POW/MIA-DNA Korean War Carroll Co, GREEN, PHILLIPS Replies: 1 POW/MIA-DNA Korean War Carroll Co, GREEN, PHILLIPS raysestak126 (View posts) Posted: 22 Mar 2007 7:36PM Classification: Query Surnames: GREEN, PHILLIPS I am searching for the family of two soldiers who was killed in the Korea War. When they entered service they gave Carroll County, Georgia as their home of record. Soldier: HERSCHEL DAVE GREEN Born: Jan. 20, 1931, Caucasian Date of loss: October 18, 1951, KIA in North Korea Soldier: WILLIAM DANIEL PHILLIPS Born: October 14, 1928, Caucasian Date of loss: July 16, 1950 MIA in South Korea When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 70 families from Georgia that has not been located. There are two families from Carroll County that has not been located. When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find these families. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency. I will be grateful for any assistance in locating these families. Just not sure how yet. We have been trying to figure out who this Thomas' father is. His mother is Elizabeth, age 50, on the 1860 census, where she is listed with her children, Thomas, Stephen and others (Stephen and Thomas are living next to each other on the 1870/1880 census). We don't know who Elizabeth's husband was, though I'm assuming he was deceased by 1860. I've wondered if her husband was a younger brother to Thomas (b. 1788). Any thoughts on this? I agree with the other reply to this thread, where there are so many different Phillips families in Overton county, a dna test would really be worthwhile, especially since we know already from the dna testing done that they weren't all related. I'd be glad to discuss this family further if you'd like. Amy. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Alicia - Maybe I have found something that will help you. Not sure but worth looking at. In the 1870 census in Chattahoochee, GA there was an Obadiah Phillips listed with his family. This included a John A - age 16. Here is the family composition at that time: Obadiah Phillips - age 45 Harriet - age 30 John A - age 16 Jarvis H - age 12 Edmund - age 9 Obadiah - age 7 William D - age 4 If this is the right family I found a marriage note for Obadiah Phillips and Harriet Susan Daniel married 11 Dec 1851 in Jones, GA. John and parents were in Bartow Co. for the 1860 through 1880 censuses.I am particularly interested in John B.'s spouses. He married first (unknown) after 1880 and then Ludie Young (daughter of Lewis Young and Sarah C. Phillips) about 1896. The 1900 census lists John B. and Ludie in Floyd Co., Ga along with daughters by first marriage: Carl, Artie, Georgia, and Nettie (although census showed all except Nettie as nieces instead of daughters). We now have over 200 participants and, using DNA analysis, we have identified 28 separate, unrelated families of Phillips. In addition, we have over 60 participants who do not yet have any matches in the project. If you have a male relative with the surname Phillips, he qualifies to join the project and get tested. The test is painless and only involves scraping some cells from the inside of the cheek and mailing the samples to the lab. The donor is given a kit number and is only publically identified by his kit number in order to protect his privacy. Here is a link to our website at worldfamilies where you can read more about DNA testing and how it works in conjunction with traditional genealogical research: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/p/phillips/index.html Be sure to look at the Patriarchs Page to see if any of the Phillips pedigrees of our current members look familiar to you. Hope you have a male Phillips family member who decides to join! Sincerely, Nancy Kiser Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
