Author: NancyKiser Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.phillips/8131.1.2.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Sure, I am happy to explain. Fuzzy searches involve using what is called a "wildcard", among other techniques. On ancestry.com, the wildcard is an asterisk (*). It is a symbol that replaces letters. For example, the name Phillips is frequently spelled different ways by different people: Philips, Phillipps, Philipps, etc. So I always search for Phi*. This will pull up a lot of different spellings of Phillips. However, when you use this technique, it is a good idea to include other info to help weed out some of the hits, such as place or date of birth. It also helps if you limit your search to a specific county when you use the wild card technique. Of course, sometimes Phillips is spelled even more weirdly, like Fillips. So after trying Phi*, if I don't find who I am looking for, I may try searching only on his first name, especially if he had an unusual first name. You can once again use the wildcard to do this, but you have to use at least the first three letters of the person's name. When you search on a person's first name only, it is even more important to help limit your hits by adding the date and/or place of birth or just searching in a specific county. If you can't find the head of household, the next step is to try to find the name of the wife or one of the children, if you already know their names. Of course, this only works on the 1850 and later censuses, because before 1850 only the head of household was named. Also try putting in just the first initial of the person's first name, since sometimes the census taker did not spell out everyone's first name. However, sometimes the person who indexed the census simply missed a name or even a whole page. So sometimes you just have to go page by page to find who you are lookimg for. If you were able to find the person on the previous census, you might go back and look at who was living near him 10 years before, and then search for those names. People were much less mobile 200 or even 100 years ago than they are now. They tended to stay in the same places for a long time. Hope this helps. By the way, if you read the "Tips of Searching Ancestry.com", they tell you that ancestry automatically returns alternate spellings for any given name. However, I like using the wildcard method. I will email them to you. I always use "fuzzy" searches on census records, because they are frequently transcribed incorrectly due to the bad handwriting and the bad spelling. I agree with you that Reiney was probably a nickname for Irene and Azelee was probably really Aza Lee. This is one of the reasons I am interested in your Phillips line. The unusual first name Asa was used in my Phillips family and my Phillips were also Southerners. Nancy PS - My Phillips family is shown as Family Group 8 in the Phillips Worldwide DNA Project. Did you find those census records on ancestry.com? I searched the 1900 and the 1880 and couldn't find the listings you mentioned. They do look right due to the kids, and I'm thinking "Reiney" may have been Irene. I also don't find Azalee, and I tried Asa Lee as well. Could you point me towards your source? This is my periodic update on the status of the project. The Phillips Worldwide DNA Project currently has 262 members. We have now identified 32 separate, distinct Phillips families that are not related to each other within a genealogical time frame, which means they are not related to each other within 600 to 1000 years. In addition, we have over 70 participants who do not match anyone else in the project. As of this date (Tuesday, April 15, 2008), nineteen kits are being processed at the lab. Seven of those kits are for new participants, and the rest are upgrades and refinements of the DNA of existing members. Some of the new results are due back from the lab by the first of May. Here are links to our websites at World Families and Family Tree DNA where you can review the DNA and pedigrees of our participants: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/p/phillips/index.html http://www.familytreedna.com/public/PhillipsWorldwide/ Sincerely, Nancy Kiser Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Unfortunately, although I was close with my grandpa who died when I was young, we really don't communicate with mom's brothers. But this is great, it really gives me some more direction and hopefully I'll find some more generations with this. That 1910 Census was the biggest thing I've found so far. Again, thank you so much. They were married by W.A. Crawford, a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church. I found them on the 1910 Wilson Co KS census as follows: William B Phillips, 55, married twice, m 20 yrs to current wife, b KS, father b KS, mother b KS Susie E Phillips, 45, wife, married twice, m 20 yrs to current husband, 7 children, 5 living, b MO, father b MO, mother b MO Roscoe Phillips, 21, son, b MO, father b KS, mother b MO Irene Phillips, 14, daughter, b MO, father b KS, mother b MO Emma Phillips, 12, daughter, b MO, father b KS, mother b MO Jim W Phillips, 8, son, b KS, father b KS, mother b MO Oliver Phillips, 2, son, b MO, father b KS, mother b MO I also found them on the 1900 Jackson Co MO census as follows: W.B. Phillips, 38, b May 1862, b KS, father b MO, mother MO Ella Phillips, 36, wife, b Jan 1863, b MO, father b MO, mother b MO Ross Phillips, 9, son, b Sept 1890, b MO, father b KS, mother MO Reiney Phillips, 5, daughter, b Dec 1896, b MO, father b KS, mother b MO Emma Phillips, 2, daughter, b Aug 1898, b MO, father b KS, mother b MO Azelee Phillips, 19, son, b Oct 1880, b MO, father b KS, mother b MO Because Azelee was listed last and was born in 1880, he must have been William's son from his first marriage. Unfortunately, there is no census for 1890 because it was destroyed by a fire in Washington. However, I think I MIGHT have found your William Phillips on the 1880 census in Webster County MO with his first wife as follows: W.A. Philips, 22, b KS, father b TN, mother b TN Sarah E Philips, 16, b AL, father b AL, mother b AL Lee Phillips (male), 7 month, b Oct 1879, b MO, father b KS, mother b AL As you can see, your William's age jumps around wildly from census to census, as does his parents' place of birth. However, this is typical for the censuses. Because the name Lee or Azelee is fairly unusual, however, I do think it is possible that W.A. Phillips on the 1880 census is actually your W.B. Phillips. I know this isn't a lot of help, but at least it gives you a place to look for more info. If you have a male Phillips relative who would be willing to join the Phillips Worldwide DNA Project and get his DNA tested, you might be able to learn more. He is Sgt. Virgil L. Phillips, U.S. Army, of Columbus, Ind. He will be buried on April 19 in Loogootee, Ind. Representatives from the Army met with Phillips' next-of-kin to explain the recovery and identification process, and to coordinate interment with military honors on behalf of the secretary of the Army. In November 1950, Phillips was assigned to Company K, 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division then operating in Unsan, North Korea, near a bend in the Kuryong River known as the Camel's Head. On Nov. 1, parts of two Chinese Communist divisions struck the 1st Cavalry Division's lines, collapsing the perimeter and forcing a withdrawal. In the process, the 3rd Battalion was surrounded and effectively ceased to exist as a fighting unit. Phillips was one of the more than 350 servicemen unaccounted-for from the battle at Unsan. In 2003, a joint U.S.-Democratic People's Republic of Korea team (D.P.R.K.), led by the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), excavated a burial site near the Camel's Head. The team recovered human remains and other material evidence. Information from the D.P.R.K. indicated that the remains were initially buried near the battle site, but were later moved to a location nearby because of construction in the area. Among other forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from JPAC and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory also used mitochondrial DNA and dental comparisons in the identification of Phillips' remains.
