    3. There is much on Major William Phillips on the internet. Do a Google search on "Major William Phillips" and check both the net and the books. I did find the following Bridget Hutchinson John Sanford: MARRIAGE: (1) By 1633 Elizabeth Webb, sister of Henry Webb (in his will of 5 April 1660 Henry Webb made a bequest to "my late sister Elizabeth Sanford's sons John and Samuell Sanford". (2) By 1637 Bridget Hutchinson, bp. Alford, Lincolnshire, 15 January 1619, daughter of William and Anne (Marbury) Hutchinson. She married (2) by 1656 as his third wife William Phillips (child b. Boston 18 September 1656) Susanna Aspinwall In her will of 10 September 1650, Susanna Phillips, widow of William Phillips, after making bequests to her children, gave £5 to Elizabeth Aspinwall, wife of William Aspinwall, and then enlisted the aid of William Aspinwall in making a provisional bequest: "if any of my brother or sister's children come over to live within two years after my decease, six pounds apiece, to the value of eighteen pounds, the first three that come to demand it" 1:127; NEHGR 5:448]. Although these two bequests do not state any relationship between Susanna Phillips and the Aspinwalls, the possibility exists. Source: The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England 1620-1633, Volumes I-III Susanna Stanly Savage says: That his wife (William Aspinwal) Elizabeth was, “somehow sister of Christopher Stanley, more probably his wife Susanna, who became wife of Lieutenant William Phillips” By his will of February, 1682, Major Phillips gave his lands in Maine to his wife and two sons, Samuel and William, the latter of whom was then a captive among the Spaniards. Mrs. Phillips outlived her husband, and by her wukk if the Spetember 29, 1696, bequeathed to Peleg Sanford, Samuel Phillips, William Phillips and Eliphal Stretton, one-fourth part of her lands in the tract of eight miles square. The other three-fourths were reserved for the payments o the debts of her husband, deceased. If there were no debts, then that part was to be divided among her four children (presumably those before mentioned in her will) with the exception of one thousand acres given to her grandson, William, son of William and Eliphal (Sanford) Stretton. It would appear that, during the lifetime of Phillips and his immediate heirs, no steps were taken toward the laying out of the proposed township – it had an imaginary existence far away in the “forest primeval,” but had not even been projected on paper. It was not until several years after the death of the principal and his sons, that any definite action was taken in regard to the matter. On the 15th of June, 1720, however, Samuel Tyley of Boston, and Theodore Atkinson were appointed attorney and assistant attorney, respectively, of the proprietors, the major part, at least, of the heirs of the Phillips, of nineteen thousand acres above Wells, with power “to survey and make a division of the land belonging thereto.” That they might avail themselves of any advantage arising from such a division, and that their lands might be offered for sale under more favorable conditions, the following parties were interested in the survey and division: Source: http://www.sanfordhistory.org/local_history.htm John Buczek -----Original Message----- From: phillips-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:phillips-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of gc-gateway@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, January 14, 2008 1:06 PM To: PHILLIPS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [PHILLIPS] Major William Phillips This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. 1. [PHILLIPS] PHILLIPS in New York (Wayne, Madison, and Onondaga Counties)
    2. Looking to connect with anyone on the following line in Wayne County, New York: William PHILLIPS (b. 1809 - d. before 1870) (maybe in Palmyra, Wayne County) married to a Catharine UNKNOWN (b. abt. 1819). Children: 1) Jacob (b. 1843) married Margaret (had a child named William) 2) Edson (b. 1845) 3) Ethan (b. 1845 - d. 1864) 4) Sanford (b. 1850 - 1897) married Josephine CHESEBRO ALLEN. She was from Madison County, New York. Sanford and Josephine is the line that I connect through. They had three children. Edwin, Sanford, and William. William was born in 1886 and quite possibly died around 1960. After his mother Josephine passed away in 1897, he lived with his grandparents in Wampsville, Madison County, NY. He may have married a Helen FRENCH. I heard through old family tales that William stayed in Madison County and later Syracuse - going by Willie Phillips. Do you connect to this line of PHILLIPS? 3. Hi, Pat, I don't have the schedule of Zachariah's property, but here is his pension request: Zachariah Phillips S 35,559 NC In Estill County, Kentucky, on May 17, 1830, Zachariah Phillips, aged 67, appeared in court in Estill County aforesaid, and made oath: That he enlisted for 1 year in April 1781. That he joined the company of Captain Thomas Donahue on June 1st, 1781. That he enlisted in North Carolina in the company commanded by said Donahue in the Regiment commanded by Col. Henry Dickson in the line of the state of North Carolina, on the Continental establishment. That he continued to serve in said corps till the 1st of June 1782, when he was discharged from the service in South Carolina near Bacon's Bridge, but did not receive a certificate of the discharge till he arrived at Salsburry, North Carolina (Note: Salisbury is in Rowan Co NC). That his certificate was signed by Colonel Murphy on whom the command of the said regiment devolved and at the time of said Phillips discharge, Captain William Wallen had preceded said Donohoe in the command of the company. That about February 1822, he removed with his family from Monroe County, Virginia to Scott County, Virginia and from Scott County Virginia to Estill County, Kentucky in the summer of 1825 and has continued to reside in Estill County, Kentucky ever since. That his wife is dead and his children have all left him since they married, or have turned out for themselves. That he has usually followed farming as a means of livelihood and has usually made gun handles now and then. That his children being able to take care of themselves are of no charge to him. That from his advanced age, he is unable to procure a comfortable livelihood by the pursuit of any occupation. That none of his family lives with him. That his youngest child, a son, is 17 years of age. Zachariah's birth year and wife's name is established from a statement he made on behalf of his father-in-law, Israil Meadows as follows: 1838 Oct 5 - Zachariah Phillips of Estill Co, KY says on oath that he was born in the year 1763 and first became acquainted with Israil Meadows dec’d about 50 years ago in the County of Greenbrier, Virginia.. that he (Israil Meadows) and Barbara Meadows his widow who has signed the foregoing declaration were then living together as man and wife and continued to do so till the death of the said Izrail which took place as he (Zachariah Phillips) believes on 30 September 1827 in Estill County and that he never heard any one to question the loyality of their marriage. At the time they had several children one named Nancy who he (Zachariah) afterwards married. His wife was at that time a girl 18 or 20 and from what he has always understood as to the age of his deceased wife she would if living be 60 years old the next spring. As far as I know, we do not have any male Phillips descendants of Zachariah and Nancy Meadows Phillips in the Phillips Worldwide DNA Project. If you know any male Phillips descendants, please encourage them to join. It would be interesting to see if they match any of the 232 members of the project. 1. Re: [PHILLIPS] Gabriel Phillips (d 1809 SC)
    2. Prairie dog: I am interested in your Gabriel Phillips who ended up in SC and died in 1809. I am looking for a Thomas Phillips, born ca 1740 (don't know where) who lived in Pittsylvania Co. VA in the 1760s - 1790s. He also had a daughter named Susannah. (Susannah married 1794 Josiah Sparks, and they went to Union Co. SC.) This Thomas Phillips married Margaret Buchanan. I don't have the names of any other children for them, nor the death dates of Thomas and Margaret. Thomas likely could have been Welsh. Allied names were Wright, Ownby, and Powell (along with Sparks). Do you have a list of the siblings of your Gabriel Phillips? I know Thomas is a very common name in the Phillips lines, and in 25 years I have not found another researcher looking for this Thomas. I have not checked in PA, however. Thanks for any information. 1. [PHILLIPS] Gabriel Phillips (d 1809 SC): Seeking his father
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: prairiedog166 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.phillips/8061/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Because Gabriel did not sign his Last Will he probably was illiterate and therefore we may assume the same of his father. We assume that Gabriel was Quaker since there is no census record of his slave ownership and Bucks County was home to many anti-slave Quakers, especially Welsh Quakers. Gabriel's father may have been a Welsh-persuasion Quaker. In 1758 Gabriel (Philipps) married Hannah Brower and Brower may be a German name. Their marriage was in a Lutheran oriented church (Tohickon) but it was a "union" church-several protestant denominations used a union church. Their first child Susanna, b 1759, was baptized in the church in 1760. It is probable that Hannah and the Browers were German and Lutheran because Quakers did not baptize infants. If we could find Browers in Bucks County we might find a clue to the life and times of Gabriel and his parentage. Gabriel may have been a Baptist. There is a record of one of his sons (Gabriel Jr) having become a Baptist minister in South Carolina. Usually ministers were literate so it may be that Hannah and her family were somewhat educated and that she was instrumental in her son Gabriel's religious career. Gabriel probably lived in Bucks County before getting married in 1758. He probably lived there when his daughter was baptized in 1760. Undocumented as far as I know: Gabriel's son Peter was supposedly recorded as a birth or baptism at Tohickon Union Church in 1763. Tohickon is located near Bedminister township, Bucks County. Summary: Because Gabriel is an unusual first name it should be easier to find his father. (DNA match connects Gabriel to a John Phillips, possibly a brother. But John is so common that we are lucky to have a Gabriel to concentrate on.) IF Hannah was Gabriel's first marriage he may have been about 25 years old in 1758, therefore born somewhere around 1733-but where? If Gabriel was a Quaker and married an outsider he would have been formally disowned by the Quaker church and probably by his father, thus possibly erased from family bibles, etc. Are the Browers hard to find because the name was Brauer or other German name? Gabriel may have been Welsh: most of his 12marker matches are to surnames identified with Wales. In 1733 Welsh imigrants were still using the old naming system; he may have been born Gabriel ap Philip. Gabriel's "older brother" John is first documented in Virginia (1790 census) and North Carolina (d 1801, Last Will marked with His X). Gabriel is documented in Pennsylvania and-in 1783--South Carolina. Between 1760 and 1783 there is no documentation of Gabriel. If the father was still living in 1783 he might have been in SC with Gabriel. Gabriel died in Newberry, SC in 1809, documented by probated will. If we could find his grave we might find a father buried nearby. Many researchers claim, undocumented, that Gabriel was born in Ireland. Because there are many Irish named cities and towns in Pennsylvania it could be that he was born in one of those Pennsylvania locations (not in Ireland).
