He was living in Jackson co. as early as 1830, then it changed to Putnam county 1854, and he's on the census' for that county after that. I'm actually not related to him, but did some research on him trying to figure out who he was related to hoping to find a connection to my Phillips (I'm related to Charles Phillips who is listed near Jesse's family on the census' in Jackson/Putnam co.). If you're interested, email me and I'll send you what I have on him before he lived in TN. Amy. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. (Beulah Lucille is my grandmother). I spoke with my mother and she said he always lived with his parents around Porum, OK and to her knowledge never lived with his grandparents, (who also lived around Porum). His parents names were Walter C. and May Phillips. She couldn't remember May's maiden name. "Papa" Phillips wife's maiden name was Alsie Miller. Our records indicate that he was born in 1780 somewhere in NC and that he migrated to Tennessee in the area that is now Putnam County. Putnam County was formed from several counties including Jackson. We know that he had the following children: John Q., Eli, Luaney and Jane. We don't have any information about where he came from in North Carolina. I would be interested in seeing if we can find a connection. Also, are there any male relatives in your line that have done the DNA test? That would be the easiest way to prove a connection. Granted, this would be a little older than your Joel. But the name "Joel" and "Rainey" caught my eye and I thought I'd bring it to your attention: William's will, dated 1794 in Orange co., states his two sons were Joel and David. His wife was Elizabeth. A William "Rainey" signs as witness. I have seen the Rainey name on a couple of other docs. for the Phillips family and I think that it might be the family name of a Phillips wife, or that of a close family friend. Below are 3 wills: William Phillips (son, Joel; wit. William Rainey); Rainey Phillips; and William Rainey (Bakers in his will have possible ties to Phillips). 1. [PHILLIPS] Book--"Richard and Rhoda"
    2. The lineage: all Phillips Barnard 1759 -1818 Daniel 1781-1844 Edwin 1822-1909 Richard 1843- Home Location -- corner of Ontario, Steuben and Yates Counties, N.Y. Towns of Italy and Naples and Prattsburg. "Richard and Rhoda" is a series of Civil War letters in book form Richard wrote to Rhoda and other family members. And them to him. It is unique, historical and good. More than 100 pages -- mostly letters. I was looking for someone who might descend from this family. The three websites on rootsweb took and depended on Ripley for sources and they seem to carry the expected Ripley accuracy. At one time I thought I might be connected to this family, but it was not to be the case. Allen **************Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music. 2. Roger Phillips
    3. Bob, "Stumped" is a very operative word when doing genealogy research. I have accumulated a great deal of documentation some of which I specifically verified on a trip to Rhode Island last summer. Through this paper documentation I determined relationship back to the same Michael Phillips, Rhode Island. I also reviewed the groupings in the Phillips Worldwide DNA Project, including Group 11, and decided I was part of that group. I have been in touch through email with others associated with that Group, sharing our paper trails. I recently received the results of my 25 marker DNA test and "POW" what a shock. Not only am I not a part of Group 11, but I have no DNA matches in the Phillips DNA Project. My Haplogroup is I1a, which leads back to some Scandinavian ancestery. According to the Phillips DNA Project Assistant Administrator, my ancestors may have come from England and descended from the Vikings when they raided the area during the Dark Ages. Boy, that's pretty bizarre. My understanding is that Michael Phillips emigrated from Sussex England. Anyway, now there are some descrepancies on who descended from Michael Phillips. At this point I can't positively claim that I can prove my relationship to Michael Phillips any more than anybody else. I'm attempting to locate a distant cousin through my known line to do the DNA test to see how that matches with mine. So the search continues. 3. Jack, If you know that George is III - who are his parents and grandparents. I have quite a bit of information on the Rev. George Phillips b. 1592 d. 1644 line - who came to America with Gov. John Winthrop on the ship Arbella in 1630 and wondered if this George III was part of that line... do you know? or is that one of the things you are trying to determine? My particular line goes through Rev. George's son Zorubabel so obviously I have more information on that portion of the line. Just interested in how or if, George III connects. According to the earliest documentation I have, his discharge papers from the Glengarry Light Infantry Fencibles in 1815, he was reportedly born "in or near Cloverick, in or near Albany, New York." The only other reference is a published obituary which includes a sketch of his experiences fighting the American invasion of Canada; and states that he was born in Dutchess County, New York, and moved to Canada with his family in 1809. Right now there are just over 200 members who have had their Y-DNA tested and joined the group. We need more. I think we need a lot more. And we need to be able to see how they connect a lot clearer than we do now. I suspect that most of us have tried to do a straight line descent trace, and not made notes on all the branches. But, it's all those other branches that will help others to make a connection. Also, just because one person in the group connects to a given early colonist in the New World does not mean all other persons in the group will connect at the same point. It is possible that Michael Phillips of Rhode Island had a brother or a cousin who moved to the colonies at another time. I have ordered the full 37 marker test. So far they have posted the 25 marker results, and I am waiting for the full 37 marker results, hopefully by the end of the month. Still, that will only get me to a 90+% probability of direct relationship within a given number of generations, perhaps 300 to 400 years. It's interesting, but it doesn't nail anything down. In the meantime, I encourage everyone to continue to recruit more Phillips to submit samples, and continue to dig out all the possible roots and branches; especially those Phillips' out there who we know are not related to us. Just my thoughts. Bob Phillips Columbus, Ohio
