms” on March 13th., 1838, in 3 Berkeley Place, Cheltenham - I have his death certificate; he was buried with m.i. in The Cheltenham Chapel Graveyard, St. George’s Place, Cheltenham (grave marker # 154). Benjamin’s will mentions his widow, Harriet, together with his four children: Henry, James Rees, Elizabeth Henrietta and John Sutherland, in that order. Harriet, aged 68, died in Cheltenham, on December 13th., 1858 and was buried with Benjamin. There is a possible linkage with Levi PHILIPPS, who may be his brother, also employed in Bombay by the Honourable East India Company. I am seeking assistance on the parentage and / or pedigree of Benjamin PHILIPPS. Can anyone help, please? Best wishes. Peter Ferreira Toronto, Canada.
