Amy, I'm curious about the Phillips in White Co., TN, too. My Phillips ancestors lived mostly in Roane & Bledsoe counties, but they did move around and lived in both Monroe and White counties. I don't remember them living in Giles Co., but they very well could have. MY Phillips lived in SC, then moved to NC, then TN. My Phillips are very likely from the Phillips Family Group 2 on the Worldwide Phillips DNA Project, but I do not know that for sure. My Elizabeth Phillips was born 1810 or 1811 somewhere in SC. In 1834 or 1835, she was married to an Irishman named Tom Jordan. This Elizabeth and her family were still in NC. Her first child, Emaline, was born 1835 in NC. By the next census, Elizabeth was in TN. Elizabeth was either the sister or aunt of Rev. Sewell Phillips. Do any of these people fit into the families you found in White and Giles counties? Phillips was the child of James Phillips and Mary MNU. I have a Thomas Hartwell Phillips in my line. I know very little about him but have been told by another Phillips researcher that he was born about 1790 and died about 1850 in Limestone Co., Alabama. No clue who his wife[s] could have been but I know that he had a son name Thomas Anthony Phillips (b. 10 MAR 1814, VA; d. 18/20 MAR 1885) who married Permelia (Pamela) Coyle on 10 SEP 1855 in Madison Co., AL. I don't know how reliable it is but I was also told that the parents of Thomas Hartwell Phillips were Anthony (hence his grandson's middle name) Phillips [b. circa 1754] and Lillian Buford [b. circa 1758]. Are we talking about the same Thomas H.? Do any of these Phillips' sound familiar? Mike mccollum211@msn.com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hi, I am trying to track down more information on my great-grandparents, William Edward ("Eddie") King (born in March 1850 in Robeson County, NC) and Margret J. Edwards King (born in September 1851 in Robeson County, NC). The son of Stark and Jane King, William Edward ("Eddie") King was a farmer and carpenter. He married Margret J. Edwards on October 20, 1870 in Robeson County, North Carolina, and they had eleven children, nine of whom survived infancy, including: daughters: Dannie, Mattie E., Loula L., Mary, and Nettie Donnie (married names Neely and Riley) and sons: Larance, Lonzo ("Lonnie"), and Earnest B. King (aka Earnest Robert Cain). After the births of their older children, Margret and Eddie and their children moved from Robeson County, North Carolina to what became Dillon County, South Carolina. Eddie is probably buried somewhere in either Robeson County, North Carolina or Dillon County, South Carolina where the family moved. The daughter of Eli Edwards and Jane Phillips Edwards, Margret J. Edwards King was a homemaker and farm laborer. Like her husband, she is probably buried somewhere in either Robeson County, North Carolina or Dillon County, South Carolina where the family moved. Does anyone know when Eddie and Margret died and where they are buried? Did Eddie re-marry? I would appreciate any help, ideas, or information on the family. Hi Donna, I have a Pinckney G. Phillips in Cherokee Co., Texas. He was there in the early 1850's, coming from Butler Co., Alabama. He was born 1812 in South Carolina according to some census records, although one has that he was born in Georgia. There is a George Washington Phillips who also lived in Cherokee Co., TX. I think he was a brother to Pinckney. George was born in 1814. I checked their children and Pinckney would have had children the age of your R. B., but there's no R.B. in either family. I'm thinking that the reason Georgia is listed as a birthplace is that coming from SC many folks stopped in Georgia on their way. In checking my records I found R. B. in my database with the notation that the info came from ssydney2000@aol.com. R.B. Is most likely related to Pinckney and George but I don't know how at this point. Pinckney is a brick-wall, I have no idea who his parents were. Good luck in your search. Please let me know if you do find R.B.'s parents...it may be a clue for me. MY REPLY: Dear John Buczek, Many, many thanks for the material on Major William Phillips. I'm very grateful for your help. All the best, Mary Jane Phillips ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Buczek" <John.Buczek@comcast.net> To: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com>; <phillips@rootsweb.com>; <PHILLIPS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 14, 2008 4:58 PM Subject: Re: [PHILLIPS] Major William Phillips There is much on Major William Phillips on the internet. Do a Google search on "Major William Phillips" and check both the net and the books. I did find the following Bridget Hutchinson John Sanford: MARRIAGE: (1) By 1633 Elizabeth Webb, sister of Henry Webb (in his will of 5 April 1660 Henry Webb made a bequest to "my late sister Elizabeth Sanford's sons John and Samuell Sanford". (2) By 1637 Bridget Hutchinson, bp. Alford, Lincolnshire, 15 January 1619, daughter of William and Anne (Marbury) Hutchinson. She married (2) by 1656 as his third wife William Phillips (child b. Boston 18 September 1656) Susanna Aspinwall In her will of 10 September 1650, Susanna Phillips, widow of William Phillips, after making bequests to her children, gave £5 to Elizabeth Aspinwall, wife of William Aspinwall, and then enlisted the aid of William Aspinwall in making a provisional bequest: "if any of my brother or sister's children come over to live within two years after my decease, six pounds apiece, to the value of eighteen pounds, the first three that come to demand it" 1:127; NEHGR 5:448]. Although these two bequests do not state any relationship between Susanna Phillips and the Aspinwalls, the possibility exists. Source: The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England 1620-1633, Volumes I-III Susanna Stanly Savage says: That his wife (William Aspinwal) Elizabeth was, "somehow sister of Christopher Stanley, more probably his wife Susanna, who became wife of Lieutenant William Phillips" By his will of February, 1682, Major Phillips gave his lands in Maine to his wife and two sons, Samuel and William, the latter of whom was then a captive among the Spaniards. Mrs. Phillips outlived her husband, and by her wukk if the Spetember 29, 1696, bequeathed to Peleg Sanford, Samuel Phillips, William Phillips and Eliphal Stretton, one-fourth part of her lands in the tract of eight miles square. The other three-fourths were reserved for the payments o the debts of her husband, deceased. If there were no debts, then that part was to be divided among her four children (presumably those before mentioned in her will) with the exception of one thousand acres given to her grandson, William, son of William and Eliphal (Sanford) Stretton. It would appear that, during the lifetime of Phillips and his immediate heirs, no steps were taken toward the laying out of the proposed township - it had an imaginary existence far away in the "forest primeval," but had not even been projected on paper. It was not until several years after the death of the principal and his sons, that any definite action was taken in regard to the matter. On the 15th of June, 1720, however, Samuel Tyley of Boston, and Theodore Atkinson were appointed attorney and assistant attorney, respectively, of the proprietors, the major part, at least, of the heirs of the Phillips, of nineteen thousand acres above Wells, with power "to survey and make a division of the land belonging thereto." That they might avail themselves of any advantage arising from such a division, and that their lands might be offered for sale under more favorable conditions, the following parties were interested in the survey and division: Source: http://www.sanfordhistory.org/local_history.htm John Buczek -----Original Message----- From: phillips-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:phillips-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of gc-gateway@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, January 14, 2008 1:06 PM To: PHILLIPS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [PHILLIPS] Major William Phillips This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
