    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jojubi Surnames: Phillips, Hopkins, Edwards Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.phillips/3116.3810.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am very interested in the Phillips families from New Berlin and/or Chenango and Otsego counties in New York. I have Michael-Charles-Welcome as 3 generations ending with Welcome born about 1816. He then moved his wife and family to Wisconsin about 1849. I have not been able to find any other info on Welcome's father, Charles, or his grandfather, Michael. Do you have either of these two men in your line? Charles was married to Mary Hopkins and Michael married twice perhaps, first to Alice Edwards and then to a Joanna. Here is a link to our website: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/p/phillips/index.html.I don't believe Liz mentioned anyone named Merrel Phillips connected to her Phillips family, but there is an ancestor named Merrel Phillips in Family Group 10 at Phillips Worldwide DNA Project. This is Wayne Phillips' family group. This Phillips family group appears to tie back to Chatham Co NC where Merrel Phillips was born about 1805. Can you give us any more details on your Marrell Phillips? Do you have any male Phillips relatives who might be willing to join the project and get tested? Sincerely, Nancy Kiser Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. Bob Phillips
    3. Roger, I've finally been retired for a month and have had some time on my hands to rummage around the ol' genealogy dunps, ruminate, and reflect. You say that you were able to trace and verify your lineage back to Michael and Barbara and then ... wham! the DNA test came back putting you somewhere else in another universe. There are too few of us, actually, in group 11 to define anything for sure. Only one has claimed descent from Michael and Barbara, and her claim is based entirely on secondary sources. We are at the mercy of all of the years of accumulated amateur genealogy and their waste baskets. Ok, your DNA puts you outside of group 11. Perhaps somewhere in that lineage you collected and verified, you or your ancestor rather, was adopted. However, since you went to all the trouble of tracing that lineage, we can still make you an honorary member of Phillips group 11, perhaps. The more I dig, the muckier it gets. Hopefully you have found some cousins who have submitted samples for the DNA project. This could get interesting, yet. Bob Phillips Columbus, Ohio

    3. Allen, Thanks for the info. I "googled" the subject this morning and found a book was published on the subject titled "The Family and Vicissitudes of John Phillips Senior of Duxbury and Marshfield, A Vexatious Snarl in the Genealogy of an Old Colony Progenitor" in 1903 by Azel Ames. Seems that I am not the only one who is befuddled. I came into this stuff by way of being in Group 11 of the Phillips Woldwide DNA project, where the earliest ancestor of any group member is indicated to be Michael Phillips of Providence, Rhode Island. I have not been able to link my lineage to him thus far, and thought I would check to see if he had any brothers who came across from England as well. My g-g-grandfather, Jonathan Phillips (1794-1868) according to his discharge papers from the Glengary Light Infantry Fencibles (1815) was born in or near Claverack, NY; yet according to his obituary was born in Dutchess County, NY. I am now in doubt that either of these reports are accurate. Thus far I have found no mention of his parents names. I did note that there are a lot of submissions both in the I.G.I. and the Rootsweb site for both families. Maybe some of them are still actively searching and will yet pitch in with their views. Much thanks, Bob Phillips Columbus, Ohio NEMOXT3R5@aol.com wrote: >Hello Bob, > >This will likely add to the confusion. They are undocumented data saved some >years ago. 3. Fellow Phillips researchers, I am wondering if anyone on our list has documentation on John Phillips 1602-1682 and his wife Mary Street; also their children. At present all I have had to work with are internet access to the I.G.I. and the Rootsweb World Connect database. What I have found is very confused, conflicting, and diverse. Could you help sort this data out, please? Thank you, Bob Phillips Columbus, Ohio

    3. Hi, Wanda, Yes, there is a DNA test for women, but it is not very effective for genealogical research. Women have something called mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) that can be tested. However, mtDNA cannot be tied to any specific surname, because women traditionally change their last names every generation when they get married. Also, mtDNA mutates or changes very, very slowly, much slower than male DNA (yDNA). In fact, mtDNA mutates so slowly that your mtDNA is probably exactly the same as your direct maternal ancestor who lived thousands of years ago. This means that mtDNA testing works better for anthropological research than for genealogical research.
